Detection of human papillomavirus DNA sequences in oral lesions using polymerase chain reaction
The purpose of the present study was to estimate the frequency of HPV DNA in four groups of oral lesions, including oral squamous cell carcinoma. Sixty paraffin-embedded oral tissue samples were examined for the presence of HPV DNAs using the PCR technique. These specimens were obtained from patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), leukoplakia, oral lichen planus (OLP), and pyogenic granuloma (PG). Consensus primers for L1 region (MY09 and MY11) and specific primers were used for detection of HPV DNA sequences in this study. we detected HPV DNA in 60% (9 out of 15) of OSCCs, 26.7% (4 out of 15) of leukoplakia, 13.3% (2 out of 15) of OLPs, and 6.7% (1 out of 15) of PGs. Statistical analysis showed that the prevalence of HPV in OSCC was significantly higher than other groups (P < 0.05). The frequency of HPV-16 and 18 detection in OSCC samples were 40% and 20%, respectively. The prevalence of these high risk HPVs was significantly higher in OSCC group (P < 0.05). The results of the present study show a successive increase of detection rate of HPV-16 and 18 DNAs from low level in samples of pyogenic granuloma and non-premalignant or questionably premalignant lesions of OLP to premalignant leukoplakia and to OSCC. © 2007 Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The effect of surgical preference card on the clinical self-efficacy of operating room students
Background & Aim: A wide range of clinical education of operating room students is done in the operating room. One of the problems in students' clinical education is the lack of appropriate learning tools in the operating room. The use of educational tools that improve students' performance affects students' self-efficacy in the operating room. So, the purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the surgical preference card as an educational aid tool on the self-efficacy of the operating room students. Methods & Materials: This quasi-experimental study was carried out on 64 operating room students of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences at AL-Zahra Hospital in the year 2018. Participates were selected through convenience sampling and were divided into experimental (n=32) and control (n=32) groups. The students in the intervention group performed surgical care with using the surgical preference card. The data collection tool was a clinical self-efficacy questionnaire. Data were analyzed with SPSS-21 software using the independent-t, paired t-test, and chi-square test. Results: The findings of this study showed that there was no significant difference between the average self-efficacy score of the control group before and after the intervention (p>0.05). while the average self-efficacy score of the experimental group increased significantly after the intervention as compared with before the intervention (p <0.001). Conclusion: The surgical preference card as an educational aid tool improved the students' self-efficacy. Therefore, it is recommended to use this tool for the clinical education of other operating room students. © 2020, Tehran University of Medical Sciences. All rights reserved
Effect of vitamins A, E, C and omega-3 fatty acids supplementation on the level of catalase and superoxide dismutase activities in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats
Background: Since free radicals and antioxidant enzymes may play an important role in the development of diabetes, the present study was designed to assess the effect of supplementation with vitamins A, E and C and -3 fatty acids on catalase and superoxide dismutase activity in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Methods: A total of 64 male Wistar rats weighing 250 g were divided into four groups as normal control, diabetic control, diabetic supplemented with vitamin A, E and C and diabetic supplemented with -3 fatty acids. After four weeks the rats were anesthetized and catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were investigated in blood samples, liver and heart homogenates. Results: In diabetic rats, the activity levels of heart SOD (p < 0.001) and heart and liver CAT (p < 0.001) were significantly lower than in normal control rats. Supplementation with vitamins A, E and C significantly increased heart CAT (p = 0.05). No significant change was observed in diabetic rats supplemented with -3 fatty acids. Conclusion: Supplementation with vitamins A, E and C and -3 fatty acids was found to increase heart CAT activity in diabetic rats and they can be valuable candidates in the treatment of the complications of diabetes
Holographic dark energy with time varying parameter
We consider the holographic dark energy model in which the model parameter
evolves slowly with time. First we calculate the evolution of EoS
parameter as well as the deceleration parameter in this generalized version of
holographic dark energy (GHDE). Depending on the parameter , the phantom
regime can be achieved earlier or later compare with original version of
holographic dark energy. The evolution of energy density of GHDE model is
investigated in terms of parameter . We also show that the time-dependency
of can effect on the transition epoch from decelerated phase to
accelerated expansion. Finally, we perform the statefinder diagnostic for GHDE
model and show that the evolutionary trajectories of the model in plane
are strongly depend on the parameter .Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Astrophys Space Sc
Aharonov-Casher effect for spin one particles in a noncommutative space
In this work the Aharonov-Casher (AC) phase is calculated for spin one
particles in a noncommutative space. The AC phase has previously been
calculated from the Dirac equation in a noncommutative space using a gauge-like
technique [17]. In the spin-one, we use kemmer equation to calculate the phase
in a similar manner. It is shown that the holonomy receives non-trivial
kinematical corrections. By comparing the new result with the already known
spin 1/2 case, one may conjecture a generalized formula for the corrections to
holonomy for higher spins.Comment: 9 page
Umbelliprenin-coated Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles: Antiproliferation evaluation on human Fibrosarcoma cell line (HT-1080)
The potential applications of Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) in nanomedicine as drug delivery systems
are well known. In this study we prepared umbelliprenin-coated Fe3O4 MNPs and evaluated the
antiproliferative effect of combination in vitro. After synthesis of Fe3O4 MNPs, particles were characterized
by transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy
techniques. The natural candidate compound — umbelliprenin— was isolated and identified and
umbelliprenin-coated Fe3O4 MNPs were prepared, using precipitation method. The surface chemistry of
umbelliprenin-coated Fe3O4 MNPs as well as their thermal decomposition characteristics was examined using
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric Analyzer equipment, respectively. HT-1080
cells were cultured until the logarithmic phase of growth, and MTT assay was successfully carried out to
evaluate the possible cytotoxic effects of umbelliprenin-coated Fe3O4 MNPs in viable cells in vitro. The
results demonstrated that umbelliprenin has moderate antiproliferative effects with IC50 value of 50 μg/mL.
