    HIV/Aids Relative Survival and Mean Residual Life Analysis BY XINJIAN ZHANG Under the Direction of Gengsheng (Jeff) Qin and Ruiguang (Rick) Song ABSTRACT Generalized linear models with Poisson error were applied to investigate HIV/AIDS relative survival. Relative excess risk for death within 3 years after HIV/AIDS diagnosis was significantly higher for non-Hispanic blacks, American Indians and Hispanics compared with Whites. Excess hazard for death was also higher in men injection drug users compared with men who have sex with men (MSM). The relative excess hazard of old HIV/AIDS patients is significantly higher compared with younger patients. When CD4 increased, the relative excess hazard decreased; while with the increase of HIV viral load, the relative excess hazard decreased. This is the first study to use national wide data to examine the significance of HIV viral load as a determinant risk factor of disease progression after HIV infection; The mean residual lie needs to be further analyzed.     Correlation effects in the electronic structure of the Ni-based superconducting KNi2S2

    The LDA plus Gutzwiller variational method is used to investigate the groundstate physical properties of the newly discovered superconducting KNi2S2. Five Ni-3d Wannier-orbital basis are constructed by the density-functional theory, to combine with local Coulomb interaction to describe the normal state electronic structure of Ni-based superconductor. The band structure and the mass enhanced are studied based on a multiorbital Hubbard model by using Gutzwiller approximation method. Our results indicate that the correlation effects lead to the mass enhancement of KNi2S2. Different from the band structure calculated from the LDA results, there are three energy bands across the Fermi level along the X-Z line due to the existence of the correlation effects, which induces a very complicated Fermi surface along the X-Z line. We have also investigated the variation of the quasi-particle weight factor with the hole or electron doping and found that the mass enhancement character has been maintained with the doping.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

    AbstractThis paper analyzes the imbalance between e-commerce and logistics service by using factor sub-game perfect Nash equilibrium as an analytical tool from the view of system and links up the bargaining process between sellers and express enterprise involved in service engineering during online shopping with discount factor. The change of interests between sellers and express enterprise is systematically analyzed from the perspective of discount factor on the equilibrium solution through the application of model towards service engineering during holidays online shopping. Finally it is concluded that discount factor is a key factor influencing the express fee between sells and express enterprise in logistic system, and some recommendations are put forward accordingly

    Lateral Stiffness and Damping Coefficient of Soils for Seismic Analysis of Buried Pipelines

    The stiffness and damping coefficient of soil are critical parameters in the Winkler\u27s model for the seismic analysis of buried pipelines. This paper presents an analytical study in calculating the lateral dynamic stiffness (elastic and inelastic) and damping coefficient of soils for the seismic analysis of buried pipelines. The effects of the depth of the buried pipeline and the variation of Poisson\u27s ratio of soils are cons1dered. In the analysts, first, by using the elastic half-space theory, the elastic stiffness and geometrical damping coefficient of soils are obtained. From the numerical results, the elastic stiffness and geometrical damping coefficient by using best fitted formulas are presented. Secondly, empirical inelastic characteristics of soils are considered. The empirical data includes relationships among dynamic shear modulus, material damping ratio, and dynamic shear strain amplitude. The total damping coefficient of the system can be obtained by adding the material damping to the geometrical damping coefficient

    Bacillus megaterium BMJBN02 induces the resistance of grapevine against downy mildew

    Grape downy mildew caused by Plasmopara viticola is one of the most destructive diseases of grapes. All grape cultivars are susceptible to P. viticola. However, the resistance of grape plants could be induced in plant defense with some help of microbes. In this study, Bacillus megaterium BMJBN02 obtained from farmland soil was shown to regulate the resistance of grapevine against downy mildew. The salicylic acid (SA) content and the expression of pathogenesis-related (PR) genes of grapes under different treatments were examined using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and reverse transcription- quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and it was found that SA content and the expression of PR genes could play a role in regulating the resistance of grapevine against downy mildew. The five-year plot experiment showed that the resistance effectiveness of isolate BMJBN02 was approximately equal to that of 0.1 % nicotinyl morpholine (commercial fungicide). Therefore, this study provides a valuable candidate method that uses B. megaterium BMJBN02 by regulating the resistance of grape against downy mildew for quality and yield of grape in commercial productivity

    Primer Extension Enrichment Reaction (PEER): a new subtraction method for identification of genetic differences between biological specimens

    We developed a conceptually new subtraction strategy for the detection and isolation of target DNA and/or RNA from complex nucleic acid mixtures, called Primer Extension Enrichment Reaction (PEER). PEER uses adapters and class IIS restriction enzymes to generate tagged oligonucleotides from dsDNA fragments derived from specimens containing an unknown target (‘tester’). Subtraction is achieved by selectively disabling these oligonucleotides by extension reaction using ddNTPs and a double stranded DNA template generated from a pool of normal specimens (‘driver’). Primers that do not acquire ddNTP are used to capture and amplify the unique target DNA from the original tester dsDNA. We successfully applied PEER to specimens containing known infectious agents (Hepatitis B Virus and Walrus Calicivirus) and demonstrated that it has higher efficiency than the best comparable technique. The strategy used for PEER is versatile and can be adapted for the identification of known and unknown pathogens and mutations, differential expression studies and other applications that allow the use of subtractive strategies

    Fast Specimen Boundary Tracking and Local Imaging with Scanning Probe Microscopy

    An efficient and adaptive boundary tracking method is developed to confine area of interest for high-efficiency local scanning. By using a boundary point determination criterion, the scanning tip is steered with a sinusoidal waveform while estimating azimuth angle and radius ratio of each boundary point to accurately track the boundary of targets. A local scan region and path are subsequently planned based on the prior knowledge of boundary tracking to reduce the scan time. Boundary tracking and local scanning methods have great potential not only for fast dimension measurement but also for sample surface topography and physical characterization, with only scanning region of interest. The performance of the proposed methods was verified by using the alternate current mode scanning ion-conductance microscopy, tapping, and PeakForce modulation atomic force microscopy. Experimental results of single/multitarget boundary tracking and local scanning of target structures with complex boundaries demonstrate the flexibility and validity of the proposed method
