A Cognitive Study of the Construction of Killing Scenes in Chinese TV Series

    Get PDF
Killing scenes are bloody and can make people feel sick and uncomfortable. Therefore, they are usually partially presented in film and TV works. Yet the audience can still work out the whole killing scene. The underlying mechanism has been sparsely investigated. The current study explores the underlying mechanism by devising a model integrating the Killing Scenario and the concept of multimodal low-level situational metonymy. Through case studies of killing scenes in some Chinese TV series, the paper finds that multimodal situational metonymy is the underlying cognitive mechanism and can well explain how the audience construct the whole killing scenes on the basis of partial clues

2-{2,6-Bis[bis(4-fluorophenyl)methyl]-4-chlorophenylimino} -3-aryliminobutylnickel(II) bromide complexes: Synthesis, characterization, and investigation of their catalytic behavior

The series of 2-{2,6-bis[di(4-fluorophenyl)methyl]-4-chlorophenylimino}-3- aryliminobutane derivatives (L1-L5) and their nickel(II) dibromide complexes (Ni1-Ni5) were synthesized, and all organic compounds were fully characterized by the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and by elemental analysis, while the nickel complexes were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, as well as by single-crystal X-ray diffraction for two representative examples, namely Ni1 and Ni4. A distorted tetrahedral geometry was observed for these four-coordinate nickel complexes. Upon the activation with either Methylaluminoxane or modified methylaluminoxane as co-catalyst, all nickel complex precatalysts showed very high activity toward ethylene polymerization with activities of up to 10 7 g(PE)·mol -1 (Ni)·h -1 , and afforded highly branched polyethylene with a bimodal distribution. © 2014 Elsevier B.V

Death Metaphors in Chinese TV Series: Four Case Studies

    Get PDF
Death has been a taboo subject in Chinese culture. Studying how Chinese people conceptualize death is an important way to better understanding Chinese culture. The current paper adopts the multimodal metaphor theory as the theoretical foundation and explores the death metaphors in some Chinese TV series. The present study finds five death metaphors, and they are DEATH IS DOWN, DEATH IS SETTING, DEATH IS GOING OUT, DEATH IS BIRTH and DEATH IS DARKNESS. The source domains are presented in the mode of pictorial signs and color while the target domain is presented by the mode of pictorial signs alone, or the mode of spoken signs alone, or sometimes by the two simultaneously

Square character degree graphs yield direct products

If GG is a solvable group, we take Δ(G)\Delta (G) to be the character degree graph for GG with primes as vertices. We prove that if Δ(G)\Delta (G) is a square, then GG must be a direct product
