The influences of the Big Five personality traits on academic achievements: Chain mediating effect based on major identity and self-efficacy
This study mainly verified the influences of personality traits on students’ academic achievements and assessed the mediating effects of major identity and self-efficacy, under the classical model of chain mediating effects, with the data of business major students. The results show that both extraversion and conscientiousness have positive total effect on students’ academic achievements, and they are mainly realized through the chain mediating effects of self-efficacy and major identity to self-efficacy, and are mainly based on self-efficacy mediating effect, which is more obvious in the dimension of behavioral efficacy. Openness also affects academic achievement through a self-efficacy mediating effect and major identity to self-efficacy chain mediating effect, but the degree of influence is weak, and the total effect is not significant; the overall effect of agreeableness personality on academic achievement is negative, and it is mainly reflected through direct effect. This finding suggests that academic achievement does not reflect students’ team ability and performance
Gelatin-based biomaterials and gelatin as an additive for chronic wound repair
Disturbing or disrupting the regular healing process of a skin wound may result in its progression to a chronic state. Chronic wounds often lead to increased infection because of their long healing time, malnutrition, and insufficient oxygen flow, subsequently affecting wound progression. Gelatin—the main structure of natural collagen—is widely used in biomedical fields because of its low cost, wide availability, biocompatibility, and degradability. However, gelatin may exhibit diverse tailored physical properties and poor antibacterial activity. Research on gelatin-based biomaterials has identified the challenges of improving gelatin’s poor antibacterial properties and low mechanical properties. In chronic wounds, gelatin-based biomaterials can promote wound hemostasis, enhance peri-wound antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and promote vascular and epithelial cell regeneration. In this article, we first introduce the natural process of wound healing. Second, we present the role of gelatin-based biomaterials and gelatin as an additive in wound healing. Liver-targeting MRI contrast agent based on galactose functionalized o-carboxymethyl chitosan
Commercial gadolinium (Gd)-based contrast agents (GBCAs) play important role in clinical diagnostic of hepatocellular carcinoma, but their diagnostic efficacy remained improved. As small molecules, the imaging contrast and window of GBCAs is limited by low liver targeting and retention. Herein, we developed a liver-targeting gadolinium (â…¢) chelated macromolecular MRI contrast agent based on galactose functionalized o-carboxymethyl chitosan, namely, CS-Ga-(Gd-DTPA)n, to improve hepatocyte uptake and liver retention. Compared to Gd-DTPA and non-specific macromolecular agent CS-(Gd-DTPA)n, CS-Ga-(Gd-DTPA)n showed higher hepatocyte uptake, excellent cell and blood biocompatibility in vitro. Furthermore, CS-Ga-(Gd-DTPA)n also exhibited higher relaxivity in vitro, prolonged retention and better T1-weighted signal enhancement in liver. At 10Â days post-injection of CS-Ga-(Gd-DTPA)n at a dose of 0.03Â mMÂ Gd/Kg, Gd had a little accumulation in liver with no liver function damage. The good performance of CS-Ga-(Gd-DTPA)n gives great confidence in developing liver-specifc MRI contrast agents for clinical translation

Optimizing management to conserve plant diversity and soil carbon stock of semi-arid grasslands on the Loess Plateau
Grassland recovery from degradation is increasingly occurring worldwide. Diverse managements have been considered as effective ways to restore degraded grassland, but it remains unclear how semi-arid grasslands respond to long-term grazing exclusion and fenced mowing. Here, a study was conducted under open grazing, grazing exclusion and fenced mowing in a semi-arid grassland on the Loess Plateau. We measured plant species composition and diversity, plant production, surface litter and soil water and carbon content. Shifts in grassland management led to significant divergence in plant community composition. Long-term grazing exclusion (35 years) significantly increased plant biomass, surface litter, soil water and carbon storage, but suppressed plant diversity compared to open grazing. Conversely, fenced mowing significantly increased plant diversity accompanying with a weak effect on soil carbon. Moreover, mowing significantly reduced surface litter and soil moisture, which have strong implications for nutrient depletion and soil drying. Our results suggest that introducing disturbances are necessary to safeguard biodiversity, and continuous mowing (5 years) belongs to over exploitation of the long-term protected grassland. Therefore, it is essential to optimize management with dual objectives of biodiversity and soil carbon sequestration in the future
Integrated analysis of miRNAome transcriptome and degradome reveals miRNA-target modules governing floral florescence development and senescence across early- and late-flowering genotypes in tree peony
As a candidate national flower of China, tree peony has extremely high ornamental, medicinal and oil value. However, the short florescence and rarity of early-flowering and late-flowering varieties restrict further improvement of the economic value of tree peony. Specific miRNAs and their target genes engaged in tree peony floral florescence, development and senescence remain unknown. This report presents the integrated analysis of the miRNAome, transcriptome and degradome of tree peony petals collected from blooming, initial flowering, full blooming and decay stages in early-flowering variety Paeonia ostii ‘Fengdan’, an early-flowering mutant line of Paeonia ostii ‘Fengdan’ and late-flowering variety Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Lianhe’. Transcriptome analysis revealed a transcript (‘psu.G.00014095’) which was annotated as a xyloglucan endotransglycosylase/hydrolase precursor XTH-25 and found to be differentially expressed across flower developmental stages in Paeonia ostii ‘Fengdan’ and Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Lianhe’. The miRNA-mRNA modules were presented significant enrichment in various pathways such as plant hormone signal transduction, indole alkaloid biosynthesis, arachidonic acid metabolism, folate biosynthesis, fatty acid elongation, and the MAPK signaling pathway. Multiple miRNA-mRNA-TF modules demonstrated the potential functions of MYB-related, bHLH, Trihelix, NAC, GRAS and HD-ZIP TF families in floral florescence, development, and senescence of tree peony. Comparative spatio-temporal expression investigation of eight floral-favored miRNA-target modules suggested that transcript ‘psu.T.00024044’ and microRNA mtr-miR166g-5p are involved in the floral florescence, development and senescence associated agronomic traits of tree peony. The results might accelerate the understanding of the potential regulation mechanism in regards to floral florescence, development and abscission, and supply guidance for tree peony breeding of varieties with later and longer florescence characteristics

Natural variation of RGN1a regulates grain number per panicle in japonica rice
The grain number per panicle (GNP) is an important yield component. Identifying naturally favorable variations in GNP will benefit high-yield rice breeding. Here, we performed a genome-wide association study using a mini-core collection of 266 cultivated rice accessions with deep sequencing data and investigated the phenotype for three years. Three genes, i.e., TOTOU1 (TUT1), Grain height date 7 (Ghd7), and Days to heading 7/Grain height date 7.1/Pseudo-Response Regulator37 (DTH7/Ghd7.1/OsPRR37), which regulate GNP, were found in the quantitative trait loci (QTL) identified in this study. A stable QTL, qGNP1.3, which showed a strong correlation with variations in GNP, was repeatedly detected. After functional and transgenic phenotype analysis, we identified a novel gene, regulator of grain number 1a (RGN1a), which codes for protein kinase, controlling GNP in rice. The RGN1a mutation caused 37.2%, 27.8%, 51.2%, and 25.5% decreases in grain number, primary branch number per panicle, secondary branch number per panicle, and panicle length, respectively. Furthermore, breeding utilization analysis revealed that the additive effects of the dominant allelic variants of RGN1a and DTH7 played a significant role in increasing the grain number per panicle in japonica rice. Our findings enrich the gene pool and provide an effective strategy for the genetic improvement of grain numbers
