A Markov chain model for predicting Major League Baseball
In this report, we present a Markov chain model for predicting the scores and the winning team of Major League Baseball (MLB) games. We discuss how a baseball game can be viewed as an infinite horizon discrete-time Markov chain with finite state space. We demonstrate how standard Markov chain theory can be used to obtain analytical solutions for the expected runs and win probability in a given MLB matchup. We improve upon previous models by incorporating pitching and more complex baserunning, and then demonstrate the effect of these changes by comparing our model to historical data. We also discuss computational methods for solving the model. Finally, we test our model on games from the 2015 MLB season.Operations Research and Industrial Engineerin
2007 Annual Report: Hydrologic Conditions in Baseflow Reaches Pursuant to Conditions 14 and 15, Santa Lucia Preserve, Monterey County, California
This report presents the results of the 2007 baseflow condition surveys of the four major streams flowing through Santa Lucia Preserve- Las Garzas, Portrero, San Jose, and San Clemente Creeks. This report has been prepared for the Santa Lucia Conservancy and is primarily intended for the staff of Monterey County and California Department of Fish and Game, in accordance with the baseflow monitoring and reporting requirements outlined in County Conditions 14 and 15. The scope of this report is limited to the presentation and evaluation of existing baseflow conditions as required by Conditions 14 and 15, and is not intended as a comprehensive analysis. However, data presented here are an important part of the long term data set that will be used for future in depth watershed analyses. (Document contains 13 pages & 14 figs
Analytical Treatment of the Power Transfer Relationships for a Coupled, Current-Fed, Multi-Port Dual Active Bridge Converter
Existing research has demonstrated that mutual inductors within the load ports of a Dual Active Bridge (DAB)-based converter enable fault tolerant operation. Similar research efforts with the DAB converter have also proven that incorporating a multi-winding transformer in the design can result in an interconnection of multiple DC buses with isolation and reduced switching losses. Therefore, a current-fed, multi-port DAB converter is proposed with the intention of capturing the benefits of both features. The performance of the proposed converter is evaluated against the traditional multi-port DAB. In particular, the potentially non-ideal square waveforms at load port voltages are mathematically described. The converter characteristic equations are then verified with PLECS simulations. Finally, the effects of inductor size on port voltages and power transfer are explored. The results of the analyses provide the conditions in which simplification to power flow equations for voltage-fed multi-port converters is applicable
Wobblies in Washington: The Radicalism and Downfall of the IWW in the Northwest
This paper is an examination of the radical philosophy and propaganda of the Industrial Workers of The World (IWW), also known as the Wobblies, during the period of 1909-1919. in the Pacific Northwest, focusing on the State of Washington. In order to accomplish this, the paper examines several key Wobbly political cartoons, and explains the impact that their propaganda had on union organizing and labor movements in the Northwest. Additionally, The political atmosphere of the time period and the many clashes between the radical IWW and the mainstream American society of the time. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the way in which the radicalism of the IWW led to its downfall in Washington State, which was originally a Wobbly stronghold
