    Topological Gauge Structure and Phase Diagram for Weakly Doped Antiferromagnets

    We show that the topological gauge structure in the phase string theory of the {\rm t-J} model gives rise to a global phase diagram of antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases in a weakly doped regime. Dual confinement and deconfinement of holons and spinons play essential roles here, with a quantum critical point at a doping concentration xc≃0.043x_c\simeq 0.043.     Cosmic-ray-mediated Formation of Benzene on the Surface of Saturn's Moon Titan

    The aromatic benzene molecule (C_6H_6)—a central building block of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules—is of crucial importance for the understanding of the organic chemistry of Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Here, we show via laboratory experiments and electronic structure calculations that the benzene molecule can be formed on Titan's surface in situ via non-equilibrium chemistry by cosmic-ray processing of low-temperature acetylene (C_2H_2) ices. The actual yield of benzene depends strongly on the surface coverage. We suggest that the cosmic-ray-mediated chemistry on Titan's surface could be the dominant source of benzene, i.e., a factor of at least two orders of magnitude higher compared to previously modeled precipitation rates, in those regions of the surface which have a high surface coverage of acetylene

    Numerical and physical simulation of rapid microstructural evolution of gas atomised Ni superalloy powders

    The rapid microstructural evolution of gas atomised Ni superalloy powder compacts over timescales of a few seconds was studied using a Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator, finite element based numerical model and electron microscopy. The study found that the microstructural changes were governed by the characteristic temperatures of the alloy. At a temperature below the γ' solvus, the powders maintained dendritic structures. Above the γ' solvus temperature but in the solid-state, rapid grain spheroidisation and coarsening occurred, although the fine-scale microstructures were largely retained. Once the incipient melting temperature of the alloy was exceeded, microstructural change was rapid, and when the temperature was increased into the solid + liquid state, the powder compact partially melted and then re-solidified with no trace of the original structures, despite the fast timescales. The study reveals the relationship between short, severe thermal excursions and microstructural evolution in powder processed components, and gives guidance on the upper limit of temperature and time for powder-based processes if desirable fine-scale features of powders are to be preserved

    Inhibitory effects of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate on melanogenesis in ultraviolet A-induced B16 murine melanoma cell

    Purpose: To investigate the anti-melanogenesis effect of green tea compound, (-)-epigallocatechin-3- gallate (EGCG), on B16 murine melanoma cell irradiated by ultraviolet A (UVA) in the search for natural skin-lightening alternative agents.Methods: B16 murine melanoma cells by UVA (9.0 J/cm2) for 0 to 32 min and then incubated in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) with EGCG (0-200 μg/mL) for 2 days. Cell viability was determined by MTT method and cell protein was quantified using a PA102 Bradford protein assay kit. Activity of tyrosinase (TRY) was determined based on the oxidation rate of 3,4-dihydroxy phenylalanine (DOPA). The ultra-structure of the melanosomes was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).Results: TRY activity and melanin concentration were increased to 146.70 ± 10.28 % (p < 0.05) and 157.06 ± 6.37 % (p < 0.05), respectively, by 9.0 J/cm2 UVA irradiation for 8 min, compared to blank control without UV A and EGCG. EGCG inhibited the UV A induced increase in TRY activity and melanin level, and the optimum concentration of EGCG was 25 μg/mL. TRY activity and melanin concentration were decreased to 64.71 ± 4.41 (p < 0.05) and 86.24 ± 5.15 % (p < 0.05), respectively, compared to blank (control) which was neither treated by UVA nor by EGCG. TEM showed that UVA induced the formation of melanosomes while EGCG inhibited UVA-induced melanosome maturation.Conclusion: EGCG inhibits UVA-induced melanogenesis via suppression of TRY activity and melanosome maturation and is thus a potential alternative to melanogenesis inhibitor.Keywords: Green tea, Catechins, Melanin, Melanosome, Tyrosinase, Cell proliferatio

