Empire Falls and How A Disillusioned Society of the Early 21st Century Resorts to Romantic Tendencies

This paper is principally aimed at analyzing the theme of Richard Russo’s Empire Falls in its relation with the socio-economic context of its publication in 2001, namely the economic recession that characterizes the earliest decade of the 21st century. The analysis will be based on historical approach’s assumption of the correlation between literary works and social context in which they are produced. Intrinsically, the novel is dissected into two levels. They are surface level (form) and deeper level (content). The results of the analysis are in the form of philosophical speculations of the novel, which are believed to follow the mood of the early 21st century, including 1) disillusionment to social mobility, 2) incredulity to human agency, and 3) romantic tendencies. This novel’s reaction to the decline of capitalism in the early 21st century seems to be similar to early romantic reaction to the rise of capitalism by returning to nature and resorting to external forces whether divine entity or otherwise.Keywords: 21st century novel; American economic recession; romanticism

A Scholar in Foreign Warfare: Characterizing Dislocation in For Whom the Bell Tolls

This paper is aimed at analyzing literary devices used to establish the sense of dislocation in Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls. The research study uses objective approach to literature using E.M. Forster’s analytical tool and nomenclature to novel that is formulated in Aspects of the Novel. As the results demonstrated, dislocation is established through: 1) juxtaposition of the character’s history and 2) Hispanicization of the main character’s identity. The character’s “history” emphasizes the contrast of the main character’s life prior to the narrated events. Contradictions are apparent in the main character’s internal dialectic between being a scholar and becoming a soldier. The second approach to dislocation is caused by linguistic and cultural barrier barrier between Anglophone and Hispanophone characters demonstrated through deliberate Hispanicization. Keywords: dislocation; novel; Ernest Hemingway; character analysis

Strategi guru akidah akhlak dalam membina kepribadian Siswa di MTS Mambaul Ulum Sumber Gempol Pagelaran Malang

