Tearing Off the Masks: Narratives on Jewish Communists The paper presents an analysis of the contemporary Polish debate on Jewish communists. The analysis was performed in the framework of colonialist theories. I deconstructed narrations about Jewish communists, which belong in the Polish political mainstream, and are regarded as moderate, objective and devoid of any ideology. The tropes shared by the colonialist discourse and the debate on Jewish communists are: orientalisation, eroticisation, infantilisation, presenting the object of research outside the historical context, abolishing the context of social and political inequalities, and declaring the victims guilty of the violence they experience.   Zdzieranie masek. Killing symphathy: About Jodi Melamed’s Represent and destroy: Rationalizing violence in a new racial capitalism This article discusses the book Represent and destroy: Rationalizing violence in a new racial capitalism by Jodi Melamed. The author of the book identifies and describes three different theories of race, all officially antiracist, which over the last seventy years successively enjoyed dominant status in the United States, meaning that they have been produced and reproduced by state institutions and initiatives. The three theories are racial liberalism, liberal multiculturalism and neoliberal multiculturalism. Jodi Melamed argues that their purpose was, first and foremost, to legitimize the capitalist exploitation of colored people, both locally and globally. As Melamed examines the critical attitudes to the dominant approach to race in the USA, and how their polemical potential has been contained, she demonstrates how post-war antiracist ideologies have limited the understanding of racism and provided the foundations for and normalized new forms of racialized violence.   Zabójcza sympatia: O książce Jodi Melamed Represent and destroy: Rationalizing violence in a new racial capitalism Artykuł stanowi omówienie książki Jodi Melamed Represent and destroy: Rationalizing violence in a new racial capitalism. W książce tej autorka wyodrębnia i opisuje trzy kolejne ideologie związane z rasą – wszystkie oficjalnie antyrasistowskie – które na przestrzeni ostatnich 70 lat miały w Stanach Zjednoczonych status dominujących, to znaczy były wytwarzane i reprodukowane przez instytucje i inicjatywy państwowe: rasowy liberalizm, liberalny multikulturalizm i neoliberalny multikulturalizm. Jodi Melamed dowodzi, że ideologie te służyły przede wszystkim legitymizacji kapitalistycznego wyzysku osób kolorowych, zarówno w skali lokalnej, jak i globalnej. Śledząc dzieje narracji krytycznych wobec dominującego rozumienia rasy w USA oraz sposoby wygaszania ich polemicznego potencjału, Melamed pokazuje, jak powojenne ideologie antyrasistowskie nie tylko ograniczyły rozumienie rasizmu, ale ufundowały i znormalizowały nowe formy urasowionej przemocy

Simple model of the density of states in 1D photonic crystal

In this paper, we present a simple, yet versatile, analytical model of one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D PC). In our theoretical model, we take into account direction of propagation and therefore do not neglect anisotropic nature of photonic crystals. We derive analytical expressions for mode spectrum and density of states in 1D photonic crystal. With those formulas, we obtain mode spectrum characteristics, which depict formation of photonic band gap and reveal properties of photonic crystals.Comment: presented at SPIE International Congress on Optics and Optoelectronics, Warszawa, Poland, 28.08-2.09.200

Consumer perceptions of peanuts and peanut allergy : the EuroPrevall results of focus groups in Poland

Background: Food allergies represent a growing public health concern worldwide. For many people, peanut is a considered one of the basic foods, while for food industry, groundnuts are the cheapest substitute for other nuts. They are added to many goods. The aim of the study is to portray the “peanut culture” in Poland, by reporting perceptions of an ordinary consumer as regards peanuts, peanut products and peanut allergies. The study tries to explore the role of peanuts and peanut products in diet and life of Polish consumers, as well as their awareness about peanut allergy and restrictions on peanut consumption. Methods: Three focus groups sessions with consumers were carried out: C1 - 10 participants (part-time university students, recruited during their courses. It is important to note, however, that part-time studies in Poland are held during the weekends and consist primarily of people who work), C2 - 12 participants (participants were recruited through the advertisement in local/regional supermarkets) and C3 - 10 participants (a group of 12 people were recruited via regional newspaper (Dziennik Polski) in the vacancy announcement). The protocol was prepared as part of the EuroPrevall project, Work Package 2.3. All sessions lasted between 45 and 60 minutes. Each session was type-recorded and transcribed. Each transcript was coded using Atlas.ti (5.0) software for qualitative analysis. Results: The current paper focuses at themes related directly to peanut consumption habits and awareness/perception of peanut allergy, specifically: personal preferences for peanuts; types, forms and place of peanut consumption; tradition of peanut consumption and its change over years; health issues and awareness of peanut allergy; early exposure to peanuts. Consumers in Poland can be divided into those who like peanuts and eat them, those who do not like peanuts for various reasons (i.e. lack of habit to eat peanuts) and never eat them and those who eat peanuts occasionally, i.e. in pubs, bars, at parties, but do not usually buy them. The latter category involves most participants. Conclusion: The results described in this paper indicate that more information is needed as regards food and peanut allergy. Peanuts in hidden form require special attention and clearer labelling, which is important especially for children suffering from peanut allergy. Authorities need to publish guidelines as regards peanut consumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or at least doctors should inform patients about the risk of developing peanut allergy as a result of early exposure

