Background Subtraction with Real-time Semantic Segmentation
Accurate and fast foreground object extraction is very important for object
tracking and recognition in video surveillance. Although many background
subtraction (BGS) methods have been proposed in the recent past, it is still
regarded as a tough problem due to the variety of challenging situations that
occur in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we explore this problem from a
new perspective and propose a novel background subtraction framework with
real-time semantic segmentation (RTSS). Our proposed framework consists of two
components, a traditional BGS segmenter and a real-time semantic
segmenter . The BGS segmenter aims to construct
background models and segments foreground objects. The real-time semantic
segmenter is used to refine the foreground segmentation outputs
as feedbacks for improving the model updating accuracy. and
work in parallel on two threads. For each input frame , the
BGS segmenter computes a preliminary foreground/background
(FG/BG) mask . At the same time, the real-time semantic segmenter
extracts the object-level semantics . Then, some specific
rules are applied on and to generate the final detection
. Finally, the refined FG/BG mask is fed back to update the
background model. Comprehensive experiments evaluated on the CDnet 2014 dataset
demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance
among all unsupervised background subtraction methods while operating at
real-time, and even performs better than some deep learning based supervised
algorithms. In addition, our proposed framework is very flexible and has the
potential for generalization
MixNet: Toward Accurate Detection of Challenging Scene Text in the Wild
Detecting small scene text instances in the wild is particularly challenging,
where the influence of irregular positions and nonideal lighting often leads to
detection errors. We present MixNet, a hybrid architecture that combines the
strengths of CNNs and Transformers, capable of accurately detecting small text
from challenging natural scenes, regardless of the orientations, styles, and
lighting conditions. MixNet incorporates two key modules: (1) the Feature
Shuffle Network (FSNet) to serve as the backbone and (2) the Central
Transformer Block (CTBlock) to exploit the 1D manifold constraint of the scene
text. We first introduce a novel feature shuffling strategy in FSNet to
facilitate the exchange of features across multiple scales, generating
high-resolution features superior to popular ResNet and HRNet. The FSNet
backbone has achieved significant improvements over many existing text
detection methods, including PAN, DB, and FAST. Then we design a complementary
CTBlock to leverage center line based features similar to the medial axis of
text regions and show that it can outperform contour-based approaches in
challenging cases when small scene texts appear closely. Extensive experimental
results show that MixNet, which mixes FSNet with CTBlock, achieves
state-of-the-art results on multiple scene text detection datasets
Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measured by optical coherence tomography in Chinese teenagers aged from 13 years old to 18 years old
AIM: To establish a reference range of retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)thickness by optical coherence tomography(OCT)in Chinese teenagers aged from 13 to 18 years old, and investigate its relationship with age, eye side, gender, and ethnic group.
METHODS: A total of 402 eyes from 201 normal Chinese aged from 13 to 18 years old were recruited for this study. Optic disk with 3.4mm diameter circle in different global average, quadrant and part-time bit retinal nerve fiber layer thickness(RNFLT)was measured by RNFL thickness average analysis program. Their RNFLT at different part-time bit, quadrant and global average RNFLT around the disc were measured by OCT with 3.4mm diameter circle, using the RNFL thickness average analysis program. The data was analyzed with SPSS statistical 19.0. The influences of several factors(such as age, eye side, gender, and ethnic group)on RNFLT were also analyzed.
RESULTS: The global average RNFLT at 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 years old was 108.32±9.42μm, 109.23±9.67μm, 110.36±11.14μm, 111.27±10.21μm, 109.23±9.67μm, 112.11±8.83μm respectively. RNFLT of right eyes was 109.82±8.93μm and of left eyes was 110.33±9.89μm. All of the male's average RNFLT was 110.14±10.02μm, and all of the female's average RNFLT was 109.96±11.22μm. The average RNFLT of Han nationality was 110.22±9.31μm and of non-Han nationality was 109.87±8.65μm. The average RNFLT of all was 110.02±9.87μm, the RNFLT at the superior, nasal, inferior and temporal quadrant was 146.56 ±18.88μm, 76.49±13.28μm, 136.64±16.29μm, 82.01±12.55μm respectively. There was no significant difference in gender, eye side, and ethnic group(all P<0.05), but the difference was significant compared with adult's data of the database.
