Aspect ratio dependence of heat transport by turbulent Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard convection in rectangular cells

We report high-precision measurements of the Nusselt number NuNu as a function of the Rayleigh number RaRa in water-filled rectangular Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard convection cells. The horizontal length LL and width WW of the cells are 50.0 cm and 15.0 cm, respectively, and the heights H=49.9H=49.9, 25.0, 12.5, 6.9, 3.5, and 2.4 cm, corresponding to the aspect ratios (ΓxL/H,ΓyW/H)=(1,0.3)(\Gamma_x\equiv L/H,\Gamma_y\equiv W/H)=(1,0.3), (2,0.6)(2,0.6), (4,1.2)(4,1.2), (7.3,2.2)(7.3,2.2), (14.3,4.3)(14.3,4.3), and (20.8,6.3)(20.8,6.3). The measurements were carried out over the Rayleigh number range 6×105Ra10116\times10^5\lesssim Ra\lesssim10^{11} and the Prandtl number range 5.2Pr75.2\lesssim Pr\lesssim7. Our results show that for rectangular geometry turbulent heat transport is independent of the cells' aspect ratios and hence is insensitive to the nature and structures of the large-scale mean flows of the system. This is slightly different from the observations in cylindrical cells where NuNu is found to be in general a decreasing function of Γ\Gamma, at least for Γ=1\Gamma=1 and larger. Such a difference is probably a manifestation of the finite plate conductivity effect. Corrections for the influence of the finite conductivity of the top and bottom plates are made to obtain the estimates of NuNu_{\infty} for plates with perfect conductivity. The local scaling exponents βl\beta_l of NuRaβlNu_{\infty}\sim Ra^{\beta_l} are calculated and found to increase from 0.243 at Ra9×105Ra\simeq9\times10^5 to 0.327 at Ra4×1010Ra\simeq4\times10^{10}.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, Accepted by Journal of Fluid Mechanic

COCA: Classifier-Oriented Calibration for Source-Free Universal Domain Adaptation via Textual Prototype

Universal Domain Adaptation (UniDA) aims to distinguish common and private classes between the source and target domains where domain shift exists. Recently, due to more stringent data restrictions, researchers have introduced Source-Free UniDA (SF-UniDA) in more realistic scenarios. SF-UniDA methods eliminate the need for direct access to source samples when performing adaptation to the target domain. However, existing SF-UniDA methods still require an extensive quantity of labeled source samples to train a source model, resulting in significant labeling costs. To tackle this issue, we present a novel Classifier-Oriented Calibration (COCA) method. This method, which leverages textual prototypes, is formulated for the source model based on few-shot learning. Specifically, we propose studying few-shot learning, usually explored for closed-set scenarios, to identify common and domain-private classes despite a significant domain shift between source and target domains. Essentially, we present a novel paradigm based on the vision-language model to learn SF-UniDA and hugely reduce the labeling costs on the source domain. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art UniDA and SF-UniDA models

Experimental Investigation of Longitudinal Space-Time Correlations of the Velocity Field in Turbulent Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard Convection

We report an experimental investigation of the longitudinal space-time cross-correlation function of the velocity field, C(r,τ)C(r,\tau), in a cylindrical turbulent Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard convection cell using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. We show that while the Taylor's frozen-flow hypothesis does not hold in turbulent thermal convection, the recent elliptic model advanced for turbulent shear flows [He & Zhang, \emph{Phys. Rev. E} \textbf{73}, 055303(R) (2006)] is valid for the present velocity field for all over the cell, i.e., the isocorrelation contours of the measured C(r,τ)C(r,\tau) have a shape of elliptical curves and hence C(r,τ)C(r,\tau) can be related to C(rE,0)C(r_E,0) via rE2=(rβτ)2+γ2τ2r_E^2=(r-\beta\tau)^2+\gamma^2\tau^2 with β\beta and γ\gamma being two characteristic velocities. We further show that the fitted β\beta is proportional to the mean velocity of the flow, but the values of γ\gamma are larger than the theoretical predictions. Specifically, we focus on two representative regions in the cell: the region near the cell sidewall and the cell's central region. It is found that β\beta and γ\gamma are approximately the same near the sidewall, while β0\beta\simeq0 at cell center.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, submitted to J. Fluid Mec

