Prosthetic Rehabilitation of a Patient with Limited Mouth Opening following Partial Maxillectomy and Lateral Rhinotomy for Sinonasal Adenocarcinoma: A Clinical Report

    Get PDF
Adenocarcinomas of various types comprise 10 to 20% of all primary malignant neoplasms of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. They are thought to originate from seromucous glands of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses as well as the surface epithelium. Long-term prognosis is poor and patients usually die due to local spread with no metastasis. This clinical report describes a method for prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with sinonasal adenocarcinoma of maxilla following partial maxillectomy and lateral rhinotomy.&nbsp

Purpose: The purpose of study was to examine the effect of upper and lower incisor retraction on reduction of the profile and to record any correlation between dental and soft tissue parameters. Materials and methods: The study was a retrospective cephalometric study. A homogenized sample of 10 adult femaleorthodontic patients was selected from the local population. All patients were treated at a private practice using Pre Adjusted 0.022" slot edgewise appliance. Pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalograms were taken in natural head position with lips in relaxed position. Each lateral cephalogram was traced and a reference line was established (a constructed line perpendicular to Sella-Nasion minus 7° through Sella). Linear measurements were made with a from A’ point, upper incisor tip, mandibular incisor tip, most anterior point of upper lip, most anterior point of lower lip and B’ point. The angular measurements were the nasolabial angle, labiomental angle. Upper and lower lip thickness and interlabial gap parallel to the reference line were also measured. Results: All linear and angular measurements showed statistically significant (p < 0.05) changes except for changes in upper lip thickness, lower lip thickness, lower vermillion, B’ pointand lower lip anterior. The Pearson’s correlation test showed a significant positive correlation between upper incisor retraction and upper lip position statistically significant decrease in the interlabial gap by 3.4 ± 2.5 mm (p < 0.001). Conclusion: On the basis of the results obtained from this study, it can be concluded that extraction of the four first premolars followed by the retraction of anteriors can be successful in reducing dental and soft tissue procumbency in adult females with bimaxillary protrusion in the local population&nbsp

Correlation between Vertical Dimension of Occlusion and Finger Length in Kashmiri Population

Introduction: Measurement of accurate vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) is of prime importance to the dentist especially a prosthodontist. Though many methods have been proposed in recording VDO in the past but none of them fulfills the criteria of accuracy, reproducibility and ease. This study employs theuse of length of fingers to measure VDO in Kashmiri population. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 60 dentulous subjects which include 30 males and 30 females in the age range of 18 to 25 years. Measurement of VDO and length of fingers was recorded using a digital vernier caliper. Correlation between VDO and length of fingers was studied using Spearman’s coefficient. Result: Vertical dimension of occlusion was found to be almost the length of index finger in males and little finger in females in Kashmiri population. Conclusion: The study revealed that length of index finger is almost equal to VDO in males and length of little finger is almost equal to VDO in females.&nbsp

The Selection of Maxillary Anterior Teeth Width in Kashmiri Population

Introduction: Determining the width of maxillary anterior teeth is a difficult aspect in complete denture fabrication. The width of maxillary anterior teeth is determined by taking various anatomical landmarks on the face as a guide, such as the interpupillary, interalar, intercommissure and interzygomatic distance, etc. The present clinical study was carried out to evaluate the relationships between maxillary anterior teeth measurements (canine to canine and central incisor width) and various horizontal facial parameters. Materials and methods: The facial and dental measurements were obtained directly from 60 Kashmiri  undergraduate dental students by using vernier calliper and dental floss. Result: Correlation analysis was done using Pearson’s correlation analysis and it was determined that the incisor width and canine to canine distance show positive correlation with some of the facial measurements. Conclusion: This study inferred that while most of the measurements showed a positive correlation with the incisor width and canine width in the different face forms none of them were found to be significant.&nbsp
