Effect of Cyclic Stresses below the Endurance Limit on the Fatigue Life of 40Cr Steel
The effect of cyclic stresses below the endurance limit on the fatigue life of 40Cr medium-strength carbon steel is studied. Conventional constant-amplitude cyclic tests and specially designed variableamplitude ones are conducted under torsional loading at the stress ratio R = 0.1. The results show that the strengthening effect of cyclic stresses below the endurance limit can be reached if they are applied prior to the exceeding ones. Moreover, the stress amplitude, number of cycles and load sequence are found to be the three major strengthening effect-controlling factors.Изучено влияние циклических напряжений ниже предела выносливости на усталостную долговечность углеродистой стали средней прочности 40Cr. Выполнены стандартные циклические испытания с постоянной амплитудой и специально разработанное испытание с переменной амплитудой при крутящем усилии и коэффициенте асимметрии R = 0,1. Показано, что эффект упрочнения от циклических напряжений ниже предела выносливости достигается при их приложении до напряжений, превышающих этот предел. Установлено, что амплитуда напряжений, число циклов и схема нагружения являются тремя основными факторами, контролирующими эффект упрочнения
Stripes in Quantum Hall Double Layer Systems
We present results of a study of double layer quantum Hall systems in which
each layer has a high-index Landau level that is half-filled. Hartree-Fock
calculations indicate that, above a critical layer separation, the system
becomes unstable to the formation of a unidirectional coherent charge density
wave (UCCDW), which is related to stripe states in single layer systems. The
UCCDW state supports a quantized Hall effect when there is tunneling between
layers, and is {\it always} stable against formation of an isotropic Wigner
crystal for Landau indices . The state does become unstable to the
formation of modulations within the stripes at large enough layer separation.
The UCCDW state supports low-energy modes associated with interlayer coherence.
The coherence allows the formation of charged soliton excitations, which become
gapless in the limit of vanishing tunneling. We argue that this may result in a
novel {\it ``critical Hall state''}, characterized by a power law in

A Detailed Monte-Carlo Simulation for the Belle TOF System
We have developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation program for the Belle TOF
system. Based on GEANT simulation, it takes account of all physics processes in
the TOF scintillation counters and readout electronics. The simulation
reproduces very well the performance of the Belle TOF system, including the
dE/dx response, the time walk effect, the time resolution, and the hit
efficiency due to beam background. In this report, we will describe the Belle

Low--Energy Behavior of Two--Point Functions of Quark Currents
We discuss vector, axial-vector, scalar and pseudoscalar two-point functions
at low and intermediate energies. We first review what is known from chiral
perturbation theory, as well as from a heat kernel expansion within the context
of the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model of ref. \cite{12}. In this work
we derive then these two-point functions to all orders in the momenta and to
leading order in . We find an improved high-energy behaviour and a
general way of parametrizing them that shows relations between some of the
two-point functions, which are also valid in the presence of gluonic
interactions. The similarity between the shape of the experimentally known
spectral functions and the ones we derive, is greatly improved with respect to
those predicted by the usual constituent quark like models. We also obtain the
scalar mass independent of the regularization scheme. In the end,
we calculate fully an example of a nonleptonic matrix element in the
ENJL--model, the electromagnetic mass difference and find good

