An octonion algebra originating in combinatorics
C.H. Yang discovered a polynomial version of the classical Lagrange identity
expressing the product of two sums of four squares as another sum of four
squares. He used it to give short proofs of some important theorems on
composition of delta-codes (now known as T-sequences). We investigate the
possible new versions of his polynomial Lagrange identity. Our main result
shows that all such identities are equivalent to each other.Comment: 11 pages, A simpler proof of the main theorem, due to Alberto

Genetic algorithm and neural network hybrid approach for job-shop scheduling
Copyright @ 1998 ACTA PressThis paper proposes a genetic algorithm (GA) and constraint satisfaction adaptive neural network (CSANN) hybrid approach for job-shop scheduling problems. In the hybrid approach, GA is used to iterate for searching optimal solutions, CSANN is used to obtain feasible solutions during the iteration of genetic algorithm. Simulations have shown the valid performance of the proposed hybrid approach for job-shop scheduling with respect to the quality of solutions and the speed of calculation. This research is supported by the National Nature Science Foundation and National High

Synthetic vision and emotion calculation in intelligent virtual human modeling
The virtual human technique already can provide vivid and believable human behaviour in more and more scenarios. Virtual humans are expected to replace real humans in hazardous situations to undertake tests and feed back valuable information. This paper will introduce a virtual human with a novel collision-based synthetic vision, short-term memory model and a capability to implement the emotion calculation and decision making. The virtual character based on this model can ‘see’ what is in his field of view (FOV) and remember those objects. After that, a group of affective computing equations have been introduced. These equations have been implemented into a proposed emotion calculation process to enlighten emotion for virtual intelligent huma

Emotion-affected decision making in human simulation
Human modelling is an interdisciplinary research field. The topic, emotion-affected decision making, was originally a cognitive psychology issue, but is now recognized as an important research direction for both computer science and biomedical modelling. The main aim of this paper is to attempt to bridge the gap between psychology and bioengineering in emotion-affected decision making. The work is based on Ortony's theory of emotions and bounded rationality theory, and attempts to connect the emotion process with decision making. A computational emotion model is proposed, and the initial framework of this model in virtual human simulation within the platform of VirtoolsTm is presented
Human motion modeling and simulation by anatomical approach
To instantly generate desired infinite realistic human motion is still a great challenge in virtual human simulation. In this paper, the novel emotion effected motion classification and anatomical motion classification are presented, as well as motion capture and parameterization methods. The framework for a novel anatomical approach to model human motion in a HTR (Hierarchical Translations and Rotations) file format is also described. This novel anatomical approach in human motion modelling has the potential to generate desired infinite human motion from a compact motion database. An architecture for the real-time generation of new motions is also propose
Time-resolved X-ray microscopy of nanoparticle aggregates under oscillatory shear
Of all current detection techniques with nanometer resolution, only X-ray
microscopy allows imaging nanoparticles in suspension. Can it also be used to
investigate structural dynamics? When studying response to mechanical stimuli,
the challenge lies in applying them with precision comparable to spatial
resolution. In the first shear experiments performed in an X-ray microscope, we
accomplished this by inserting a piezo actuator driven shear cell into the
focal plane of a scanning transmission X-ray microscope (STXM). Thus
shear-induced reorganization of magnetite nanoparticle aggregates could be
demonstrated in suspension. As X-ray microscopy proves suitable for studying
structural change, new prospects open up in physics at small length scales.Comment: submitted to J. Synchrot. Radia

A study of nucleate boiling and critical heat flux with EHD enhancement
The paper describes results from an experimental and theoretical study of the effect of an electric field on nucleate boiling and the critical heat flux (CHF) in pool boiling of R123 at atmospheric pressure on a horizontal wall with a smooth surface. Two designs of electrode (parallel rods and wire mesh) were used.
The experimental data exhibit some differences from the data obtained by other researchers in similar experiments on a wall with a different surface finish and with a slightly different design of wire mesh electrode. The hydrodynamic model for EHD enhancement of CHF cannot reconcile the differences.
A theoretical model has been developed for the growth of a single vapour bubble on a superheated wall in an electric field, leading to a numerical simulation based on the level-set method. The model includes matching of sub-models for the micro- and macro- regions, conduction in the wall, distortion of the electric field by the bubble, the temperature dependence of electrical properties and free-charge generation. In the present form of the model, some of these effects are realised in an approximate form. The capability to investigate dry-spot formation and wall temperature changes that might lead to CHF has been demonstrated

Modelling human behaviours and reactions under dangerous environment
This paper describes the framework of a real-time simulation system to model human behavior and reactions in dangerous environments. The system utilizes the latest 3D computer animation techniques, combined with artificial intelligence, robotics and psychology, to model human behavior, reactions and decision making under expected/unexpected dangers in real-time in virtual environments. The development of the system includes: classification on the conscious/subconscious behaviors and reactions of different people; capturing different motion postures by the Eagle Digital System; establishing 3D character animation models; establishing 3D models for the scene; planning the scenario and the contents; and programming within Virtools (TM) Dev. Programming within Virtools (TM) Dev is subdivided into modeling dangerous events, modeling character's perceptions, modeling character's decision making, modeling character's movements, modeling character's interaction with environment and setting up the virtual cameras. The real-time simulation of human reactions in hazardous environments is invaluable in military defense, fire escape, rescue operation planning, traffic safety studies, and safety planning in chemical factories, the design of buildings, airplanes, ships and trains. Currently, human motion modeling can be realized through established technology, whereas to integrate perception and intelligence into virtual human's motion is still a huge undertaking. The challenges here are the synchronization of motion and intelligence, the accurate modeling of human's vision, smell, touch and hearing, the diversity and effects of emotion and personality in decision making. There are three types of software platforms which could be employed to realize the motion and intelligence within one system, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed

Modelling of the growth and detachment of a vapour bubble and the effect of a electric field in the nucleate boiling regime
A comprehensive model predicting the deformation, growth and detachment of a vapour bubble in the nucleate boiling regime with an applied electric field is described in this paper. The model takes into account the full electrohydrodynamics of the phenomenon including the influence of local temperature on the generation of free charges in the liquid. Solution of the model by the level set method has been successfully implemented with a commercial CFD code. Aspects of the code and the graphical software requiring further development are noted.
Sample results are presented to demonstrate the effect of the electric field on the growth and detachment of the bubble, for a bubble initially protruding through a thermal boundary layer on a horizontal wall. The bubble is elongated under the influence of electrical forces, the effect being more pronounced for stronger electrical fields. The electric field is found to promote earlier detachment of the bubble at a smaller volume, thus increasing the bubble frequency. The wall heat flux during the process of detachment is not much affected by the electric field
