    Different Associations of Animal Words in English and Chinese and the Relevant Translation Strategies

    There are a large number of phrases containing animal words both in English and Chinese. However, many associative meanings concerning animal words existing in English and Chinese cultures are different or even opposite due to historical and cultural differences. In order to translate relevant phrases correctly, translator should know the different associations of animal words in English and Chinese. This paper aims at pointing out associative differences of a large quantity of animal words in English and Chinese as well as dealing with translation of animal idioms and relevant phrases with domestication, foreignization, and domestication or foreignization plus explanation so as to reach dynamic equivalence of source language and target language in translation

    An Ecological Study on A Sand County Almanac

    Aldo Leopold is an American author, scientist, ecologist, conservationist, environmentalist, whose most outstanding and representative work A Sand County Almanac is filled with abundant and deep ecological thoughts. This paper intends to explore Leopold’s ecological thoughts in this book. First, Leopold redefines the relationship between nature and human beings. He states that human beings are part of nature and should show love and respect for it; second, Leopold proposes the famous and significant land ethic theory, which establishes a basis for new ecological ethics. He enlarges the ethic range to land and to the whole nature, sets the criteria of land ethic, and describes the importance of ecological conscience which is fundamentally helpful to solve ecological crisis and protect the ecosystem; third, Leopold elaborates on the values of wilderness, such as the recreational value,the ecological value, the aesthetic value, the scientific value, the ecological value and the cultural value.Nowadays, all these ecological thoughts are still meaningful for people to know and love the nature, to protect the land and the wilderness

    Acute Response of Peripheral Blood Cell to Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Type 1 Diabetic Patient

    Autologous nonmyeloablative hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHST) was the first therapeutic approach that can improve β cell function in type 1 diabetic (T1D) patients. This study was designed to investigate the potential mechanisms involved.We applied AHST to nine T1D patients diagnosed within six months and analyzed the acute responses in peripheral blood for lymphocyte subpopulation as well as for genomic expression profiling at the six-month follow-up.We found six patients obtained insulin free (IF group) and three remained insulin dependent (ID group); C-peptide production was significantly higher in IF group compared to ID group. The acute responses in lymphocytes at six-month follow-up include declined CD3(+)CD4(+), CD3(+)CD8(+) T cell population and recovered B cell, NK cell population in both groups but with no significant differences between the two groups; most immune-related genes and pathways were up-regulated in peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) of both groups while none of transcription factors for immune regulatory component were significantly changed; the IF group demonstrated more AHST-modified genetic events than the ID group and distinct pattern of top pathways, co-expression network as well as 'hub' genes (eg, TCF7 and GZMA) were associated with each group.AHST could improve the islet function in newly diagnosed T1D patients and elimination of the islet specific autoreactive T cells might be one of the mechanisms involved; T1D patients responded differently to AHST possibly due to the distinct transcriptional events occurring in PBMC.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00807651

    Frailty-originated early rehabilitation reduces postoperative delirium in brain tumor patients: Results from a prospective randomized study

    Objective: To investigate the impact of frailty-originated, evidence-based early activity training on postoperative delirium in patients who have undergone brain tumor resection. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, from July 2019 to June 2020. Data on the patients' general information, incidence and duration of delirium, duration of hospital stay, and activities of daily living were collected. From the first day after surgery, the patients were randomly assigned to either the traditional care group or the frailty-originated rehabilitation towards intracranial tumors using distinct evidence (FORTITUDE) group. Non-parametric, chi-square, and log-rank tests were used to compare the onset time and duration of postoperative delirium and activities of daily living performed by the participants between the two groups. Results: In total, 291 patients, 150 and 141 in the control group and FORTITUDE group, respectively, participated in the study. Patients in the FORTITUDE group had a lower incidence of postoperative delirium (15.6% vs. 28.7%, P ​= ​0.007), delayed onset of delirium (Z ​= ​−2.108, P ​= ​0.035), shorter duration of postoperative delirium (χ2 ​= ​26.67, P ​< ​0.001), shorter hospital stay (Z ​= ​−2.037, P ​= ​0.042), and higher scores in the activities of daily living one week (Z ​= ​−2.304, P ​= ​0.021) and one month (Z ​= ​−2.724, P ​= ​0.006) after surgery than in the control group. Conclusions: The FORTITUDE program was safe and effective in reducing the incidence and duration of postoperative delirium and improving the quality of life of patients who underwent brain tumor resection

    Comparison of Citrus Leaf Water Content Estimations Based on the Continuous Wavelet Transform and Fractional Derivative Methods

