Differential rotation of Kepler-71 via transit photometry mapping of faculae and starspots
Knowledge of dynamo evolution in solar-type stars is limited by the difficulty of using active region monitoring to measure stellar differential rotation, a key probe of stellar dynamo physics. This paper addresses the problem by presenting the first ever measurement of stellar differential rotation for a main-sequence solar-type star using starspots and faculae to provide complementary information. Our analysis uses modelling of light curves of multiple exoplanet transits for the young solar-type star Kepler-71, utilizing archival data from the Kepler mission. We estimate the physical characteristics of starspots and faculae on Kepler-71 from the characteristic amplitude variations they produce in the transit light curves and measure differential rotation from derived longitudes. Despite the higher contrast of faculae than those in the Sun, the bright features on Kepler-71 have similar properties such as increasing contrast towards the limb and larger sizes than sunspots. Adopting a solar-type differential rotation profile (faster rotation at the equator than the poles), the results from both starspot and facula analysis indicate a rotational shear less than about 0.005 rad d-1, or a relative differential rotation less than 2 per cent, and hence almost rigid rotation. This rotational shear contrasts with the strong rotational shear of zero-age main-sequence stars and the modest but significant shear of the modern-day Sun. Various explanations for the likely rigid rotation are considered

Hydrodynamics of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Equation in Two Dimensions
The large scale properties of spatiotemporal chaos in the 2d
Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation are studied using an explicit coarse graining
scheme. A set of intermediate equations are obtained. They describe
interactions between the small scale (e.g., cellular) structures and the
hydrodynamic degrees of freedom. Possible forms of the effective large scale
hydrodynamics are constructed and examined. Although a number of different
universality classes are allowed by symmetry, numerical results support the
simplest scenario, that being the KPZ universality class.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Overview of the BlockNormal Event Trigger Generator
In the search for unmodeled gravitational wave bursts, there are a variety of
methods that have been proposed to generate candidate events from time series
data. Block Normal is a method of identifying candidate events by searching for
places in the data stream where the characteristic statistics of the data
change. These change-points divide the data into blocks in which the
characteristics of the block are stationary. Blocks in which these
characteristics are inconsistent with the long term characteristic statistics
are marked as Event-Triggers which can then be investigated by a more
computationally demanding multi-detector analysis.Comment: GWDAW-8 proceedings, 6 pages, 2 figure

A pseudo-spectral approach to inverse problems in interface dynamics
An improved scheme for computing coupling parameters of the
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation from a collection of successive interface
profiles, is presented. The approach hinges on a spectral representation of
this equation. An appropriate discretization based on a Fourier representation,
is discussed as a by-product of the above scheme. Our method is first tested on
profiles generated by a one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation where it
is shown to reproduce the input parameters very accurately. When applied to
microscopic models of growth, it provides the values of the coupling parameters
associated with the corresponding continuum equations. This technique favorably
compares with previous methods based on real space schemes.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, revtex 3.0 with epsf style, to appear in Phys.
