    SO(5) Superconductors in a Zeeman Magnetic Field

    Full text link
    The generic symmetry of a system under a uniform Zeeman magnetic field is U(1) x U(1). However, we show that SO(5) models in the presence of a finite chemical potential and a finite Zeeman magnetic field can have a exact SU(2) x U(1) symmetry. This principle can be used to test SO(5) symmetry at any doping level

    On the Benign One-Pot Preparation of Nanoporous Copper Thin Films with Bimodal Chan-nel Size Distributions by Chemical Dealloying in an Alkaline Solution

    Nanoporous copper (NPC) thin films with bimodal channel size distributions can be benignly fabricated by one-pot chemical dealloying of dual-phase Al 27 at Cu alloy with hypereutectic structure in the NaOH solution. The microstructure of these NPC thin films was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The results show that these NPC thin films are composed of interconnected large-sized channels (100s of nm) with highly porous channel walls (10s of nm), in which large-sized channels resulting from entire dissolution of solid solution while small-sized those de-riving from part corrosion of intermetallics.     Do the A4c60 Fullerides Have a Broken-Symmetry Ground State?

    Band theory predicts both K3C60 and K4C60 to be metals; various experimental probes show that while K3C60 is indeed metallic, K4C60 appears to be insulating. The standard view of this apparent failure of the single-particle picture is that electron correlation is predominant. We describe an alternative scenario, motivated on theoretical grounds, which invokes a spin- or charge-density-wave state to explain the observed insulating behavior.Comment: 9 pages + 3 figures, REVTeX 3.

    Braided m-Lie algebras induced by multiplication are introduced, which generalize Lie algebras, Lie color algebras and quantum Lie algebras. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the braided m-Lie algebras to be strict Jacobi braided Lie algebras are given. Two classes of braided m-Lie algebras are given, which are generalized matrix braided m-Lie algebras and braided m-Lie subalgebras of EndFMEnd_F M, where MM is a Yetter-Drinfeld module over BB with dim B<B< \infty . In particular, generalized classical braided m-Lie algebras slq,f(GMG(A),F)sl_{q, f}(GM_G(A), F) and ospq,t(GMG(A),M,F)osp_{q, t} (GM_G(A), M, F) of generalized matrix algebra GMG(A)GM_G(A) are constructed and their connection with special generalized matrix Lie superalgebra sls,f(GMZ2(As),F)sl_{s, f}(GM_{{\bf Z}_2}(A^s), F) and orthosymplectic generalized matrix Lie super algebra osps,t(GMZ2(As),Ms,F)osp_{s, t} (GM_{{\bf Z}_2}(A^s), M^s, F) are established.     Compact graphene mode-locked wavelength-tunable erbium-doped fiber lasers: from all anomalous dispersion towards all normal dispersion

    Soliton operation and soliton wavelength tuning of erbium-doped fiber lasers mode locked with atomic layer graphene was experimentally investigated under various cavity dispersion conditions. It was shown that not only wide range soliton wavelength tuning but also soltion pulse width variation could be obtained in the fiber lasers. Our results show that the graphene mode locked erbium-doped fiber lasers provide a compact, user friendly and low cost wavelength tunable ultrahsort pulse source

    Surfactant Assisted Synthesis of LiFePO4 Nanostructures via Hydrothermal Processing

    LiFePO4 is a potential cathode candidate for of secondary lithium batteries due to its low-cost, out-standing thermal stability and innocuity. In this paper, pure LiFePO4 obtained by hydrothermal method using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant. LiFePO4 particles produced without any surfactant showed typical morphologies of perfect octahedral with size of ~1μm. For products prepared with addition CTAB, the amount of surfactant controlled the growth of LiFePO4 crystals, with which dif-ferent morphologies of plate, grains and flower-like structures were produced. Plate products displayed a capacity of 145.70 mAh•g-1 at 0.1C, which was superior to others. The results indicated the electrochemical performance depends crucially on the size and structure of active materials.     Preparation of Nanostructured Li2MnO3 Cathode Materials by Single-Step Hydrothermal Method

    Nanosized (10~50 nm) cathode material Li2MnO3 was prepared for with MnSO4·H2O,KMnO4 and Li- OH aqueous solution as the precursor via single-step hydrothermal reaction by controlling the reaction time, proportion of processor, and the reagent concentration. The prepared materials were well crystallized and exhibited a monoclinic Li2MnO3 structure with a space group of C2/m phase. The electrochemical performance of the material was tested at current density of 60 mAg-1 (1/4 C) between 4.3V and 2.0 V at room temperature, showing good electrochemical properties with the initial discharge capacity of 243 mAh·g-1, because it was more exposed to the electrolyte due to its nanostructure.     Spin symmetry breaking in bilayer quantum Hall systems

    Based on the construction of generalized Halperin wave functions, we predict the possible existence of a large class of broken spin symmetry states in bilayer quantum Hall structures, generalizing the recently suggested canted antiferromgnetic phase to many fractional fillings. We develop the appropriate Chern-Simons theory, and establish explicitly that the low-lying neutral excitation is a Goldstone mode and that the charged excitations are bimerons with continuously tunable (through the canted antiferromagnetic order parameter) electric charge on the individual merons.Comment: 4 page