Since the innovation of college English teaching, the cultivation of students’ self-study ability has become a target of the New Requirements for College English Teaching. As one of the country’s 180 experimental academies chosen by National Education Commission, our college adopts the teaching mode of combing classroom teaching and computer-based self-study system. Through the practice of students of grades 2004 and 2005, we can see that the comprehensive application ability of the students does not improve largely. Most students do not satisfy the oral English requirements of common standard. Their self-study ability is insufficient. In this paper, my opinion on how to cultivate students’ English self-study ability in the computer and classroom teaching mode will be given. Expression of CD147 on monocytes/macrophages in rheumatoid arthritis: its potential role in monocyte accumulation and matrix metalloproteinase production

Monocytes/macrophages play an important role in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) pathogenesis. They can activate fibroblasts through many molecules, including IL-1 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, but there have been very few reports on the role of CD147 in RA. In our study, the results of flow cytometry reveal that the mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of CD147 expression on CD14+ monocytes of peripheral blood from RA patients was higher than that in normal control and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients. The MFI of CD147 expression on the CD14+ monocytes in RA synovial fluid was higher than that in RA peripheral blood. Immunohistochemical staining shows that CD147 expression in RA synovium correlated with matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 expression. A double immunofluorescent assay shows that CD147 was expressed on CD68+ cells in RA synovium. The potential role of CD147 in cyclophilin A (CyPA)-mediated cell migration was studied using a chemotaxis assay in vitro and it was found that the addition of anti-CD147 antibody or a CD147 antagonistic peptide significantly decreased the chemotactic index of the mononuclear cells. The role of CD147 in MMP production and cell invasion in vitro were studied through the co-culture of human CD14+ monocytes or monocytic line THP-1 cells and human fibroblasts, as well as by gel zymography and an invasion assay. Significantly elevated release and activation of MMP-9 and/or MMP-2 were seen in the co-culture of human monocytes/THP-1 cells and fibroblasts compared with cultures of the cells alone. An increased number of cells invading through the filters in the invasion assays was also observed in the co-cultured cells. The addition of CD147 antagonistic peptide had some inhibitory effect, not only on MMP production but also on cell invasion in the co-culture. Our study demonstrates that the increased expression of CD147 on monocytes/macrophages in RA may be responsible for elevated MMP secretion, cell invasion and CyPA-mediated cell migration into the joints, all of which may contribute to the cartilage and bone destruction of RA. These findings, together with a better understanding of CD147, CyPA and RA, will help in the development of innovative therapeutic interventions for RA

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Placental efficiency is strongly associated with litter size, fetal weight and prenatal mortality. Together with its rapid growth during late gestation, the Large White pig breed shows a significant increase in placental size and weight, but this does not occur in the highly prolific Chinese pig breeds. To understand the molecular basis of placental development during late gestation in Chinese indigenous and Western breeds with different placental efficiency, female placental samples were collected from six pregnant Erhualian gilts at gestation day 75 (E75) and day 90 (E90) and from six pregnant Large White gilts at gestation day 75 (L75) and day 90 (L90). Two female placentas from one sow were used to extract RNA and then pooled in equal volumes. Twelve pooled samples were hybridized to the porcine Affymetrix GeneChip.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 226 and 577 transcripts were detected that were differentially expressed between E75 and L75 and between E90 and L90 (p < 0.01, q < 0.2), respectively. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis revealed that these genes belong to the class of genes that participate in angiogenesis and development. Real-time RT-PCR confirmed the differential expression of eight selected genes. Significant differential expression of five genes in the <it>VEGF </it>pathway was also detected between the breeds. A search of chromosomal location revealed that 44 differentially expressed genes located to QTL regions related to reproduction. Differential expression of six candidate imprinted genes was also confirmed. Three of the six genes (<it>PLAGL1</it>, <it>DIRAS3</it>, and <it>SLC38A4</it>) showed monoallelic expression in the porcine placenta.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our study detected many genes that showed differential expression between placentas of two divergent breed of pigs, and confirmed the imprinting of three genes. These findings help to elucidate the genetic control of placental efficiency and improve the understanding of placental development.</p
