Phase diagram and optical conductivity of the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model
The effects of quantum lattice fluctuations on the Peierls transition and the
optical conductivity in the one-dimensional Holstein model of spinless fermions
have been studied by developing an analytical approach, based on the unitary
transformation method. We show that when the electron-phonon coupling constant
decreases to a finite critical value the Peierls dimerization is destroyed by
the quantum lattice fluctuations. The dimerization gap is much more reduced by
the quantum lattice fluctuations than the phonon order parameter. The
calculated optical conductivity does not have the inverse-square-root
singularity but have a peak above the gap edge and there exists a significant
tail below the peak. The peak of optical-conductivity spectrum is not directly
corresponding to the dimerized gap. Our results of the phase diagram and the
spectral-weight function agree with those of the density matrix renormalization
group and the exact diagonalization methods.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures include
Cluster Monte Carlo Simulations of the Nematic--Isotropic Transition
We report the results of simulations of the Lebwohl-Lasher model of the
nematic-isotropic transition using a new cluster Monte Carlo algorithm. The
algorithm is a modification of the Wolff algorithm for spin systems, and
greatly reduces critical slowing down. We calculate the free energy in the
neighborhood of the transition for systems up to linear size 70. We find a
double well structure with a barrier that grows with increasing system size,
obeying finite size scaling for systems of size greater than 35. We thus obtain
an estimate of the value of the transition temperature in the thermodynamic
limit.Comment: 4 figure
Decoherence of Atomic Gases in Largely Detuned Laser Fields
We study theoretically the decoherence of a gas of bosonic atoms induced by
the interaction with a largely detuned laser beam. It is shown that for a
standing laser beam decoherence coincides with the single-particle result. For
a running laser beam many-particle effects lead to significant modifications.Comment: 5 pages, 2 Figures, RevTe
Transport criticality of the first-order Mott transition in a quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor, -(BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)]Cl
An organic Mott insulator, -(BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)]Cl, was
investigated by resistance measurements under continuously controllable He gas
pressure. The first-order Mott transition was demonstrated by observation of
clear jump in the resistance variation against pressure. Its critical endpoint
at 38 K is featured by vanishing of the resistive jump and critical divergence
in pressure derivative of resistance, , which are consistent with the prediction of the dynamical mean field
theory and have phenomenological correspondence with the liquid-gas transition.
The present results provide the experimental basis for physics of the Mott
transition criticality.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Coherent transport in a two-electron quantum dot molecule
We investigate the dynamics of two interacting electrons confined to a pair
of coupled quantum dots driven by an external AC field. By numerically
integrating the two-electron Schroedinger equation in time, we find that for
certain values of the strength and frequency of the AC field we can cause the
electrons to be localised within the same dot, in spite of the Coulomb
repulsion between them. Reducing the system to an effective two-site model of
Hubbard type and applying Floquet theory leads to a detailed understanding of
this effect. This demonstrates the possibility of using appropriate AC fields
to manipulate entangled states in mesoscopic devices on extremely short
timescales, which is an essential component of practical schemes for quantum
information processing.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; the section dealing with the perturbative
treatment of the Floquet states has been substantially expanded to make it

Plasma Wave Properties of the Schwarzschild Magnetosphere in a Veselago Medium
We re-formulate the 3+1 GRMHD equations for the Schwarzschild black hole in a
Veselago medium. Linear perturbation in rotating (non-magnetized and
magnetized) plasma is introduced and their Fourier analysis is considered. We
discuss wave properties with the help of wave vector, refractive index and
change in refractive index in the form of graphs. It is concluded that some
waves move away from the event horizon in this unusual medium. We conclude that
for the rotating non-magnetized plasma, our results confirm the presence of
Veselago medium while the rotating magnetized plasma does not provide any
evidence for this medium.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophys. Space

Neurotrophin-Induced Transport of a β-Actin mRNP Complex Increases β-Actin Levels and Stimulates Growth Cone Motility
AbstractNeurotrophin regulation of actin-dependent changes in growth cone motility may depend on the signaling of β-actin mRNA transport. Formation of an RNP complex between the β-actin mRNA zipcode sequence and Zipcode Binding Protein 1 (ZBP1) was required for its localization to growth cones. Antisense oligonucleotides to the zipcode inhibited formation of this RNP complex in vitro and the neurotrophin-induced localization of β-actin mRNA and ZBP1 granules. Live cell imaging of neurons transfected with EGFP-ZBP1 revealed fast, bidirectional movements of granules in neurites that were inhibited by antisense treatment, as visualized by FRAP analysis. NT-3 stimulation of β-actin protein localization was dependent on the 3′UTR and inhibited by antisense treatment. Growth cones exhibited impaired motility in the presense of antisense. These results suggest a novel mechanism to influence growth cone dynamics involving the regulated transport of mRNA
Magnetic Properties And Giant Magnetoresistance Of Magnetic Granular Co10cu90 Alloys Obtained By Direct-current Joule Heating
The direct-current (dc) joule heating technique was exploited to fabricate giant magnetoresistance (GMR) Co10Cu90 granular alloys. The Co cluster precipitation process was investigated by calorimetric and x-ray diffraction measurements. At T=10 K, the largest MR change of 25.0% has been observed for the melt-spun Co10Cu90 ribbon annealed at I=5 A. The magnetoresistance scales approximately as the inverse Co particle size. At room temperature, it was found that the dc joule-heated samples show relatively high GMR in comparison with furnace-annealed samples. Based on the phenomenological GMR model, we assumed that it is a consequence of smaller Co particles formed in dc joule-heated samples. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.7885062506
