Exploring the effect of reporter-source relationship on reporting outcome
Quality of news story widely depends on the quality of the source. Avital part of the reporter’s job consists of cultivating sources, the lifelineof journalism. The present study attempts to study the impact of differentaspects of cultivating routine sources on their news related outcome inthe context of Bangladesh. For this study, data were collected throughstructured and self administered questionnaire from 105 reporters (N =105) working in different newspapers in the country’s second largestcity and commercial capital Chittagong. Chi-square (2) tests wereperformed between reporting outcome as the dependent variable anddifferent component of relationship as independent variables. Besides,Spearman’s correlation was employed to see the association betweenthe variables. The findings reveal that maintaining friendly relations, nurturing relationship in everyday life, showing respect to off the recordand concealing sources identity were appeared to be significant (p <0.01) predictor for high level of news outcome, while maintainingfriendly and good relationship and presenting gift were associated(p < 0.05) with outcome
Mechanical properties and thermal behaviour of two-stage concrete containing palm oil fuel ash
Two-stage concrete (TSC) is a special type of concrete which is made by placing coarse aggregate in a formwork and injecting a grout either by pump or under the gravity force to fill the voids. Over the decades, the application of supplementary cementing materials in conventional concrete has become widespread, and this trend is expected to continue in TSC as well. Palm oil fuel ash (POFA) is one of the ashes which has been recognized as a good pozzolanic material. This paper presents the experimental results on the performance behaviour of POFA in developing physical and mechanical properties of two-stage concrete. Four concrete mixes namely, TSC with 100% OPC as a control, and TSC with 10, 20 and 30% POFA were cast, and the temperature growth due to heat of hydration and heat transfer in the mixes was recorded. It has been found that POFA significantly reduced the temperature rise in two-stage aggregate concrete and delayed the transfer of heat to the mass of concrete. The compressive and tensile strengths, however, increased with the replacement of up to 20% POFA. The results obtained and the observation made in this study suggest that the substitution of OPC by POFA is beneficial, particularly for prepacked mass concrete where thermal cracking due to extreme heat rise is of great importance
Theory and empirical evidence of the gender wage gap
Women participation in the labor force has steadily increased over the last several decades, Despite this, women still remain in lower status, less interesting and less well paid jobs. Differences in family and economic roles between men and women have resulted in wage discrimination between men and women. Attempts to explain the gender wage differential generally rely on human capital and labor market segmentation theories. The human capital theory attributes wage differentials to differences in education, training and work experience. Labor market segmentation theory on the other hand attribute wage differentials to the segmentation of the labor market into primary and secondary sectors. The human capital theory remains the dominant theory explaining wage differentials between male and females. Research evidence does suggest
that differences in the level of education and experience between male and female influence wages
Seepage Through Different Concrete Cut Off Wall Connection Systems Case Study: Karkheh Storage Dam
Seepage and water flow is one of the most important factors in design of embankment dams. The seepage through the foundation of earth dams can be controlled using the concrete cut off walls. The hydraulic head reduces in connection zone of the cut off wall and core of the dam that results to high hydraulic gradients. As a result, erosion and water leakage may occur. In this regard, the design of concrete cut off wall connection to the clayey core of earth dam is important. In this research, the total flow and the hydraulic gradient are considered to study the seepage through different cut off wall connection systems. The Karkheh storage dam with a plastic concrete cut off wall is selected for the seepage analysis. Six different connection systems are modeled and the effect of physical and mechanical factors like, the cut off wall permeability and the geometry of the connection systems on the total flow and the maximum hydraulic gradient are investigated. The connection systems with minimum flow and hydraulic gradient are determined. According to the results, the cut off wall connection system is an important part that affects the flow in earth dams. In this regard, the connection system with the most effective characteristics and suitability in construction is determined
Design of frequency selective limiting circuit
This paper explains the design of frequencyselective
limiting circuit. The circuit is typically based on
nonlinear matched reflection-mode bandstop resonator.
This type of Frequency Selective Limiters achieves fast
switching, high-level of power limiting, and flexible channel bandwidth. For single channel limiting, a device with one resonator (first order) produced a band-stop response centred at 2 GHz with 250 MHz of limiting bandwidth, 0 dBm limiting threshold, and 32 dB limiting level and it gave an all-pass response with less than 2.5 dB insertion loss at low RF powers. Multi-resonator filter has been used in order to improve the performance of the device. The prototype will produce intermodulation distortions and response time. Simulated results show an excellent highly selective bandstop performance at high powers with a near all-pass response at low signal powers
