SamACO: variable sampling ant colony optimization algorithm for continuous optimization
An ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm offers
algorithmic techniques for optimization by simulating the foraging behavior of a group of ants to perform incremental solution
constructions and to realize a pheromone laying-and-following
mechanism. Although ACO is first designed for solving discrete
(combinatorial) optimization problems, the ACO procedure is
also applicable to continuous optimization. This paper presents
a new way of extending ACO to solving continuous optimization
problems by focusing on continuous variable sampling as a key
to transforming ACO from discrete optimization to continuous
optimization. The proposed SamACO algorithm consists of three
major steps, i.e., the generation of candidate variable values for
selection, the antsâ solution construction, and the pheromone
update process. The distinct characteristics of SamACO are the
cooperation of a novel sampling method for discretizing the
continuous search space and an efficient incremental solution
construction method based on the sampled values. The performance
of SamACO is tested using continuous numerical functions
with unimodal and multimodal features. Compared with some
state-of-the-art algorithms, including traditional ant-based algorithms
and representative computational intelligence algorithms
for continuous optimization, the performance of SamACO is seen
competitive and promising
Effects of ca treatments and temperature on broccoli colour development
Broccoli combines high contents of vitamins, fibres and glucosinolates with a low calorie count and is sometimes referred to as the âcrown jewel of nutritionâ. Colour is one of the most important quality attributes of broccoli, and yellowing due to senescence of broccoli florets is the main external quality problem in the broccoli supply chain. Controlled Atmosphere (CA) is a very effective method to maintain broccoli quality but the effects of CA on colour retention have not been studied extensively. The aim of this paper is to characterise the colour behaviour (measured by RGB colour image analysis) of broccoli as affected by CA and temperature. Data on colour behaviour and gas exchange were gathered for broccoli heads that were stored in containers at three temperatures and subjected to four levels of O2 and three levels of CO2. Gas conditions and temperature have a clear effect on the colour change of broccoli especially at low O2 in combination with high CO2. An integrated colour model is proposed that combines a colour model with a standard gas exchange model. The colour model is based on three differential equations describing the formation of (blue/green) chlorophyllide from the colourless precursor, the bidirectional conversion of chlorophyllide into (blue/green) chlorophyll, and the decay of chlorophyllide. During the first step of building the integrated model, gas exchange data were analysed simultaneously using multi response regression analysis. No fermentation was encountered for this batch of broccoli. During the second step it was found that only one of the reactions of the colour model, the decay of chlorophyllide, is affected by the gas conditions. In the final step, a multi-response approach was applied where gas exchange parameters were estimated using the gas exchange model, the colour parameters were estimated using the colour model with both models linked via the reaction rate constant affected by the gas conditions. Such a calibrated, integrated, model could be used as a tool for predicting colour change in the postharvest chain
A Large-scale Distributed Video Parsing and Evaluation Platform
Visual surveillance systems have become one of the largest data sources of
Big Visual Data in real world. However, existing systems for video analysis
still lack the ability to handle the problems of scalability, expansibility and
error-prone, though great advances have been achieved in a number of visual
recognition tasks and surveillance applications, e.g., pedestrian/vehicle
detection, people/vehicle counting. Moreover, few algorithms explore the
specific values/characteristics in large-scale surveillance videos. To address
these problems in large-scale video analysis, we develop a scalable video
parsing and evaluation platform through combining some advanced techniques for
Big Data processing, including Spark Streaming, Kafka and Hadoop Distributed
Filesystem (HDFS). Also, a Web User Interface is designed in the system, to
collect users' degrees of satisfaction on the recognition tasks so as to
evaluate the performance of the whole system. Furthermore, the highly
extensible platform running on the long-term surveillance videos makes it
possible to develop more intelligent incremental algorithms to enhance the
performance of various visual recognition tasks.Comment: Accepted by Chinese Conference on Intelligent Visual Surveillance

Kondo hybridisation and the origin of metallic states at the (001) surface of SmB6
SmB6, a well-known Kondo insulator, has been proposed to be an ideal
topological insulator with states of topological character located in a clean,
bulk electronic gap, namely the Kondo hybridisation gap. Seeing as the Kondo
gap arises from many body electronic correlations, this would place SmB6 at the
head of a new material class: topological Kondo insulators. Here, for the first
time, we show that the k-space characteristics of the Kondo hybridisation
process is the key to unravelling the origin of the two types of metallic
states observed directly by ARPES in the electronic band structure of
SmB6(001). One group of these states is essentially of bulk origin, and cuts
the Fermi level due to the position of the chemical potential 20 meV above the
lowest lying 5d-4f hybridisation zone. The other metallic state is more
enigmatic, being weak in intensity, but represents a good candidate for a
topological surface state. However, before this claim can be substantiated by
an unequivocal measurement of its massless dispersion relation, our data raises
the bar in terms of the ARPES resolution required, as we show there to be a
strong renormalisation of the hybridisation gaps by a factor 2-3 compared to
theory, following from the knowledge of the true position of the chemical
potential and a careful comparison with the predictions from recent
LDA+Gutzwiler calculations. All in all, these key pieces of evidence act as
triangulation markers, providing a detailed description of the electronic
landscape in SmB6, pointing the way for future, ultrahigh resolution ARPES
experiments to achieve a direct measurement of the Dirac cones in the first
topological Kondo insulator.Comment: 9 pages, 4 Figures and supplementary material (including Movies and

Alternative scheme for two-qubit conditional phase gate by adiabatic passage under dissipation
We check a recent proposal [H. Goto and K. Ichimura Phys. Rev. A 70, 012305
(2004)] for controlled phase gate through adiabatic passage under the influence
of spontaneous emission and the cavity decay. We show a modification of above
proposal could be used to generate the necessary conditional phase gates in the
two-qubit Grover search. Conditioned on no photon leakage either from the
atomic excited state or from the cavity mode during the gating period, we
numerically analyze the success probability and the fidelity of the two-qubit
conditional phase gate by adiabatic passage. The comparison made between our
proposed gating scheme and a previous one shows that Goto and Ichimura's scheme
is an alternative and feasible way in the optical cavity regime for two-qubit
gates and could be generalised in principle to multi-qubit gates.Comment: to appear in J. Phys.
