    An efficient ant colony system based on receding horizon control for the aircraft arrival sequencing and scheduling problem

    The aircraft arrival sequencing and scheduling (ASS) problem is a salient problem in air traffic control (ATC), which proves to be nondeterministic polynomial (NP) hard. This paper formulates the ASS problem in the form of a permutation problem and proposes a new solution framework that makes the first attempt at using an ant colony system (ACS) algorithm based on the receding horizon control (RHC) to solve it. The resultant RHC-improved ACS algorithm for the ASS problem (termed the RHC-ACS-ASS algorithm) is robust, effective, and efficient, not only due to that the ACS algorithm has a strong global search ability and has been proven to be suitable for these kinds of NP-hard problems but also due to that the RHC technique can divide the problem with receding time windows to reduce the computational burden and enhance the solution's quality. The RHC-ACS-ASS algorithm is extensively tested on the cases from the literatures and the cases randomly generated. Comprehensive investigations are also made for the evaluation of the influences of ACS and RHC parameters on the performance of the algorithm. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is further enhanced by using a two-opt exchange heuristic local search.     Multi-neutron transfer coupling in sub-barrier 32S+90,96Zr fusion reactions

    The role of neutron transfers is investigated in the fusion process below the Coulomb barrier by analyzing 32S+90Zr and 32S+96Zr as benchmark reactions. A full coupled-channel calculation of the fusion excitation functions has been performed for both systems by using multi-neutron transfer coupling for the more neutron-rich reaction. The enhancement of fusion cross sections for 32S+96Zr is well reproduced at sub-barrier energies by NTFus code calculations including the coupling of the neutron-transfer channels following the Zagrebaev semiclassical model.     Metastable behavior of vortex matter in the electronic transport processes of homogenous superconductors

    We study numerically the effect of vortex pinning on the hysteresis voltage-temperature (V-T) loop of vortex matter. It is found that different types of the V-T loops result from different densities of vortex pinning center. An anticlockwise V-T loop is observed for the vortex system with dense pinning centers, whereas a clockwise V-T loop is brought about for vortices with dilute pinning centers. It is shown that the size of the V-T loop becomes smaller for lower experimental speed, higher magnetic field, or weak pinning strength. Our numerical observation is in good agreement with experiments

    Nuclear halo and its scaling laws

    We have proposed a procedure to extract the probability for valence particle being out of the binding potential from the measured nuclear asymptotic normalization coefficients. With this procedure, available data regarding the nuclear halo candidates are systematically analyzed and a number of halo nuclei are confirmed. Based on these results we have got a much relaxed condition for nuclear halo occurrence. Furthermore, we have presented the scaling laws for the dimensionless quantity /R2/R^{2} of nuclear halo in terms of the analytical expressions of the expectation value for the operator r2r^{2} in a finite square-well potential.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

    Purple dwarfs : New L subdwarfs from UKIDSS and SDSS

Less than ten L subdwarfs been published in the literature to date. Metal-poor ultracool atmospheres has not been well understood. Halo mass function cross substellar limit has not been measured. We used UKIDSS and SDSS to search for L subdwarfs. We have confirmed some new L subdwarfs and are following up more candidates with ground based large telescopes. We discussed spectral features of L subdwarfs and halo brown dwarfs

    Degree-distribution Stability of Growing Networks

    In this paper, we abstract a kind of stochastic processes from evolving processes of growing networks, this process is called growing network Markov chains. Thus the existence and the formulas of degree distribution are transformed to the corresponding problems of growing network Markov chains. First we investigate the growing network Markov chains, and obtain the condition in which the steady degree distribution exists and get its exact formulas. Then we apply it to various growing networks. With this method, we get a rigorous, exact and unified solution of the steady degree distribution for growing networks.Comment: 12 page

    Effect of Na doping on flux pinning of YBa1.9Na0.1Cu3O7-d

    We have prepared Na-doped YBa2Cu3Oy (YBa1.9Na0.1Cu3Oy +40mol%Y211) (YBNCO) and Na-free YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) samples by the Melt-Textured Growth (MTG) method to study the effect of doped Na ion on flux pinning. The ac susceptibility curves (acs) as well as the hysteresis loops were measured for the samples. Then the effective pinning energy (U(T,Hdc,J)), irreversibility line (Hirr(T)) and critical current density (jc(Hdc)) were determined, where T, Hdc and J are temperature, dc magnetic field and current density, respectively. We found that, with Na doping, the Hirr(T) line shifted to lower temperature while the Jc(Hdc) and U(T,Hdc,J) became smaller. It indicates that the Na ions play a negative role in the flux pinning of YBCO. The appearance of the second peak in the Jc(Hdc) curves and the enhancement of anisotropy in YBNCO further support this finding.Comment: 7 pages, 7figures. Submited to Physica.

    Influence of long-term application of N and S fertilizers (1980-2002) and liming in 1992 on dry matter yield of grass and soil properties in a Dark Gray Chernozem in north-central Saskatchewan

    Non-Peer ReviewedMost soils are deficient in plant-available N in the Prairie Provinces of Canada, and in the Parkland region, many soils are also insufficient in available S for high crop yields. Long-term field experiments, initiated in 1980 and 1996 on a Dark Gray Chernozem loam soil at Canwood in north-central Saskatchewan, were conducted to determine the effects of N, S and lime application and forage removal on forage dry matter yield (DMY) and soil properties. The results indicated that application of N or S alone had only a little effect on DMY, while application of N together with S substantially increased DMY. Decline of soil pH by annual applications of N and S fertilizers mainly happened in the 0-5 cm layer. In layers below 10 cm, soil pH tended to increase with N or NS fertilization. Surface application of granular lime increased soil pH mainly in the 0-5 cm layer, and the high pH was maintained for at least 9 years. The TOC and TN mass in the 0-7.5 cm soil layer increased with annual applications of N and S fertilizers, and the increase was more pronounced with application of N and S together. In the subsoil layers, the N treatment tended to decrease, but the NS treatment tended to increase the TOC and TN. This suggests that application of N and S together was more effective in increasing C and N sequestration in a soil deficient in both N and S