However, the combination of umbelliprenin and Fe3O4 MNPs showed the IC50 value of 9 μg/mL. In other
words, cell proliferation decreased to the remarkably-low proportion of 45% after treating cells with
umbelliprenin-coated Fe3O4 MNPs. This suggests that with the aid of nanoparticles as carriers, natural
products may have even broader range of medical applications in future
The effect of multiple deformations on the formation of ultrafine grained steels
A C-Mn-Nb-Ti steel was deformed by hot torsion to study ultrafine ferrite formation through dynamic strain-induced transformation (DSIT) in conjunction with air cooling. A systematic study was carried out first to evaluate the effect of deformation temperature and prior austenite grain size on the critical strain for ultrafine ferrite formation (ε C,UFF) through single-pass deformation. Then, multiple deformations in the nonrecrystallization region were used to study the effect of thermomechanical parameters (i.e., strain, deformation temperature, etc.) on ε C,UFF. The multiple deformations in the nonrecrystallization region significantly reduced ε C,UFF, although the total equivalent strain for a given thermomechanical condition was higher than that required in single-pass deformation. The current study on a Ni-30Fe austenitic model alloy revealed that laminar microband structures were the key intragranular defects in the austenite for nucleation of ferrite during the hot torsion test. The microbands were refined and overall misorientation angle distribution increased with a decrease in the deformation temperature for a given thermomechanical processing condition. For nonisothermal multipass deformation, there was some contribution to the formation of high-angle microband boundaries from strains at higher temperature, although the strains were not completely additive.<br /
Renal Trauma Management in 8 Cities of Iran
This prospective study, conducted in 8 cities of Iran from 1999 to 2000. Out of total 16,573 trauma patients, 106 (0.63%) included in this study had renal injury. This study aimed at investigation of incidence, etiology and management of renal trauma patients in Iran. They were 87 (82.1%) male and 19 (17.9%) female patients. Renal trauma mechanism was mainly blunt injury (93.4%). Road traffic crashes (61.3%) and falls (22.7%) were the most leading causes of trauma. These patients had different grade of traumas as follow: Sixty-six (62.3%) grade I, 14 (13.2%) grade II, 10 (9.4%) grade III, 8 (7.5%) grade IV and 8 (7.5%) grade V. Out of 106 patients, eighty-three (78.3%) patients managed conservatively, most had grade I injury (P<0.0001). Twenty-three (21.7%) patients underwent different kinds of operation including: 5 (4.7%) nephrorrhaphy; 6 (5.7%) partial nephrectomy, and 12 (11.8%) total nephrectomy. More invasive intervention was needed in patients with higher grades of trauma as all with grade V injury underwent total nephrectomy (P<0.0001). Six patients (5.66%) passed away, three due to severe renal injury and hemorrhage, and three because of reasons unrelated to renal trauma. We concluded that most renal traumas are blunt injury and low grade with stable hemodynamic state which can be managed successfully non-operatively. Long Silver Nanowires Synthesis by Pulsed Electrodeposition
Silver nanowires were pulse electrodeposited into nanopore anodic alumina
oxide templates. The effects of continuous and pulse electrodeposition
waveform on the microstructure properties of the nanowire arrays were
studied. It is seen that the microstructure of nanowire is depend to pulse
condition. The off time duration of pulse waveform enables to control the
growth direction of Ag nanowires
Epidemiology of outpatient burns in Tehran: An analysis of 4813 cases
This study aims to demonstrate the epidemiologic characteristics of outpatient burn injuries in Tehran. This cross-sectional study was performed over a 1-year period in a referral burn centre in Tehran and included all outpatient burns. The required data were recorded by two trained physicians. Of the 4813 studied patients, including 293 infants, 2901 patients (60) were male (P < 0.001). The mean age of the adult patients was 31.3 ± 18.3 years, while for infants it was 10.68 ± 2.27 months. In all age groups and both genders, scalding was the most common aetiology. Majority of the burns were non-intentianal (n = 4808) and 70.5 of the injuries occurred at home. Housewives consisted of 24 of the burn patients. With respect to the site of burn, multiple injuries were the most frequent (53) followed by upper extremities (37). Most of the burns (96) were partial thickness. Significant association was present between the aetiology and depth of burn (P < 0.001). The mean affected total body surface area (TBSA) was 3.16 ± 2.92 and there was significant association between burnt TBSA and the mechanism of injury (P < 0.001). In conclusion, it seems that women aged 21-30 years and children younger than 10 years are at greater risk of these injuries and therefore should be the target for preventive strategies. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd and ISBI
