Islam or progress of the nation?: an assessment of the aurat issue in Malay newspapers and magazines in the 1930s
Western media often perceive Islam as a misogynistic religion which hampers the progress of a nation. One related
issue is “aurat” which is considered as a means to denigrate women in the society. In pre-Independent Malaya
debates raged around the contested perceptions and interpretations of aurat in its relation to Malay modernisation
and the urgency of achieving ‘progress’ for Malays on par with other communities in the country. Articles were
published in Malayan newspapers and magazines debating the need to enhance awareness about the progress of the
Malay nation. This study assessed the differing interpretations of the principle of aurat among Muslims in 1930s
Malaya. The information scrutinised was derived from polemics published in Malay newspapers and magazines
circulated in Malaya in the 1930s. The findings revealed that people were torn between modernization and
traditionalism, viewing them as a choice between westernization and Islam. The establishment of secular education
and social mixing with the non-Muslim community exposed the Malays to new norms and values. In this transitional
period, social norms and values transformed according to the surroundings. The materials demonstrated how the
Malay Muslims responded to the call of development and the extent to which they were ready to embrace
modernization, which some viewed as a detachment from prestine Islamic teachings, especially regarding the issue
of aurat
Aplikasi Prinsip Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Dalam Kes Hadanah
This article discusses about the principle of the welfare of the children or thebest interest of the children in determining custody decisions under Islamicjurisdictions. Although the qualifications of the conflicting parties are amatter of great importance, the welfare of the children is the paramountconsideration with the aims protecting the childrens’ interests. Thequalifications' aspects or other matters are examined only insofar as theyrelate to their welfare. The discussions also evolve regarding irresponsibleand neglectful actions committed by the parents denying the rights andwelfare of their own childre
The Portrayal Of Masculinity/ Feminity Between Malaysian And Australian University Websites
This paper analyzed web features which were applicable to a cultural dimension namely
masculinity/feminity which contributed to cultural understanding and assisted web
designers in customizing the websites to a specific culture. Quantitative content analysis
was utilized through a t-test and discriminant analysis. 60 samples of websites were
selected from Malaysian and Australian universities. Predictor variables were “Use a
fluid layout”, “Pop-ups”, “Homepage length”, “Use site map”, “Use simple background
image”, “Use of flash” and “Highlight critical data”.The findings yielded that there was
a relationship between the masculinity/feminity cultural dimension and features of
website usability of different countries. Malaysian university websites tend to have
lower masculinity index. The results of Discriminant analysis also confirmed that
Malaysian university websites and Australian university websites differed significantly
on a linear combination of seven variables of masculinity/feminity. Hence, the
masculinity/feminity dimension is a factor to consider in ensuring the usability of
websites of different countries. This research also suggests that localisation is still
important in terms of university web marketing. Hence, the web is not a culturally
neutral medium, but they reflect the cultural environment that surrounds the developers.
This study is beneficial for web policy makers and web designers of universities in
providing a guide in terms of integrating cultural values for specific cultures. Future
research should examine other cultural dimension in universities of other countries to
gain more insights into the relationship of culture and university web usabilit
A novel approach of hybrid guideline based on senior citizen online form design / Zanariah Idrus...[et al.]
The research focuses on the problems faced by the senior citizens during form filling process on web application services . By year 2020, The World Health Organization predicts the senior citizens population is more than 1 billion . They are progressively exposed to technology and to understand their requirements is significant in human interface design. Unfortunately , the online form interface design tends to ignore the issue of ease of use especially for senior citizens aged 55 and above. A well known Delivering Inclusive Access to Disabled and Elderly Members (DIADEM) guideline outlines the recommended online form design for the senior citizens. Recently, DIADEM guidelines were implemented in Europe and the results suggest that it is important as a reference for senior citizens ' online form design . But it is specifically tailored for senior citizens with age 65 and above only . WeFDeC guideline aligns the online form design based on the Three Layer Model (Perceptual , Conversational and Relationship layers). Though it is an acceptable guideline for online form but it does not take sen ior citizens into consideration . Therefore , this study will compare , identify the weakness and create a new hybrid model of DIADEM and WeFDeC guidelines. A new model (Elder-WeFDe) which should fit with senior citizens online forms applications and the Malaysian e-government online forms will be introduced . The methodology follows five phases ; identify the research problems, identify and compare the two guidelines, produce a new permutation model and test the model to the Malaysian e-government forms. A form from the current 1169 online forms in Malaysia e-government portal will be selected and tested to a randomly selected group of senior citizens aged 55 and above from Malaysia northern region .The expected outcome is a new hybrid model (Elder-WeFDe) to guide web or online form designers to design a better and ease of use on line forms applications for the senior citizens and all age of group
Medical tourism: miracle or mirage?
Purpose – Medical tourism is a recent phenomenon that has generated much interest due to its huge economic potential. In the ASEAN region, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore have the government machinery involved in expediting the growth of the industry. The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of medical tourism on the healthcare delivery system of Malaysia as a destination country, with comparison made to Singapore and Thailand.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on a review of literature on medical tourism and secondary data obtained from government official documents. The literature is analyzed to draw out substantive issues affecting destination countries arising from the rapid growth of medical tourism.
Findings – The authors argue that while patient inflow and revenue has been on the uptrend in Malaysia, the manifestation of rapid growth of the industry needs further evaluation. Malaysia still lags behind Thailand and Singapore in capitalising on the full economic potential of the industry. At the same time immediate impact such as internal brain drain has been observed. Policy framework needs reevaluation in order to assure benefits from the industry permeate all levels of society.
Originality/value – This paper looks beyond marketing and motivation of medical tourism, to its socio-economic impact on Malaysia as a destination country. Policy recommendations formulated adds value to the study.
Keywords – medical tourism, medical outsourcing, international medical travel, health tourism
Financial literacy and investment decisions in Malaysia and United Kingdom: a comparative analysis
In today’s advance and complex financial landscape, financial literacy (FL) is essential as it does not only influence
and impact upon financial decisions at the firm level but also a country’s wider financial wellbeing and socioeconomic
development . This study compares the FL levels of Malaysia and United Kingdom by utilising the
results of the survey from the questionnaire developed by the OECD and by examining demographic and socioeconomic
factors that influence the level of FL. The results show that, overall, the level of FL in both countries are
low and necessary measures should be taken by the government to increase awareness of financial related matters.
The literature findings also reveal that demographic, economic, social, and psychological factors are the main
determinants, that some common themes appear with respect to the consequences of FL on investment decisions,
demographic factors, methodology and program effectiveness, and that gaps exist in the literature of FL in
Malaysia with respect to types of investment and risk tolerance, measurement of financial literacy, methodology
and sources of knowledge. The study provides information that may assist in directing future research and in
formuling policies and guidelines for policy makers, administrators and educators in incorporating suitable FL
components in their training endeavours

Towards interface design for virtual database / Zanariah Idrus...[et al.]
Today, big data has become as one of the important contribution in database management. It led
to innovative ways of storing and organizing data which include structured and unstructured
data. The unstructured data such as in news, reports, chats and surveys are basically loaded
with heavy text data and numerous format. Thus, these data become challenging to be used for
diverse purpose and are not appropriate to be stored in database. However, virtual database
method has the capability to organize the unstructured data, and reconstruct into firm and
concrete data. This approach carry out two major processes in databases which are mining and
managing the data. However, the main problem is the insufficient support between people using
databases and the heap of data collection. This is due to unawareness of clustered data
organization as information is stored implicitly. Thus, this paper presents the conception of
clustered data using the interface design model. Alignment of features and connections between
the interface and knowledge composition allow users to access knowledge proficiently