مستخلص البحث حمل مدرّس تربية الإسلامية الطبعة الأهمية في عمليّة بنيان شخصية التلميذ كمثل مدرّس عقيدة الأخلاق الذي يدرس الأخلاق إلى التلميذ. لابدّ على مدرّس العقيدة أن يعطي ستراتيجيّة في شكل شخصيّة التلميذ الذي له شخصيّة جيّدة وسيرشد السلوك الجيّد إلى الله، علاقة بين الناس والبيئة. كلّما تطوّر الزمان، كثير من شخصيّة التلميذ نقصا. مطلوب على الإبتكار، روحيّ ودقّة ستراتيجية مدرّس عقيدة الأخلاق في بنيان سخصيّة التلميذ. ومن هناك، يعمل الباحث البحث بموضوع ستراتيجية المدرّس لدرس عقيدة الأخلاق في بنيان شخصيّة التلميذ في المدرسة الثانوية منبع العُلم سومبار غامبول، باغيلاران، مالانج. أغراض هذا البحث : 1) لمعرفة ستراتيجية مدرّس لدرس عقيدة الأخلاق في بنيان شخصية التلميذ في المدرسة الثانوية منبع العُلم سومبار غامبول، باغيلاران، مالانج. 2) لمعرفة عوامل معاون و عراقيل لبنيان شخصية التلميذ في المدرسة الثانوية منبع العُلم سومبار غامبول، باغيلاران، مالانج. 3) لمعرفة نتيجة بنيان شخصية التلميذ في المدرسة الثانوية منبع العُلم سومبار غامبول، باغيلاران، مالانج. ليبلغ هذا الأغراض، يستخدم الباحث البحث الوصفي، وطريقة جمع البيانات من: 1) مقابلة 2) ملاحظة 3) توثيق. وتحليل البيانات بـــــ : 1) تحليل مادام جمع البيانات وهو بتحليل الوصفي 2) منهج ضمانة البيانات باستخدم تجربة مرجع البيانات. نتيجة هذا البحث يدلّ على: 1) ستراتيجية مدرّس لدرس عقيدة الأخلاق في بنيان شخصية التلميذ في المدرسة الثانوية منبع العُلم سومبار غامبول، باغيلاران، مالانج بأسوة حسنة، تدريب و عقاب للتلميذ. 2) عواميل معاون وعراقيل بنيان شخصية التلميذ في المدرسة الثانوية منبع العُلم سومبار غامبول، باغيلاران، مالانج. عواميل معاون ( مدرّس محترف، ثم وجود نشاط للصلاة الضحى جماعة، يقرأ سورة يس، صلاة الظهر جماعة، درس كتاب الأصفر)، عوامل عراقيل (بيئة الأسرة والجمعية). 3) نتيجة بنيان شخصية التلميذ في المدرسة الثانوية منبع العُلم سومبار غامبول، باغيلاران، مالانج بوجود التغيير ودراية من كل مخالفة التي يفعل التلميذ ويكرّم إلى الآخر ABSTRACT Teacher of Islamic education holding an important role on the building process of student personality especially Akidah Akhlak’s teacher that is a lot of teaching about character building to the students. Akidah Akhlak’s teacher being able to give any strategy in forming of personality. The student which have a good personality will show a good attitude to Allah, relation to others and to environment. The improve of time makes a student personality dropped, needed a creativity, spirituality and accuracy strategy of Akidah Akhlak’s teacher on the building of student personality. And that’s how the researchers doing this research with the title “the strategy of akidah akhlak’s teacher to build a student personality in junior high school of Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol, Pagelaran, Malang”. The objectivity of this research are: (1) to know the strategy of Akidah Akhlak’s teacher to build a student personality in junior high school of Mambaul Ulim Sumbergempol, Pagelaran, Malang. (2) to know inhibitors and supporting factors in the building of student personality in junior high school of Mambaul Ulim Sumbergempol, Pagelaran, Malang. (3) to know the results of building a student personality in junior high school of Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol, Pagelaran, Malang. To achieve these objectives, this research using a qualitative research, and the data collecting technique is doing by: (1) interview (2) observation (3) documentation. And then, data analysis is doing by: (1) analysis for the collecting data is using descriptive analysis (2) the authenticity of the data is using the triangulation of data. The results of this research is: (1) The strategy of Akidah Akhlak’s teacher to build a student personality in junior high school of Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol, Pagelaran, Malang is giving a good example, familiarize and punishment to students. (2) The inhibitors and supporting factors in the building of student personality in junior high school of Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol, Pagelaran, Malang. The supporting factors (professional teacher, praying Dhuha together, reading surah yaasin, praying dhuhur together, yellow books lesson), the inhibitors factors ( family environment and society). (3) The results of building a student personality in junior high school of Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol, Pagelaran, Malang is the change and awareness of any violations that is doing by the students, and respect to each others. ABSTRAK Guru pendidikan agama Islam memegang peranan penting dalam proses pembinaan kepribadian siswa terutama guru akidah akhlak yang banyak mengajarkan akhlak kepada siswa. Guru akidah harus mampu memberikan berbagai strategi dalam membentuk kepribadian. Siswa yang memiliki kepribadian yang baik akan menunjukkan perilaku yang baik kepada Allah, hubungan kepada sesama dan kepada lingkungan. Semakin berkembangnya zaman semakin banyak kepribadian siswa yang merosot, dibutuhkan kreativitas, spritualitas dan ketepatan strategi guru akidah akhlak dalam membina kepribadian siswa. Dari situlah peneliti melakukan penelitian dengan judul strategi guru akidah akhlak dalam membina kepribadian siswa di MTs Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol Pagelaran Malang. Tujuan dalam penulisan skripsi ini adalah (1) Untuk mengetahui strategi guru akidah akhlak dalam membina kepribadian siswa di MTs Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol Pagelaran Malang. (2) Untuk mengetahui faktor pendukung dan penghambat pembinaan kepribadian siswa di MTs Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol Pagelaran Malang. (3) Untuk mengetahui hasil pembinaan kepribadian siswa di MTs Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol Pagelaran Malang. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kualitatif, teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui (1). Wawancara (2). Pengamatan (Observasi) dan (3). Dokumentasi. Selanjutnya analisa data dilakukan dengan: (1) Analisa selama pengumpulan data yakni menggunakan analisa deskriptif, (2) Teknik keabsahan data dengan menggunakan triangulasi sumber data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, (1) Strategi guru akidah akhlak dalam membina kepribadian siswa di MTs Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol Pagelaran Malang yaitu dengan suri tauladan, pembiasaan dan hukuman bagi siswa, (2) Faktor pendukung dan penghambat pembinaan kepribadian siswa di MTs Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol Pagelaran Malang, faktor pendukung (guru professional, kemudian adanya kegiatan sholat duha berjamaah, membaca yasin, sholat duhur berjamaah, pelajaran kitab kuning) faktor penghambat (lingkungan keluarga dan masyarakat), (3) hasil pembinaan kepribadian siswa di MTs Mambaul Ulum Sumbergempol Pagelaran Malang yaitu adanya perubahan dan kesadaran dari setiap pelanggaran yang dilakukan siswa, saling menghormati, saling menyapa