    Generation of 3-Dimensional graph state with Josephson charge qubits

    On the basis of generations of 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional graph states, we generate a 3-dimensional N3-qubit graph state based on the Josephson charge qubits. Since any two charge qubits can be selectively and effectively coupled by a common inductance, the controlled phase transform between any two-qubit can be performed. Accordingly, we can generate arbitrary multi-qubit graph states corresponding to arbitrary shape graph, which meet the expectations of various quantum information processing schemes. All the devices in the scheme are well within the current technology. It is a simple, scalable and feasible scheme for the generation of various graph states based on the Josephson charge qubits.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Non-Abelian Collective Excitations in Unlinearized Quark-Gluon Plasma Media

    We study the effect of unlinearized medium on the collective excitations in quark-gluon plasma. We present two kinds of non-Abelian oscillation solutions which respectively correspond to weakly and strongly nonlinear coupling of field components in color space. We also show that the weakly nonlinear solution is similar to Abelian-like one but has the frequency shift, which is of order g2Tg^2T, from eigenfrequency.Comment: 7 page

    The Dependence of the Occupation of Galaxies on the Halo Formation Time

    We study the dependence of the galaxy contents within halos on the halo formation time using two galaxy formation models, one being a semianalytic model utilizing the halo assembly history from a high resolution N-body simulation and the other being a smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation including radiative cooling, star formation, and energy feedback from galactic winds. We confirm the finding by Gao et al. that at fixed mass, the clustering of halos depends on the halo formation time, especially for low-mass halos. This age dependence of halo clustering makes it desirable to study the correlation between the occupation of galaxies within halos and the halo age. We find that, in halos of fixed mass, the number of satellite galaxies has a strong dependence on halo age, with fewer satellites in older halos. The youngest one-third of the halos can have an order of magnitude more satellites than the oldest one-third. For central galaxies, in halos that form earlier, they tend to have more stars and thus appear to be more luminous, and the dependence of their luminosity on halo age is not as strong as that of stellar mass. The results can be understood through the star formation history in halos and the merging of satellites onto central galaxies. The age dependence of the galaxy contents within halos would constitute an important ingredient in a more accurate halo-based model of galaxy clustering.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Accepted by ApJ Letters, emulateapj layout.     A model-based method with joint sparsity constant for direct diffusion tensor estimation

    Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been widely used for nondestructive characterization of microstructures of myocardium or brain connectivity. It requires repeated acquisition with different diffusion gradients. The long acquisition time greatly limits the clinical application of DTI. In this paper, a novel method, named model-based method with joint sparsity constraint (MB-JSC), effectively incorporates the prior information on the joint sparsity of different diffusion-weighted images in direct estimation of the diffusion tensor from highly undersampled k-space data.     Protective Effect of (-)-Epigallocatechin Gallate against Photo-Damage Induced by Ultraviolet A in Human Skin Fibroblasts

    Purpose: To investigate the photoprotective effect of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), one of tea catechins, on human skin fibroblast (HSF) irradiated by ultraviolet A.Methods: HSF cells were incubated in serum-free Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) with or without EGCG for 2 h, and then irradiated by UV A. Blank (control) was incubated in DMEM without EGCG and UV A-irradiation. Cell viability was determined by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. Protein concentration of the samples was determined using a PA102 Bradford protein assay kit. Malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide anion radicals were determined using MDA assay kit, GSH-Px assay kit and superoxide anion radical assay kit, respectively.Results: HSF viability decreased with dosage of UV A irradiation with 50 % lethal dose (LD50)of 9 J/cm2. Pre-incubation of HSF in 10 μg/mL EGCG aqueous solution for 2 h before exposure to UV A alleviated the suppressive effect of UV A on HSF. Compared to UVA irradiation alone, HSF viability and GSH-Px activity in the EGCG pretreatment increased by 18.3 and 103.4 %, accompanying decrease in level of superoxide anion radicals and MDA by 44.6 and 16.6 %, respectively.Conclusion: EGCG alleviates UV A-induced HSF photo-damage through relieving oxidative stress by increasing activity of GSH-Px and scavenging capacity of superoxide anion radical.Keywords: Irradiation, Catechins, Photoaging, Photoprotection, Malondialdehyde, Glutathione peroxidase, Superoxide anion radica