    Citrus tangerines are famous fruits worldwide, and monitoring the water content of citrus leaves is highly important for citrus production. However, there are still challenges in quantitatively estimating the water content of citrus leaves using hyperspectral technology, and the random noise generated during spectral acquisition and the overlapping peaks in the sensitive band of the citrus leaf water content will affect estimation accuracy. To solve these problems and further explore the roles of the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and fractional-order derivative (FOD) in the estimation of citrus leaf water content, this study intends to use of CWT and FOD to decompose the original spectrum, and then compare the correlation between the original spectrum and leaf water content to explore whether the decomposition treatment has improved the correlation between spectrum and leaf moisture content. Then, the successive projections algorithm (SPA) was used to select feature bands and combine spectral vegetation indices. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was used to construct water-content inversion models for citrus leaves, and the inversion accuracies of two commonly used spectral preprocessing methods were compared. The results indicate that (1) the CWT can improve the sensitivity of the spectrum to the citrus leaf water content to a certain extent, and the inversion accuracy of the CWT is approximately 5% greater than that of the FOD. (2) On the basis of the CWT and FOD methods, the inversion accuracy of the citrus leaf water content based on SPA screening increased by 9.61% and 9.29%, respectively, compared with the original spectrum. (3) Under CWT decomposition, Scale4 of the Gaus1 wavelet was screened by the SPA, and the inversion model of citrus leaf water content was constructed by combining the spectral vegetation index NDVI with the best results. The R-squared (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) values were 0.7491 and 0.0284, respectively, which were both 0.0138 greater than those of the best inversion model for the FOD R2. In conclusion, the CWT-SPA combined with the spectral vegetation index can improve the sensitivity of the spectrum to the citrus leaf water content, eliminate a large amount of redundant data, and enhance the prediction ability and stability of the citrus leaf water content

    Coreopsis tinctoria and Its Flavonoids Ameliorate Hyperglycemia in Obese Mice Induced by High-Fat Diet

    With the prevalence of obesity all over the world, human health has been seriously affected. In particular, the number of diabetic and cardiovascular diseases has increased dramatically. The herb Coreopsis tinctoria (C. tinctoria) shows diverse biological and pharmacological activities, which are mainly attributed to its flavonoids. However, the specific functional substances that play an active role in C. tinctoria remain unclear, and its mechanism has not been deeply explored. In this study, we established a diet-induced obesity (DIO) mice model and treated mice with C. tinctoria or kaempferol for 8 weeks. The results showed that both C. tinctoria and kaempferol lowered body weight, reduced fasting blood glucose, and improved glucose tolerance and insulin resistance to alleviate obesity in DIO mice. The level of hemoglobin A1c also decreased significantly after treatment with C. tinctoria and kaempferol. Moreover, the administration of C. tinctoria and kaempferol also restored gut microbiota imbalance and significantly increased Desulfovibrio and Butyricimonas levels, which have been reported to improve glucose metabolism and intestinal health. In general, our study shows that C. tinctoria is a potential hypoglycemic substance for obesity and may reduce blood glucose by regulating gut microbiota, and that kaempferol is one of the effective substances of C. tinctoria

    Cord Blood Manganese Concentrations in Relation to Birth Outcomes and Childhood Physical Growth: A Prospective Birth Cohort Study

    Gestational exposure to manganese (Mn), an essential trace element, is associated with fetal and childhood physical growth. However, it is unclear which period of growth is more significantly affected by prenatal Mn exposure. The current study was conducted to assess the associations of umbilical cord-blood Mn levels with birth outcomes and childhood continuous physical development. The umbilical cord-blood Mn concentrations of 1179 mother&ndash;infant pairs in the Sheyang mini birth cohort were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). The association of cord-blood Mn concentrations with birth outcomes, and the BMI z-score at 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8 years old, were estimated separately using generalized linear models. The relationship between prenatal Mn exposure and BMI z-score trajectory was assessed with generalized estimating equation models. The median of cord-blood Mn concentration was 29.25 &mu;g/L. Significantly positive associations were observed between Mn exposure and ponderal index (&beta;, regression coefficient = 0.065, 95% CI, confidence interval: 0.021, 0.109; p = 0.004). Mn exposure was negatively associated with the BMI z-score of children aged 1, 2, and 3 years (&beta; = &minus;0.383 to &minus;0.249, p &lt; 0.05), while no significant relationships were found between Mn exposure and the BMI z-score of children at the age of 6, 7, and 8 years. Prenatal Mn exposure was related to the childhood BMI z-score trajectory (&beta; = &minus;0.218, 95% CI: &minus;0.416, &minus;0.021; p = 0.030). These results indicated that prenatal Mn exposure was positively related to the ponderal index (PI), and negatively related to physical growth in childhood, which seemed most significant at an early stage

    Differentiation of Epinephelus moara from E. bruneus by improved nest-tetra-primer-specific PCR

    Epinephelus moara and E. bruneus are closely related species in the genus Epinephelus (Perciformes, Serranidae). Their morphological similarity, changing color pattern at different stages and living conditions make them difficult to be differentiated. To identify these two species, an improved nest-tetra-primer-specific PCR assay was developed. Three specific molecular markers, the control region NC1 (394 bp), species-specific internal region ND2-M (268 bp) and ND2-B (122 bp), were identified in the mitochondrial ND2 gene from these two grouper species. Five markers were also discovered in the ITS1 regions of their nuclear ribosomal DNA, which were the control regions NC2 (588 bp) and NC3 (563 bp), and species-specific internal regions rDNA-M (426 bp), ITS1-M (488 bp) and ITS1-B (304 bp). This method provided a highly specific, precise, reliable and rapid molecular marker technique to discriminate between the two grouper species, as well as a new way of DNA identification to differentiate closely related species in fishes.