CONCLUSION: This study has established a normal standard reference of RNFLT and its related indexes by OCT in Chinese teenagers aged 13-18 years old. Gender, age, eye side, and ethnic group have no effect on their RNFLT, which has significant difference with adult's data. And for the diagnosis and follow-up of diseases involving in RNFL changes, the adult's data can not be used

Sulfated tyrosines 27 and 29 in the N-terminus of human CXCR3 participate in binding native IP-10
Aim: Human CXCR3, a seven-transmembrane segment (7TMS), is predominantly expressed in Th1-mediated responses. Interferon-γ-inducible protein 10 (IP-10) is an important ligand for CXCR3. Their interaction is pivotal for leukocyte migration and activation. Tyrosine sulfation in 7TMS is a posttranslational modification that contributes substantially to ligand binding. We aimed to study the role of tyrosine sulfation of CXCR3 in the protein's binding to IP-10. Methods: Plasmids encoding CXCR3 and its mutants were prepared by PCR and site-directed mutagenesis. HEK 293T cells were transfected with plasmids encoding CXCR3 or its variants using calcium phosphate. Transfected cells were labeled with [35S]-cysteine and methionine or [35S]-Na2SO3 and then analyzed by immunoprecipitation to measure sulfation. Experiments with 125I-labeled IP-10 were carried out to evaluate the affinity of CXCR3 for its ligand. Calcium influx assays were used to measure intercellular signal transduction. Results: Our data show that sulfate moieties are added to tyrosines 27 and 29 of CXCR3. Mutation of these two tyrosines to phenylalanines substantially decreases binding of CXCR3 to IP-10 and appears to eliminate the associated signal transduction. Tyrosine sulfation of CXCR3 is enhanced by tyrosyl protein sulfotransferases (TPSTs), and it is weakened by shRNA constructs. The binding ability of CXCR3 to IP-10 is increased by TPSTs and decreased by shRNAs. Conclusions: This study identifies two sulfated tyrosines in the N-terminus of CXCR3 as part of the binding site for IP-10, and it underscores the fact that tyrosine sulfation in the N-termini of 7TMS receptors is functionally important for ligand interactions. Our study suggests a molecular target for inhibiting this ligand-receptor interaction
Revisiting the Association of Blood Pressure with Mortality in Oldest Old People in China: Community Based, Longitudinal Prospective Study
Objective To examine the associations of blood pressure with all cause mortality and cause specific mortality at three years among oldest old people in China. Design Community based, longitudinal prospective study. Setting 2011 and 2014 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, conducted in 22 Chinese provinces. Participants 4658 oldest old individuals (mean age 92.1 years). Main outcome measures All cause mortality and cause specific mortality assessed at three year follow-up. Results 1997 deaths were recorded at three year follow-up. U shaped associations of mortality with systolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, and pulse pressure were identified; values of 143.5 mm Hg, 101 mm Hg, and 66 mm Hg conferred the minimum mortality risk, respectively. After adjustment for covariates, the U shaped association remained only for systolic blood pressure (minimum mortality risk at 129 mm Hg). Compared with a systolic blood pressure value of 129 mm Hg, risk of all cause mortality decreased for values lower than 107 mm Hg (from 1.47 (95% confidence interval 1.01 to 2.17) to 1.08 (1.01 to 1.17)), and increased for values greater than 154 mm Hg (from 1.08 (1.01 to 1.17) to 1.27 (1.02 to 1.58)). In the cause specific analysis, compared with a middle range of systolic blood pressure (107-154 mm Hg), higher values (\u3e154 mm Hg) were associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular mortality (adjusted hazard ratio 1.51 (95% confidence interval 1.12 to 2.02)); lower values (Hg) were associated with a higher risk of non-cardiovascular mortality (1.58 (1.26 to 1.98)). The U shaped associations remained in sensitivity and subgroup analyses. Conclusions This study indicates a U shaped association between systolic blood pressure and all cause mortality at three years among oldest old people in China. This association could be explained by the finding that higher systolic blood pressure predicted a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and that lower systolic blood pressure predicted a higher risk of death from non-cardiovascular causes. These results emphasise the importance of revisiting blood pressure management or establishing specific guidelines for management among oldest old individuals
A data analysis method for isochronous mass spectrometry using two time-of-flight detectors at CSRe
The concept of isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) applying two
time-of-flight (TOF) detectors originated many years ago at GSI. However, the
corresponding method for data analysis has never been discussed in detail.
Recently, two TOF detectors have been installed at CSRe and the new working
mode of the ring is under test. In this paper, a data analysis method for this
mode is introduced and tested with a series of simulations. The results show
that the new IMS method can significantly improve mass resolving power via the
additional velocity information of stored ions. This improvement is especially
important for nuclides with Lorentz factor -value far away from the
transition point of the storage ring CSRe.Comment: published in Chinese Physics C Vol. 39, No. 10 (2015) 10620