She claimed i.a.: ”Since we are deliberating, placed in a ho-mophobic culture, where questioning someone’s heterosexual orientation is not an observation but a de­lation, I would compare Zośka and Rudy to Achilles and Patroclus, a pair of legendary warriors. […] I think that this is one of the most beautiful texts about love knowing no limits, whereas all we know about the main characters’ relations testifies to the unheard power and depth of this feeling”. Those words caused an avalanche of reactions, starting from polemics with Janicka or libels on her to violence threats against the scholar. In this conversation, Bożena Keff, Magda Szcześniak, Tomasz Tomasik, Błażej Warkocki and Anna Zawadzka are discussing Janicka’s proposition (developed in her book Festung Warschau, published prior to the quoted text) to interpret Stones on the barricades as a text also on a romantic relationship between two men. They analyse social and political causes of the “scandal”, induced by the Polish mainstream media together with a part of the Polish academic milieu. Pijąc wódkę z antysemitami. Case study „relacji polsko-żydowskich” współcześnie

Drinking vodka with anti-Semites. A case study of ‘Polish-Jewish relations’ today This text analyzes the events that occurred between December 31, 2016 and January 6, 2017, namely the ‘scandal’ at the Café Foksal pub in Warsaw and its ramifications, as well as the simultaneous attacks on the Prince Kebab shop in Ełk. Both events were local or, many would venture to say, marginal. It is not my intention to attribute great importance to them. I rather treat them as meaningful case studies which exemplify how anti-Semitism operates in Polish culture at present and, probably more importantly, the roadblock encountered when problematizing anti-Semitism. These allegedly insignificant events from the turn of 2016–2017 are an excellent illustration of the conditions that Jews and other individuals perceived to be non-Polish have to accept in order to ensure relative safety to themselves. I discuss these events as a certain spectacle, whose actors played either the roles they chose or the only roles available to them (perpetrator, victim, bystander, and mediator). I also suggest viewing these events from the point of view of certain elements of Polish history.   Pijąc wódkę z antysemitami. Zdarzeń o charakterze lokalnym, a wielu powiedziałoby także: marginalnym. Moim celem nie jest przypisywanie im wielkiego znaczenia. Traktuję je natomiast jako symptomatyczne case study, na przykładzie którego widać funkcjonowanie antysemityzmu w polskiej kulturze dzisiaj i – co może bardziej istotne – blokady, na jakie napotyka jego problematyzowanie. Te pozornie nieistotne zdarzenia z przełomu 2016–2017 znakomicie pokazują, na jakie warunki muszą przystać Żydzi i inne jednostki postrzegane jako nie-polskie, by zapewnić sobie względne bezpieczeństwo. Omawiam te zdarzenia jako swoisty spektakl, podczas którego określone podmioty wchodziły w wybrane lub w jedyne dostępne im role (sprawcy, ofiary, świadka, rozjemcy). The body and the stigma. Defloration as an act of building femininity  The paper offers an analysis of the cultural meanings of the bodily attributes and practices related to virginity and defloration; the most important are “bloodstains” (a sign of the loss of virginity) and “penetration” (regarded as the only “true” form of sexual intercourse). The obligation to present the defloration and the shame that accompanies it are the vantage point to the analysis of the forms of stigmatizing femininity. A deconstruction of the meanings acquired by penetration led me to a conclusion that the cause-effect relation between gender and culturally defined sexual practices (including sexual orientation) is not only inseparable, but also different than it has usually been thought. It is not the gender that determines an individual’s sexuality, but the culturally imposed sexual practices build the gender.   Ciało i piętno. Defloracja jako wytwarzanie kobiecości Artykuł poświęcony jest kulturowym znaczeniom cielesnych atrybutów i praktyk związanych z dziewictwem i defloracją. Szczególne miejsce wśród nich zajmuje plama krwi jako znak obwieszczający utratę dziewictwa oraz penetracja powszechnie uważana za jedyny „prawdziwy” seks. Przymus uwidocznienia defloracji oraz wstyd z tym związany traktuję jako punkt wyjścia do rozważań na temat piętnowania kobiecości. Wojna polsko-polska na terenie Izraela

The Polish – Polish war on the territory of IsraelThe text deconstructs a documentary film Betar by Robert Kaczmarek and Piotr Gontarczyk. The author carries out the analysis adopting two approaches. Firstly, she confronts the factographic side of the film against other sources reporting the events presented in the film. The author also proves that although it has pretensions to being a historiographic work, Betar is, in fact, constructed on the founding myths of the Israeli Zionism. Secondly, she analyses the film as the authors’ viewpoint on Polish fascism and Polish anti-Semitism concealed under the guise of objectifying narrative of a documentary. Seen from such a perspective, Betar perfectly fits into the Polish historical politics. Discussing the issue of Jews in Poland in the pre-war and war times, the film disregards the context of dominance and abuse, that is the majority-minority context; and what is more, it neutralises the Polish anti-Semitism presenting it as equal to the right-wing Zionism as well as an answer to Jewish nationalism
