    Disordered structure for long-range charge density wave order in annealed crystals of magnetic kagome FeGe

    Recently, charge density wave (CDW) has been observed well below the order of antiferromagnetism (AFM) in kagome FeGe in which magnetism and CDW are intertwined to form an emergent quantum ground state. The mechanism of CDW precipitating from an A-type AFM of Fe kagome sublattice is intensively debated. The structural distortion originating from the CDW has yet to be accurately determined in FeGe. Here we resolved the structure model of the CDW in annealed FeGe crystals through single crystal x-ray diffraction via a synchrotron radiation source. The annealed crystals exhibit strong CDW transition signals exemplified by sharp magnetic susceptibility drop and specific heat jump, as well as intense superlattice reflections from 2 ×\times 2 ×\times 2 CDW order. Occupational disorder of Ge atoms resulting from short-range CDW correlations above TCDWT_\mathrm{CDW} has also been identified from the structure refinements. The dimerization of Ge atoms along c axis has been demonstrated to be the dominant distortion for CDW. The Fe kagome and Ge honeycomb sublattices only undergo subtle distortions. Occupational disorder of Ge atoms is also proved to exist in the CDW phase due to the random selection of partial Ge sites to be dimerized to realize the structural distortion. Our work paves the way to understanding the unconventional nature of CDW in FeGe not only by solving the structural distortion below TCDWT_\mathrm{CDW} and identifying fluctuations above it but also by rationalizing the synthesis of high-quality crystals for in-depth investigations in the future.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures.     Prognosis of immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced myasthenia gravis: a single center experience and systematic review

    BackgroundImmune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI)-induced myasthenia gravis (MG) is an uncommon but potentially fatal neurotoxicity. We aim to help physicians familiarize themselves with the clinical characteristics of ICI-induced MG, facilitating early diagnosis and prompt intervention.MethodsWe searched the Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital medical record system from January 2017 to August 2023 for patients diagnosed with ICI-induced MG. We systematically reviewed the literature until August 2023 to identify all similar patients. We collected clinical information on these patients.Results110 patients were identified, 9 from our institution and 101 from case reports. In our institution, Median age was 66 years (range: 49–79 years). 6 were males. The most common was lung cancer (n = 4). All patients had no previous history of MG and received PD-1 or PD-L1 inhibitors. The median time from ICI initiation to first MG symptoms was 4 weeks (range: 2–15 weeks). ICIs were discontinued in all patients. Most patients initially received high-dose corticosteroids, and their symptoms improved. Some patients are discharged with corticosteroids maintenance therapy. In addition, 55 patients (50%) with concomitant myositis and/or myocarditis and MG-induced mortality were more common in the myositis and/or myocarditis group (10.9% vs. 34.5%, p = 0.016). Overlap of myositis with MG (OR = 3.148, p = 0.009) and anti-AChR antibody positivity (OR = 3.364, p = 0.005) were both significantly associated with poor outcomes.ConclusionOur study reveals the prognosis of ICI-induced MG and suggests that myositis and/or myocarditis are severe comorbidities of ICI-induced MG, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and clinical intervention

    Hierarchical domain adaptation with local feature patterns

    Domain adaptation is proposed to generalize learning machines and address performance degradation of models that are trained from one specific source domain but applied to novel target domains. Existing domain adaptation methods focus on transferring holistic features whose discriminability is generally tailored to be source-specific and inferiorly generic to be transferable. As a result, standard domain adaptation on holistic features usually damages feature structures, especially local feature statistics, and deteriorates the learned discriminability. To alleviate this issue, we propose to transfer primitive local feature patterns, whose discriminability are shown to be inherently more sharable, and perform hierarchical feature adaptation. Concretely, we first learn a cluster of domain-shared local feature patterns and partition the feature space into cells. Local features are adaptively aggregated inside each cell to obtain cell features, which are further integrated into holistic features. To achieve fine-grained adaptations, we simultaneously perform alignment on local features, cell features and holistic features, within which process the local and cell features are aligned independently inside each cell to maintain the learned local structures and prevent negative transfer.     Exploiting Local Feature Patterns for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation

    Unsupervised domain adaptation methods aim to alleviate performance degradation caused by domain-shift by learning domain-invariant representations. Existing deep domain adaptation methods focus on holistic feature alignment by matching source and target holistic feature distributions, without considering local features and their multi-mode statistics. We show that the learned local feature patterns are more generic and transferable and a further local feature distribution matching enables fine-grained feature alignment. In this paper, we present a method for learning domain-invariant local feature patterns and jointly aligning holistic and local feature statistics. Comparisons to the state-of-the-art unsupervised domain adaptation methods on two popular benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our approach and its effectiveness on alleviating negative transfer

    Sequential‐Crosslinking Fibrin Glue for Rapid and Reinforced Hemostasis

    Abstract Achieving hemostasis effectively is essential for surgical success and excellent patient outcomes. However, it is challenging to develop hemostatic adhesives that are fast‐acting, strongly adherent, long‐lasting, and biocompatible for treating hemorrhage. In this study, a sequential crosslinking fibrin glue (SCFG) is developed, of which the first network of the fibrin glue forms in situ within 2 s to act as an initial physical barrier and locks the gelatin methacryloyl precursor for tight construction of the second network to enhance wet adhesion and durability for tissues covered with blood. The sequential crosslinking glue can provide large pressures (≈280 mmHg of burst pressure), makes strong (38 kPa of shear strength) and tough (≈60 J m−2 of interfacial toughness) interfaces with wet tissues, and outperforms commercial hemostatic agents and gelatin methacryloyl. SCFG are demonstrated as an effective and safe sealant to enhance the treatment outcomes of bleeding tissues in rat, rabbit, and pig models. The ultrafast gelation, strong adhesion and durability, excellent compatibility, and easy manufacture of SCFG make it a promising hemostatic adhesive for clinical applications

    C-176 loaded Ce DNase nanoparticles synergistically inhibit the cGAS-STING pathway for ischemic stroke treatment

    The neuroinflammatory responses following ischemic stroke cause irreversible nerve cell death. Cell free-double strand DNA (dsDNA) segments from ischemic tissue debris are engulfed by microglia and sensed by their cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS), which triggers robust activation of the innate immune stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway and initiate the chronic inflammatory cascade. The decomposition of immunogenic dsDNA and inhibition of the innate immune STING are synergistic immunologic targets for ameliorating neuroinflammation. To combine the anti-inflammatory strategies of STING inhibition and dsDNA elimination, we constructed a DNase-mimetic artificial enzyme loaded with C-176. Nanoparticles are self-assembled by amphiphilic copolymers (P[CL35-b-(OEGMA20.7-co-NTAMA14.3)]), C-176, and Ce4+ which is coordinated with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) group to form corresponding catalytic structures. Our work developed a new nano-drug that balances the cGAS-STING axis to enhance the therapeutic impact of stroke by combining the DNase-memetic Ce4+ enzyme and STING inhibitor synergistically. In conclusion, it is a novel approach to modulating central nervus system (CNS) inflammatory signaling pathways and improving stroke prognosis
