DynImp: Dynamic Imputation for Wearable Sensing Data Through Sensory and Temporal Relatedness

In wearable sensing applications, data is inevitable to be irregularly sampled or partially missing, which pose challenges for any downstream application. An unique aspect of wearable data is that it is time-series data and each channel can be correlated to another one, such as x, y, z axis of accelerometer. We argue that traditional methods have rarely made use of both times-series dynamics of the data as well as the relatedness of the features from different sensors. We propose a model, termed as DynImp, to handle different time point's missingness with nearest neighbors along feature axis and then feeding the data into a LSTM-based denoising autoencoder which can reconstruct missingness along the time axis. We experiment the model on the extreme missingness scenario (>50%>50\% missing rate) which has not been widely tested in wearable data. Our experiments on activity recognition show that the method can exploit the multi-modality features from related sensors and also learn from history time-series dynamics to reconstruct the data under extreme missingness.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted in ICASSP'202

This study investigated the effect of NaCl stress on Na+ and K+ absorption and transport by roots, nitrogen and phosphorus content in leaves, PSII photochemical activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in leaves of mulberry own-root seedlings and grafted seedlings. To determine the response, own-root seedlings of a high yielding mulberry cultivar, Tieba mulberry (Morus alba L.), and the grafted seedlings, obtained by using Qinglong mulberry with high salt tolerance as rootstock and Tieba mulberry as scion, were used. The Na+ content in roots and leaves of grafted seedlings was significantly lower than that in own-root seedlings under salt stress; while K+ content in roots and leaves of grafted seedlings was significantly higher than that in own-root seedlings. The root activity in grafted seedlings was significantly higher than that in own-root seedlings, as well as the content of nitrogen, phosphorous and water. PSII photochemical activity in leaves of grafted seedlings was less significantly affected by salt stress compared to own-root seedlings. The electron transport at the acceptor side of PSII from QA to QB was less affected by salt stress, which resulted in a significantly lower ROS content in leaves of grafted seedlings than that of own-root seedlings. Therefore, grafting high-yielding and good-quality Tieba mulberry with salt tolerant Qinglong mulberry as rootstock showed a relatively high salt tolerance. This may be because (1) the root system of rootstock presented high Na+ resistance and has selective absorption capacity for Na+ and K+ (2) the root system of rootstock prevented excess Na+ from being transported to aerial parts in order to reduce adverse effects of Na+ (3) the root system of rootstock had enhanced root activity under salt stress, which accelerated water and nutrient absorption (4) the leaves of grafted seedlings had higher PSII photochemical activity and electron transport rate compared with those of own-root seedlings under salt stress, which effectively reduced ROS burst mediated by photosynthesis and reduced oxidative damage

Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

Abstract This study investigated the contrast of environmental identity and animal attitudes between male and female. A total of 387 participants (170males and 217females) were selected by snowball sampling for online questionnaires. Questionnaire survey method was adopted, T test and Pearson correlation analysis method were used to obtain the results. Result shows that: (1) the environmental identity of the male group was slightly lower than that of the female group with a significant difference. (2) There was no significant difference on animal attitudes between male and female. (3) The correlation between environmental identity and animal attitudes was significant. Nowadays, environmental identity and animal attitude have received increasing attention in China. This study only carries on the comparative analysis from the male and female difference. We can study the age, education level, urban and rural differences and other situational factors, which is also a good research direction in the future.</p

Abstract This study investigated the differences of environmental values of Chinese people across the country and between men and women. Questionnaire survey method was adopted, T test and variance analysis were used to obtain the results. Result shows that: the overall score of the male NEP scale was significantly lower than that of the female. From the mean value of the five dimensions of environmental values, environmental education should be carried out continuously, with special emphasis on men.</p

Au@MOFs used as peroxidase-like catalytic nanozyme for bacterial infected wound healing through bacterial membranes disruption and protein leakage promotion

Bacterial biofilms often hinder the healing of infected chronic wounds. Hence, it is significant to explore ways to destroy bacterial biofilms. In this work, a photothermal therapy strategy of designing Au clusters modified ZIF-8 MOFs (Au@ZIF-8) as peroxidase-like catalytic nanozyme was proposed for bacterial infected wound healing. Under near-infrared laser (NIR), the prepared Au@ZIF-8 present enhanced peroxidase-like activity and excellent photothermal response properties. Au@ZIF-8 achieved bacterial membrane disruption rate of 66.3% and MRSA clearance rate up to 97%. Au@ZIF-8 also catalyzed endogenous H2O2 to ·OH and achieved almost 97.4% healing rate in animal experiments. The prepared Au@ZIF-8 with peroxidase-like catalytic nanozyme properties has great potential in the treatment of infected diabetic wounds through bacterial membranes disruption and protein leakage promotion

Novel maturity parameters for mature to over-mature source rocks and oils based on the distribution of phenanthrene series compounds

Pyrolysis experiments of a low-mature bitumen sample originated from Cambrian was conducted in gold capsules. Abundance and distribution of phenanthrene series compounds in pyrolysis products were measured by GC-MS to investigate their changes with thermal maturity. Several maturity parameters based on the distribution of phenanthrene series compounds have been discussed. The results indicate that the distribution changes of phenanthrene series compounds are complex, and cannot be explained by individual reaction process during thermal evolution. The dealkylation cannot explain the increase of phenanthrene within the EasyRo range of 0.9% ∼ 2.1%. Adding of phenanthrene into maturity parameters based on the methylphenanthrene isomerization is unreasonable, even though MPI 1 and MPI 2 could be used to some extent. Two additional novel and an optimized maturation parameters based on the distribution of phenanthrene series compounds are proposed and their relationships to EasyRo% (x) are established: log(MPs/P) = 0.19x + 0.08 (0.9% < EasyRo% < 2.1%); log(MPs/P) = 0.64x − 0.86 (2.1% < EasyRo% < 3.4%); log(DMPs/TMPs) = 0.71x − 0.55 (0.9% < EasyRo% < 3.4%); log(MTR) = 0.84x − 0.75 (0.9% < EasyRo% < 3.4%). These significant positive correlations are strong argument for using log(MPs/P), log(DMPs/TMPs) and log(MTR) as maturity parameters, especially for mature to over-mature source rocks

Introduction: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease brought on by various bacteria, and effective antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and alveolar bone regeneration are the main goals of treating periodontal disease. Methods: In the current work, we employed Icariin (ICA) into a hydrogel modified with carbon nanofiber (CNF) to create a multifunctional composite nanoplatform. The composite was activated in the near infrared (NIR) to treat periodontitis. Results: The antibacterial results showed that the ICA+CNF@H showed 94.2% and 91.7% clearance of S. aureus and E. coli, respectively, under NIR irradiation. In vitro experiments showed that NIR-irradiated composites suppressed inflammatory factor (IL-6) and ROS expression and up-regulated the performance of anti-inflammatory factor (IL-10) in RAW264.7 cells. At the same time, the composites promoted the production of osteogenic factors in BMSCs, with an approximately 3-fold increase in alkaline phosphatase activity after 7 days and an approximately 2-fold increase in the rate of extracellular matrix mineralization after 21 days. In vivo tests showed that the alveolar bone height was clearly greater in the ICA+CNF@H (NIR) group compared to the periodontitis group.Discussion: In conclusion, ICA+CNF@H under NIR irradiation achieved a synergistic effect of antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, reduction of reactive oxygen species and promotion of osteogenesis, offering a novel approach for treating periodontitis
