    Consideration of IEEE 802.11p and proposed 5G for holograms in vehicular communication

Vehicular communication is the technology that allows vehicles to exchange information with other cars and its surroundings to enhance safety and efficiency of transportation systems. Informative communication, which includes vehicle's position, velocity, and location, enables the sensing of hazards and traffic congestion. In this paper, two vehicular communication standards, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11p and the proposed next-generation cellular network 5G are compared for vehicular networking. A detailed comparative study of the standards concerning latency, coverage, scalability, and mobility. The results indicate that IEEE 802.11p offers acceptable performance with limited mobility support. Whereas, 5G meets most of the vehicular application requirements regarding latency, coverage, scalability, and mobility. 3D holographic communication in 5G would allow users to experience live and interactive meetings. The bandwidth requirement of 3D holograms is predicted to be in terabyte level. With compression techniques, the delivery of real-time holograms has been researched to require 10Gbps or higher

    Persistent Q anti-collision algorithm for RFID

In passive Radio Frequency Identification Systems (RFIDs), the interrogator should energise clients within range and use their backscattered replies to identify an inventory as quickly as possible. However, at the interrogator replies from two or more energised clients may collide and collided clients may not be identified. Therefore, collisions increase the number of timeslots needed to record an inventory. Reducing the number and frequency of collisions is an important and topical area research in RFID. Previously for passive Ultra High Frequency RFID the problem of collisions has been addressed using an ALOHA based protocol called the Q-Selection Algorithm. In this paper, a more efficient algorithm is presented that is shown to reduce the number of timeslots needed to record an inventory by approximately 30% when compared to the existing Q algorithm

    Social Protection and Child Protection: Two Sides of the Same Coin?

    There is widespread recognition that children are a particularly vulnerable group; they have different basic needs than adults do, they are dependent on others for the fulfilment of their needs and the denial of those needs can have far-reaching and long-term adverse consequences (Roelen and Sabates-Wheeler 2012, White, Leavy, and Masters 2003, Sabates-Wheeler, Devereux, and Hodges 2009). The policy areas of social protection and child protection are part and parcel of the response to children and their vulnerabilities. Nevertheless, both policy areas have largely developed in silos (Roelen, Long, and Edstrom 2012). This holds in both academic and policy terms. Whilst issues of child protection are mostly dealt with in disciplines of child psychology and childhood studies, social protection is largely appropriated by economists and social scientists. Similarly, national governments, international organisations and NGOs often deal with issues of child protection and social protection in different departments and through distinct sectoral policies. It is increasingly recognised that this dichotomy is artificial (Shibuya and Taylor 2013), and that it compromises the effectiveness of the response to the wide set of needs of vulnerable children

    Antifungal compound honokiol triggers oxidative stress responsive signalling pathway and modulates central carbon metabolism

    <p>The fast growing evidences have shown that the plant-derived compound honokiol is a promising candidate for treating multiple human diseases, such as inflammation and cancer. However, the mode-of-action (MoA) of honokiol remains largely unclear. Here, we studied the antifungal activity of honokiol in fission yeast model, with the goal of understanding the honokiol’s mechanism of action from the molecular level. We found that honokiol can inhibit the yeast growth at a dose-dependent way. Microarray analysis showed that honokiol has wide impacts on the fission yeast transcription levels (in total, 512 genes are up-regulated, and 42 genes are down-regulated). Gene set enrichment analysis indicated that over 45% up-regulated genes belong to the core environmental stress responses category. Moreover, network analysis suggested that there are extensive gene–gene interactions amongst the co-expression gene lists, which can assemble several biofunctionally important modules. It is noteworthy that several key components of central carbon metabolism, such as glucose transporters and metabolic enzymes of glycolysis, are involved in honokiol’s MoA. The complexity of the honokiol’s MoA displayed in previous studies and this work demonstrates that multiple omics approaches and bioinformatics tools should be applied together to achieve the complete scenario of honokiol’s antifungal function.</p

    A source-controlled data center network model

    <div><p>The construction of data center network by applying SDN technology has become a hot research topic. The SDN architecture has innovatively separated the control plane from the data plane which makes the network more software-oriented and agile. Moreover, it provides virtual multi-tenancy, effective scheduling resources and centralized control strategies to meet the demand for cloud computing data center. However, the explosion of network information is facing severe challenges for SDN controller. The flow storage and lookup mechanisms based on TCAM device have led to the restriction of scalability, high cost and energy consumption. In view of this, a source-controlled data center network (SCDCN) model is proposed herein. The SCDCN model applies a new type of source routing address named the vector address (VA) as the packet-switching label. The VA completely defines the communication path and the data forwarding process can be finished solely relying on VA. There are four advantages in the SCDCN architecture. 1) The model adopts hierarchical multi-controllers and abstracts large-scale data center network into some small network domains that has solved the restriction for the processing ability of single controller and reduced the computational complexity. 2) Vector switches (VS) developed in the core network no longer apply TCAM for table storage and lookup that has significantly cut down the cost and complexity for switches. Meanwhile, the problem of scalability can be solved effectively. 3) The SCDCN model simplifies the establishment process for new flows and there is no need to download flow tables to VS. The amount of control signaling consumed when establishing new flows can be significantly decreased. 4) We design the VS on the NetFPGA platform. The statistical results show that the hardware resource consumption in a VS is about 27% of that in an OFS.</p></div
