Life microhistories and Hidden Atlantic. The ‘Africans‘ Daniel Botefeur and Robin Botefeur in Africa, the Atlantic and Cuba
That is a microhistory of two passages from Africa to Cub. Roberto, enslaved, had lived in Gambia (Bance-Island) and fell into slavery around 1800. Daniel Botefeur, a German who had studied medicine, had arrived a little earlier to Bance Island. He bought Roberto. Around 1815, both moved to Cuba, where Daniel Botefeur is part of the new cosmopolitan slave-owner elite and Roberto Botefeur is part of the enslaved, but also cosmopolitan. That is a cosmopolitanism “from below” or an African, Atlantic, and American-Cuban creolization. In 1818 both fall in a court case over the self-purchase (coartación) of the slave.
