Nuclear modification of valence-quark distributions and its effects on NuTeV sin^2 theta_W anomaly

We investigated a nuclear modification difference between up- and down-valence quark distributions by analyzing structure function F_2 and Drell-Yan cross-section ratios. Although nuclear modifications of the valence-quark distributions themselves are rather well determined, it is difficult to find their difference from the present data. We estimated such an effect on the NuTeV sin^2 theta_W value and its uncertainty by the Hessian method. At this stage, it is not large enough to explain the whole NuTeV anomaly. However, the modification difference cannot be precisely determined, so that further studies are needed.Comment: 3 pages, LaTeX, 1 eps file, to be published in Proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Neutrino Factories and Superbeams (NuFact04

The behavior of bonded doubler splices for composite sandwich panels

    Get PDF
The results of an investigation into the behavior of adhesively bonded doubler splices of two composite material sandwich panels are presented. The splices are studied from three approaches: analytical; numerical (finite elements); and experimental. Several parameters that characterize the splice are developed to determine their influence upon joint strength. These parameters are: doubler overlap length; core stiffness; laminate bending stiffness; the size of the gap between the spliced sandwich panels; and room and elevated temperatures. Similarities and contrasts between these splices and the physically similar single and double lap joints are discussed. The results of this investigation suggest several possible approaches to improving the strength of the sandwich splices

Explaining Violation Traces with Finite State Natural Language Generation Models

An essential element of any verification technique is that of identifying and communicating to the user, system behaviour which leads to a deviation from the expected behaviour. Such behaviours are typically made available as long traces of system actions which would benefit from a natural language explanation of the trace and especially in the context of business logic level specifications. In this paper we present a natural language generation model which can be used to explain such traces. A key idea is that the explanation language is a CNL that is, formally speaking, regular language susceptible transformations that can be expressed with finite state machinery. At the same time it admits various forms of abstraction and simplification which contribute to the naturalness of explanations that are communicated to the user

NC pi0 Production in the MiniBooNE Antineutrino Data

    Get PDF
The single largest background to future numubar to nuebar (numu to nue) oscillation searches is neutral current pi0 production. MiniBooNE, which began taking antineutrino data in January 2006, has the world's largest sample of pi0's produced by antineutrinos in the 1 GeV energy range. These neutral pions are primarily produced through the delta resonance but can also be created through "coherent production." The latter process is the coherent sum of glancing scatters of (anti)neutrinos off a neutron or proton, in which the nucleus is kept intact but a pi0 is created. Current analysis of NC pi0 production in the MiniBooNE antineutrino data will be discussed.Comment: 4 pages, including 5 figures. Spectral functions for medium-sized nuclei

The spectral functions for calcium and argon are constructed. It is verified that their predictions for the quasielastic electron-nucleus cross sections in the energy range ~1 GeV agree with the data. The argon spectral function is then used to obtain the quasielastic neutrino-nucleus cross section.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, presented at 5th International Workshop on Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions in the Few-GeV Region (NuInt07), Fermilab, USA, 30.05-3.06.200

    Mechanising on-the-run grain sampling

    Get PDF
Capturing grain samples at harvest for later grain protein analysis creates logistical complications when spatial position and yield are to be monitored coincidently. The objective of the present study was to develop a sampling device that automatically captures grain during machine harvesting. The device consisted of an on-board GPS, a palm-top computer, a John Deere GreenStarTM moisture meter, and an interface box linking the components. The device has been tested on John Deere and Case harvesters. Grain samples of wheat, barley and sorghum crops were taken as frequently as every 25 m of travel. After protein analysis, the resultant protein map has been able to improve the interpretation of coincident yield maps for grain growers in eastern Australia. Additional qualitative information that influence grain price or which highlight yield-limiting factors, such as kernel weight, moisture, density or colour, may be also obtained from samples captured by the device

Charge Symmetry Violation Corrections to Determination of the Weinberg Angle in Neutrino Reactions

    Get PDF
We show that the correction to the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation associated with charge symmetry violation in the valence quark distributions is essentially model independent. It is proportional to a ratio of quark momenta that is independent of Q^2. This result provides a natural explanation of the surprisingly good agreement found between our earlier estimates within several different models. When applied to the recent NuTeV measurement, this effect significantly reduces the discrepancy with other determinations of the Weinberg angle.Comment: 7 pages, no figures; expanded discussion of N.ne.Z correction

Property-Based Testing - The ProTest Project

    Get PDF
The ProTest project is an FP7 STREP on property based testing. The purpose of the project is to develop software engineering approaches to improve reliability of service-oriented networks; support fault-finding and diagnosis based on specified properties of the system. And to do so we will build automated tools that will generate and run tests, monitor execution at run-time, and log events for analysis. The Erlang / Open Telecom Platform has been chosen as our initial implementation vehicle due to its robustness and reliability within the telecoms sector. It is noted for its success in the ATM telecoms switches by Ericsson, one of the project partners, as well as for multiple other uses such as in facebook, yahoo etc. In this paper we provide an overview of the project goals, as well as detailing initial progress in developing property based testing techniques and tools for the concurrent functional programming language Erlang

Electroweak radiative corrections to deep-inelastic neutrino scattering - implications for NuTeV ?

We calculate the O(alpha) electroweak corrections to charged- and neutral-current deep-inelastic neutrino scattering off an isoscalar target. The full one-loop-corrected cross sections, including hard photonic corrections, are evaluated and compared to an earlier result which was used in the NuTeV analysis. In particular, we compare results that differ in input-parameter scheme, treatment of real photon radiation and factorization scheme. The associated shifts in the theoretical prediction for the ratio of neutral- and charged-current cross sections can be larger than the experimental accuracy of the NuTeV result.Comment: 19 pages late
