    Serology based disease status of Pakistani population infected with Hepatitis B virus

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The infection rate of hepatitis B virus is continuously increasing in Pakistan. Therefore, a comprehensive study of epidemiological data is the need of time.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 1300 individuals were screened for HBV infection markers including HBsAg, anti-HBsAg, HBeAg and anti-HBcAg. The association of these disease indicators was compared with patients' epidemiological characteristics like age, socio-economic status and residential area to analyze and find out the possible correlation among these variables and the patients disease status.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>52 (4%) individuals were found positive for HBsAg with mean age 23.5 ± 3.7 years. 9.30%, 33.47% and 12% individuals had HBeAg, antibodies for HBsAg, and antibodies for HBcAg respectively. HBsAg seropositivity rate was significantly associated (<it>p </it>= 0.03) with the residing locality indicating high infection in rural areas. Antibodies titer against HBsAg decreased with the increasing age reflecting an inverse correlation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results indicate high prevalence rate of Hepatitis B virus infection and nationwide vaccination campaigns along with public awareness and educational programs are needed to be practiced urgently.</p

    Thermal-aware SoC test scheduling with test set partitioning and interleaving

    High temperature has become a major problem for system-on-chip testing. In order to reduce the test application time while keeping the temperatures of the cores under test within safe ranges, a thermal-aware test scheduling technique is required. This paper presents an approach to minimize the test application time and, at the same time, prevent the temperatures of cores under test going beyond given limits. We employ test set partitioning to divide test sets into shorter test sequences, and add cooling periods between test sequences so that overheating can be avoided. Moreover, test sequences from different test sets are interleaved, such that the cooling periods and the bandwidth of the test bus can be utilized for test data transportation, and hence the test application time can be reduced. The test scheduling problem is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem, and we use the constraint logic programming (CLP) to build the optimization model and find the optimal solution. As the optimization time of the CLP-based approach increases exponentially with the problem size, we also propose a heuristic which generates longer test schedules but requires substantially shorter optimization time. Experimental results have shown the efficiency of the proposed approach

    MicroRNAs in liver cancer: a model for investigating pathogenesis and novel therapeutic approaches

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) constitute a large class of short RNAs (e.g., 20-24 nucleotides in length), whose main function is to posttranscriptionally regulate the expression of protein-coding genes. Their importance in tumorigenesis has been demonstrated over the past decade, and correspondingly, they have emerged as potential therapeutic molecules and targets. Liver cancer is one of the most common neoplastic diseases worldwide, and it currently has a poor prognosis owing to largely ineffective therapeutic options. Liver cancer is also an excellent model for testing miRNA-based therapy approaches as it can be easily targeted with the systemic delivery of oligonucleotides. In recent years, the role of miRNAs in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been established with molecular studies and the development of animal models. These studies have also provided the basis for evaluating the therapeutic potential of miRNAs, or anti-miRNAs. In general, the safety of miRNAs has been proven and antitumor activity has been observed. Moreover, because of the absence or presence of mild side effects, the prophylactic use of miRNA-based approaches may be foreseen