Nightly Variation in Sleep Influences Self-efficacy for Adhering to a Healthy Lifestyle: A Prospective Study
Background: Self-efficacy, or the perceived capability to engage in a behavior, has been shown to play an important role in adhering to weight loss treatment. Given that adherence is extremely important for successful weight loss outcomes and that sleep and self-efficacy are modifiable factors in this relationship, we examined the association between sleep and self-efficacy for adhering to the daily plan. Investigators examined whether various dimensions of sleep were associated with self-efficacy for adhering to the daily recommended lifestyle plan among participants (N = 150) in a 12-month weight loss study. Method: This study was a secondary analysis of data from a 12-month prospective observational study that included a standard behavioral weight loss intervention. Daily assessments at the beginning of day (BOD) of self-efficacy and the previous night’s sleep were collected in real-time using ecological momentary assessment. Results: The analysis included 44,613 BOD assessments. On average, participants reported sleeping for 6.93 ± 1.28 h, reported 1.56 ± 3.54 awakenings, and gave low ratings for trouble sleeping (3.11 ± 2.58; 0: no trouble; 10: a lot of trouble) and mid-high ratings for sleep quality (6.45 ± 2.09; 0: poor; 10: excellent). Participants woke up feeling tired 41.7% of the time. Using linear mixed effects modeling, a better rating in each sleep dimension was associated with higher self-efficacy the following day (all p values <.001). Conclusion: Our findings supported the hypothesis that better sleep would be associated with higher levels of reported self-efficacy for adhering to the healthy lifestyle plan
Quantum Ferromagnetism and Phase Transitions in Double-Layer Quantum Hall Systems
Double layer quantum Hall systems have interesting properties associated with
interlayer correlations. At where is an odd integer they exhibit
spontaneous symmetry breaking equivalent to that of spin easy-plane
ferromagnets, with the layer degree of freedom playing the role of spin. We
explore the rich variety of quantum and finite temperature phase transitions in
these systems. In particular, we show that a magnetic field oriented parallel
to the layers induces a highly collective commensurate-incommensurate phase

Interlayer Exchange Interactions, SU(4) Soft Waves and Skyrmions in Bilayer Quantum Hall Ferromagnets
The Coulomb exchange interaction is the driving force for quantum coherence
in quantum Hall systems. We construct a microscopic Landau-site Hamiltonian for
the exchange interaction in bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets, which is
characterized by the SU(4) isospin structure. By taking a continuous limit, the
Hamiltonian gives rise to the SU(4) nonlinear sigma model in the
von-Neumann-lattice formulation. The ground-state energy is evaluated at
filling factors . It is shown at that there are 3
independent soft waves, where only one soft wave is responsible for the
coherent tunneling of electrons between the two layers. It is also shown at
that there are 3 independent skyrmion states apart from the
translational degree of freedom. They are CP skyrmions enjoying the
spin-charge entanglement confined within the \LLL.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Grover search with pairs of trapped ions
The desired interference required for quantum computing may be modified by
the wave function oscillations for the implementation of quantum
algorithms[Phys.Rev.Lett.84(2000)1615]. To diminish such detrimental effect, we
propose a scheme with trapped ion-pairs being qubits and apply the scheme to
the Grover search. It can be found that our scheme can not only carry out a
full Grover search, but also meet the requirement for the scalable hot-ion
quantum computing. Moreover, the ion-pair qubits in our scheme are more robust
against the decoherence and the dissipation caused by the environment than
single-particle qubits proposed before.Comment: RevTe
Stoichiometry of Heteromeric BAFF and APRIL Cytokines Dictates Their Receptor Binding and Signaling Properties.
The closely related TNF family ligands B cell activation factor (BAFF) and a proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL) serve in the generation and maintenance of mature B-lymphocytes. Both BAFF and APRIL assemble as homotrimers that bind and activate several receptors that they partially share. However, heteromers of BAFF and APRIL that occur in patients with autoimmune diseases are incompletely characterized. The N and C termini of adjacent BAFF or APRIL monomers are spatially close and can be linked to create single-chain homo- or hetero-ligands of defined stoichiometry. Similar to APRIL, heteromers consisting of one BAFF and two APRILs (BAA) bind to the receptors B cell maturation antigen (BCMA), transmembrane activator and CAML interactor (TACI) but not to the BAFF receptor (BAFFR). Heteromers consisting of one APRIL and two BAFF (ABB) bind to TACI and BCMA and weakly to BAFFR in accordance with the analysis of the receptor interaction sites in the crystallographic structure of ABB. Receptor binding correlated with activity in reporter cell line assays specific for BAFFR, TACI, or BCMA. Single-chain BAFF (BBB) and to a lesser extent single-chain ABB, but not APRIL or single-chain BAA, rescued BAFFR-dependent B cell maturation in BAFF-deficient mice. In conclusion, BAFF-APRIL heteromers of different stoichiometries have distinct receptor-binding properties and activities. Based on the observation that heteromers are less active than BAFF, we speculate that their physiological role might be to down-regulate BAFF activity

broad peak due to the is observed, and its pole position is determined
to be - MeV from the mean of six analyses.
