Localized Ridge Wrinkling of Stiff Films on Compliant Substrates
Wrinkling of thin stiff films on thick compliant elastomeric substrates subject to plane strain compression is considered for cases in which the substrate is pre-stretched prior to film attachment. Advanced wrinkling modes are investigated that evolve as the systems are compressed beyond the onset of the primary sinusoidal wrinkling mode. If the substrate pre-stretch is greater than about 40%, an advanced mode in the form of a series of well-spaced ridges separated by relatively flat film is observed in the simulations. Our experiments reveal a localization mode in the form of alternating packets of large and small amplitude wrinkles, but not ridges, while ridge formation has been observed in other recent experiments. Measurements of undulation amplitudes have been made for wrinkle fields of stiff films formed by oxidation of the surface of pre-stretched PDMS substrates. Simulations have been performed with a finite element model and an analytical film/substrate model. The formation of the ridge mode is a consequence of the altered nonlinearity of the substrate produced by the pre-stretch. The role of the tangential substrate stiffness in suppressing localization at the ridges is also highlighted. If there is no substrate pre-stretch, or if the substrate is pre-compressed, the primary sinusoidal mode gives way to an entirely different sequence of advanced modes usually entailing period doubling followed by folding. The nature of substrate nonlinearity that leads to ridges or folds is discussed.Engineering and Applied Science
Stretchable and High-Performance Supercapacitors with Crumpled Graphene Papers
Fabrication of unconventional energy storage devices with high stretchability and performance is challenging, but critical to practical operations of fully power-independent stretchable electronics. While supercapacitors represent a promising candidate for unconventional energy-storage devices, existing stretchable supercapacitors are limited by their low stretchability, complicated fabrication process, and high cost. Here, we report a simple and low-cost method to fabricate extremely stretchable and high-performance electrodes for supercapacitors based on new crumpled-graphene papers. Electrolyte-mediated-graphene paper bonded on a compliant substrate can be crumpled into self-organized patterns by harnessing mechanical instabilities in the graphene paper. As the substrate is stretched, the crumpled patterns unfold, maintaining high reliability of the graphene paper under multiple cycles of large deformation. Supercapacitor electrodes based on the crumpled graphene papers exhibit a unique combination of high stretchability (e.g., linear strain ~300%, areal strain ~800%), high electrochemical performance (e.g., specific capacitance ~196 F g[superscript −1]), and high reliability (e.g., over 1000 stretch/relax cycles). An all-solid-state supercapacitor capable of large deformation is further fabricated to demonstrate practical applications of the crumpled-graphene-paper electrodes. Our method and design open a wide range of opportunities for manufacturing future energy-storage devices with desired deformability together with high performance.United States. The association of depression status with menopause symptoms among rural midlife women in China
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the association of depression with menopausal status and some menopause symptoms (vasomotor symptoms and poor sleep).Methods: A total of 743 participants aged 40-60 years were recruited. Depression status was evaluated by using Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Sleep quality and vasomotor symptoms were evaluated by specific symptoms questionnaire.Results: The prevalence of depression among participants was 11.4%. Depression was found more likely to occur in participants with poor sleep (OR, 6.02; 95%CI, 3.61, 10.03) or with vasomotor symptoms (VMS) (OR, 2.03; 95%CI, 1.20, 3.44) after controlling for age, education level, marital status, menopause status, monthly family income and chronic diseases. Menopause status was not associated with depression. Stratification analysis showed a significant association between poor sleep and depression across different menopause stages, while VMS were associated with depression only in premenopausal status.Conclusion: The majority of Chinese rural midlife women do not experience depression. The relationship between depression, VMS and sleep disturbances tends to change with menopausal status in Chinese rural midlife women.Keywords: depression, poor sleep, vasomotor symptoms, menopause, rural wome
Experimental observation of Dirac-like surface states and topological phase transition in PbSnTe(111) films
The surface of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) carries an even
number of Dirac cones protected by crystalline symmetry. We epitaxially grew
high quality PbSnTe(111) films and investigated the TCI phase by
in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. PbSnTe(111)
films undergo a topological phase transition from trivial insulator to TCI via
increasing the Sn/Pb ratio, accompanied by a crossover from n-type to p-type
doping. In addition, a hybridization gap is opened in the surface states when
the thickness of film is reduced to the two-dimensional limit. The work
demonstrates an approach to manipulating the topological properties of TCI,
which is of importance for future fundamental research and applications based
on TCI
