    Combined denoising filter for fringe pattern in electronic speckle shearing pattern interferometry

    We propose an effective image denoising filter that combines an improved spin filter (ISF) and wave atoms thresholding (WA) to remove the noise of fringe patterns in electronic speckle shearing pattern interferometry. The WA is first employed to denoise the fringe to save the processing time, and then the ISF is further used to remove noise of the denoised image using WA to obtain a better denoising performance. The performance of our proposed approach is evaluated by using both numerically simulated and experimental fringes. At the same time, three figures of merit for denoised fringes are also calculated to quantify the performance of the combined denoising filter. The denoised results produced by ISF, WA, and bilateral filtering are compared. The comparisons show that our proposed method can effectively remove noise and an improvement of 12 s in processing time and 0.3 in speckle index value is obtained with respect to ISF

    Phosphorus bioavailability: a key aspect for conserving this critical animal feed resource with reference to broiler nutrition

    Phosphorus (P) is an essential element, and the majority of animal feed phosphate is derived from phosphate rock that is a non-renewable resource. Current global P reserves may be depleted in 50–100 years. This poses the challenge of securing future P supply for the global animal feed industries. Currently, nutritionists formulate diets with substantial safety margins to guarantee that animals do not become P deficient. Excessive dietary P concentrations increase, not only the cost of diets, but also P excretion and pollution of the environment. We contend that understanding P bioavailability is central to the sustainable use of this mineral in animal agriculture. Poultry accounts for approximately 50% of animal feed phosphate consumption worldwide and for this reason we use the meat chicken or broiler as a case study to explore the nuances of P bioavailability. We conclude that, to tackle the challenge of dietary P bioavailability, cooperative research on a global scale is needed to standardise measurement procedures in order to produce a robust and reliable database which can be used by nutritionists to formulate diets to meet the bird’s P requirements precisely. Achievement of this goal will assist endeavours to sustain the global supply of phosphorus

    Method based on fast fourier transform for calculating conical refraction of beams with noncircular symmetry

    Conical refraction of optical beams with circular symmetry is often analyzed using Belsky-Khapalyuk-Berry (BKB) theory; however, for beams with noncircular symmetry, it is difficult to obtain analytical expressions for far-field diffraction patterns. We propose a method, based on fast Fourier transform (FFT), for calculating conical refraction of beams with noncircular symmetry and verify it experimentally using a quasi-plane wave passing through a square aperture and focusing lens. Excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental results has been achieved

    Effect of solid-state fermented and enzyme-supplemented lupins on performance and ileal amino acid digestibility in broiler chickens

    Context: The importance of lupin in animal nutrition has increased over the years due to its moderate protein content and relative availability. Low inclusion rate in broiler diet has been associated with the presence of antinutritional factors. The established beneficial effect of fermentation as a processing strategy and dietary enzyme use in improving the nutritional value of legumes such as lupins, thus, necessitated this study.Aims: This study determined the effect of solid-state fermented lupin (SSFLP) and enzyme-supplemented lupin (LP) on the performance and ileal amino acid digestibility in broiler chickens.Methods: In Experiment 1 (performance trial), a total of 300 day-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks were distributed into six dietary treatments, with five replicates of 10 birds each. Diet 1 was based on a corn–soybean meal (SBM), Diets 2 and 3 contained 250 g/kg LP and 250 g/kg SSFLP respectively. Diet 4 contained 250 g/kg LP + phytase (PHY). Diet 5 contained 250 g/kg LP + xylanase (XYL). Diet 6 contained 250 g/kg LP + PHY + XYL. PHY at 500 phytase units (FTU)/kg and XYL at 1000 units/kg were added to the respective diets. In Experiment 2 (digestibility trial), a total of 240 21-day-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks was assigned to six dietary treatments with five replicate cages of eight birds each. Diet 1 was based on SBM, Diets 2 and 3 contained 650 g/kg LP and 650 g/kg SSFLP respectively. Diet 4 contained 650 g/kg LP + PHY. Diet 5 contained 650 g/kg LP + XYL. Diet 6 contained 650 g/kg LP + PHY + XYL.Key results: Dietary inclusion of SBM and LP + PHY enhanced broiler performance from 1 to 21 days. PHY- supplemented LP diet improved birds’ bodyweight gain and feed intake compared with the rest of the LP diets. Dietary inclusion of LP + PHY + XYL improved the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of some amino acids (AA). SSF of LP had no effect on the AA contents, lowered AA digestibility and depressed weight gain in the birds. Although SSFLP diet did not improve performance, it effectively increased phosphorus (P) retention in broiler chickens. Feeding SSFLP and enzyme-supplemented LP diets enhanced the AID of calcium and P, as well as calcium retention.Conclusions: Adding supplemental PHY to LP diet enhanced broiler performance, as indicated by the BWG and FI of these birds, which were significantly higher than those of birds fed on other LP-based diets and comparable with those of birds fed on the SBM diet from 1 to 21 days. Although the SSFLP diet did not improve broiler performance, it was effective in increasing P retention when compared with LP diets. The inclusion of LP + PHY + XYL diet improved the AID of amino acids.Implications: SSFLP is a promising feed ingredient and can have a potential application in feed formulation. However, further studies are still needed to be able to clearly understand its effect at a high inclusion level on the performance and ileal amino acid digestibility in broiler chickens. The development of cocktail inoculants to target all ANFs in lupins will definitely open a new window for the poultry feed industry

    Liquid Lens with Large Focal Length Tunability Fabricated in a Polyvinyl Chloride/Dibutyl Phthalate Gel Tube

    Usually, an adaptive liquid lens only has a positive focal length, which severely limits its application in imaging and other fields. Therefore, a liquid lens consisting of polyvinyl chloride/dibutyl phthalate (PVC/DBP) gel, glycerol solution, and a glass substrate is proposed to extend the dynamic focal length range. A spherical tube is formed by the PVC/DBP gel under the effect of hydrostatic and surface tensions, which is used to restrict the glycerol solution. The PVC/DBP gel does not deform under the effect of an electric field, so the tangent line at the three-phase junction changes with the change of contact angle, which leads to an enlargement of the dynamic focal length range. At different voltage values, the proposed lens can be configured to work in three different schemes, namely, converging light, nondeflecting light, and diverging light. Here, the proposed lens has high imaging quality; the resolution is better than 114 lp/mm. A lens with a reconfigurable focal length holds great promise in diverse applications such as fluorescence detection, beam shaping, and adaptive optics
