Improving co-authorship network structures by combining multiple data sources: evidence from Italian academic statisticians

    Get PDF
The aim of the present contribution is to merge bibliographic data for members of a bounded scientific community in order to derive a complete unified archive, with top-international and nationally oriented production, as a new basis to carry out network analysis on a unified co-authorship network. A two-step procedure is used to deal with the identification of duplicate records and the author name disambiguation. Specifically, for the second step we strongly drew inspiration from a well-established unsupervised disambiguation method proposed in the literature following a network-based approach and requiring a restricted set of record attributes. Evidences from Italian academic statisticians were provided by merging data from three bibliographic archives. Non-negligible differences were observed in network results in the comparison of disambiguated and not disambiguated data sets, especially in network measures at individual level

Potential and effective support network of young Italian adults

International literature on individual behavior has shown the importance of the network of relationships binding individuals to the people who are close to them in everyday life. Family and other role relations are important sources of emotional and instrumental support, as well as social companionship. For the Italian scenario, the 2003 Generations and Gender Survey offers some challenges for constructing ego-centered support networks based on reasonable assumptions of the frequency of contacts and residential proximity of respondents with kin, friends and neighbors. Focusing on young Italian adults aged 18-34 years who are single or have a partner, we defne two kinds of support networks - the potential support ego network and the efective family network - with the aim of analyzing the efects of network characteristics (size and composition) on the probability of receiving help. Our findings show that couples received more support more often than singles. Although singles' potential support networks were more characterized by no family ties than the ones of partners, the availability of a 'comprehensive' network or a network not 'encapsulated' only in the family increased the probability of receiving help in both groups. Moreover, gender diferences provide evidence of distinct behavior between partners in activating their network for (family) support

Empowering society by reusing privately held data for official statistics - A European approach

The High-Level Expert Group on facilitating the use of new data sources for official statistics has been created in the context of the data and digital strategy of the European Commission (EC). The task of the Expert Group is to provide recommendations aimed at enhancing data sharing between businesses and government (B2G) for the purpose of producing official statistics (B2G4S). The Expert Group consists of high-level experts with various backgrounds that are particularly relevant to B2G4S. Businesses generate and use data primarily for business-related purposes. The motivation for B2G4S stems from the high societal value that such privately held data can potentially generate when transformed into reliable, relevant and timely official statistics that are made available to everybody, for free. Transforming data into statistical information requires cooperation between private data holders and statistical authorities. On a voluntary basis there have been many collaborative efforts by businesses and statistical authorities to produce statistics based on privately held data, but for various reasons the use of such data for official statistics is still far below the level required to provide society with the high-quality and timely official statistics it needs in the increasingly data-driven world

Co-authorship networks and scientific performance: an empirical analysis using the generalized extreme value distribution

This paper aims to explore the effects of collaborative behaviour on scholar scientific performance. Individual network measures related to scholar centrality as well as attitude to collaborate with others are derived from co-authorship networks in a given scientific community (i.e. Italian academic statisticians). Co-authorship information have been collected from three data sources of national-based, discipline-based, and international-based high-impact publications. Both network and individual covariates are used to model individual h-index by generalized extreme value distribution. Results show a positive association between performance and actors' central position in the network. Having a large number of co-authors and occupying central positions are likely to positively affect scientific performance
