Psoriatic Pseudobalanitis Circinata as a Post-Viral Koebner Phenomenon

    Get PDF
In the absence of any other lesions on the body, the diagnosis of localized genital psoriasis can be difficult, requiring further examinations including a biopsy. We report a case of psoriatic pseudobalanitis circinata triggered by a herpes virus infection, and we discuss the Koebner phenomenon and the therapeutic management of psoriasis of the genital area

Since antiquity, scientists have attempted to fathom ‘space’ and its relation to the individual and the society. The consideration of ‘gender’ since the 1980s has lead to modifications and restatements of the academic discourse in various disciplines. Common to the two concepts is the theoretical diversity of the definition as well as the competing paradigms. The approach to the concept of ‘space’ in this paper explores an interdisciplinary field by unfolding the epistemological history of space theory, at which feminist informed theories are at the crux. It will be considered if and how the two concepts of ‘space’ and ‘gender’ can be correlated to each other in the narration Kassandra by Christa Wolf. The analysis is based on a coalescence of the feministic and postcolonial text analyses methods and Henri Lefebvre’s space theory as well as its feministic restatement by Doreen Massey. The result of this analysis shows how ‘space’ and ‘gender’ are functionalized as narrative strategies and plot managing elements in the text

Longitudinal study of microvascular involvement by nailfold capillaroscopy in children with Henoch-Schönlein purpura

The aim of this study is to describe by video-nailfold capillaroscopy the microvascular involvement and capillary changes in children with Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSp) and to establish a possible correlation with clinical outcome. Thirty-one patients underwent capillaroscopic evaluation through a videomicroscope during the acute phase and after 6 months. Twenty sex/age-matched controls were also examined. All capillaroscopic variables were statistically examined in combination with laboratoristic/clinical data. Architectural and morphological changes recorded during the acute phase were statistically significant in comparison to the controls (p < 0.01). At the follow-up, oedema was still observed in all patients, whereas, morphological changes only in two. There was a no significant correlation between capillaroscopy changes, laboratoristic/clinical data, and outcome. Video-nailfold capillaroscopy can be a simple tool to evaluate microvascular abnormalities in the acute phase of HSp, and the persistence of oedema could suggest an incomplete disease resolution at a microvascular level

Inframammary Dermatitis: A Case of Localized Late-Onset Darier’s Disease

Darier’s disease (DD) is an autosomal dominant inherited genodermatosis which is often under- or misdiagnosed. In the majority of cases, the disease manifests in adolescents or young adults with small brownish-yellow, warty, hyperkeratotic papules in multiple seborrheic areas of the body. Localized DD (LDD) is a clinical variant, first described by Kreibich in 1906; only a few cases are reported in the literature. We described the case of an aged woman presenting with LDD, and we review the literature on this subject

Early-onset basal cell carcinoma in a case of Ivemark syndrome

    No full text
First described by the Swedish paediatrician, Bj\uf6rn Ivemark, (1925-2005), IS is a rare congenital heterotaxic disorder with lateralization anomalies [1]. It accounts for 1- 3% of all congenital heart defects, with an incidence of 1 in 10-20,000 live births. To date, about 200 cases have been reported in the literature, mostly sporadic, but familial occurrence has also been described, suggesting autosomal recessive inheritance, with a male preponderance

Proinflammatory cytokine production in HaCaT cells treated by eosin: implications for the topical treatment of psoriasis

Psoriasis is a multifactorial skin dermatosis characterized in its classical form by erythematous and hyperkeratotic plaques on extensor surfaces of the body, that in most cases can be managed therapeutically by topical agents. Hyperproliferation and a marked inflammation in both epidermis and dermis are thought to be driven by interaction of activated type-1 T lymphocytes and antigen-presenting cells and keratinocytes that release several proinflammatory and immunomodulating molecules. The aim of this study is to investigate whether tetrabromofluorecin, commonly know as eosin, a classical compound traditionally topically used in psoriasis for its presumed anti-inflammatory activities, is able to modulate the production of TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-8 that are recognized as the most active and characterized cytokines in the pathogenesis of this skin disorder. HaCaT cell line was used to verify the effects on epidermal inflammation by eosin at scalar doses after testing the viability of cells. Two different population of cells, one stimulated by IFNgamma and one non-stimulated, were cultivated in presence of tolerable concentrations. The expression and release of IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and TNF-alpha were analysed by RT-PCR and ELISA, respectively. Our results show that tolerable concentrations of eosin were 0.05%, 0.02%, and 0.01%. The expression and production of TNFalpha, IL-8 and IL-6 were dramatically reduced in presence of eosin 0.05% and 0.02% and the action of eosin was more pronounced on TNF-alpha. In agreement with clinical data, our results show that in presence of tolerable concentrations, eosin seems to influence remarkably the production of three important cytokines involved in the hyperproliferation and inflammatory process, giving a specific explanation of its efficacy and supporting its topical use in the clinical setting
