Upper respiratory tract infection in children – immunostimulating treatment

    Get PDF
This paper is a review of publications on viral infections of the upper aerotract in children. Recurring infections can be a consequence of the lack of treatment, inappropriate therapy or accompanying diseases. It is possible that an impaired condition of immunity leads to recurring infections. In this review a great deal of attention has been given to the mechanisms and the various stages of viral infection, and the onset of an organism’s defense mechanisms against viruses. The function of the immunomodulatory and immunostimulatory medical product, namely inosine pranobex has been evaluated in in vitro and in vivo studies. A review of the antiviral activity of inosine pranobex and the onset of cellular and humoral immunity has been presented

Infections in the maxillofacial and neck region are a serious problem nowadays. Lately diagnosed infection may lead to many hazardous complications including spreading through superior thoracic aperture to the mediastinum. That affects everyday life of patients, including his ability to work. The aim of this study was to analyze the factors affecting work inability associated with the treatment of maxillofacial and neck infections. We made a retrospective analysis of medical documentation of patients treated in our Department due to the infections of maxillofacial and neck region. In our research, mostly men were burden with infections in the maxilliofacial region and neck (64.3%). Patient presented poor oral hygiene thus the main cause of the infection was periodontal. Treatment period (including hospitalization and inability to work) varied from 1 up to 124 days; Mostly affected are patients in their 3rd and 4th decade of life when they are professionally active. A proper treatment (including surgical and pharmacological) is required to allow those patients come back to their everyday life

Communication, Liminality, and Hope: The September 11th Missing Person Posters

Immediately following the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, family and friends of victims missing in the towers began placing ‘‘Missing Person Posters’’ of their loved ones around New York City. In this paper, we argue that the posters represent a powerful response to a traumatic and in some ways unprecedented situation, a response that transformed the death of loved ones from a reality or future certainty into a probability made possible by the searchers’ desire, emotions, or imagination. We demonstrate how the posters, operating in the ‘‘subjunctive’’ voice, transformed the ‘‘ liminal’’ space between life and death and ‘‘haunted’’ onlookers, so that survivors and spectators alike could ponder the possibilities of a world that would ‘‘hopefully’’ turn out for the best. We also consider the implications of the posters for those who were unable to acknowledge the loss of their loved ones

We present a case of iatrogenic complication after extraction of the teeth 35 in 63-years old women. There was a root of the teeth left in the bone. It was a causative agent of pain sensations and inflammation of the surrounding tissues. Due to the close distance between the root, mandible canal and mental foramen of mandible the removal of relict root was burden with high risk of parasthesis

Myxofibrosarcoma Mimicking Inflammatory Lesion of Temporomandibular Joint—Case Presentation

Treating oncologic patients remains a challenge for surgeons aiming to provide patients with safe margins of resection while maintaining the highest possible quality of life. The latter, in the case of malignancies, requires using sophisticated methods of reconstruction. Thus, we present a case of a 75-year-old patient treated in our department with a rare neoplasm in the region of the temporomandibular joint—a myxofibrosarcoma that was mimicking an inflammatory lesion. The patient underwent two surgeries—firstly alloplasty of the TMJ due to the suspicion of an inflammatory lesion, lately extended to the resection of glenoid fossa and subtemporal fossa contents when the mandible was reconstructed using UHMW-PE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene). The patient was also referred for adjuvant radiotherapy and has remained disease-free for over 96 months with very good aesthetics and function of the mandible. The presented case highlights not only the need for increased oncologic awareness but also the possible use of UHMW-PE as a reconstruction material in the broad resection of the maxillofacial region
