TA treatment of depression : a hermeneutic single-case efficacy design study - âDeborahâ
This study is the third of a series of seven, and belongs
to the second Italian systematic replication of findings
from two previous series (Widdowson 2012a, 2012b,
2012c, 2013; Benelli, 2016a, 2016b, 2016c) that
investigated the effectiveness of a manualised
transactional analysis treatment for depression through
Hermeneutic Single-Case Efficacy Design (HSCED).
Major Depression and Subthreshold Depression are
often in comorbidity with Anxiety disorders in childhood
and adolescence and represent a risk factor for ongoing
mental health problems in adulthood. The therapist was
a white Italian woman with 15 years of clinical experience
and the client, Deborah, was a 15-year old white Italian
female adoloscent who attended sixteen sessions of
transactional analysis psychotherapy. The conclusion of
the judges was that this was a good-outcome case: the
depressive and anxious symptomatology clinically and
reliably improved over the course of the therapy and
these improvements were maintained throughout the
duration of the follow-up intervals. Furthermore, the client
reported significant change in her post-treatment
interview and these changes were directly attributed to
the therapy. In this case study, the transactional analysis
manualised treatment for depression in adulthood has
demonstrated its effectiveness also in treating
depressive and anxiety symptoms in adolescence

Immune senescence and immune activation in elderly colorectal cancer patients
In our previous study, we found that low thymic output and short telomere length were associated with a higher risk of tumor in elderly cancer patients. Here, we aimed to examine in depth the impact of immunological and biological senescence and immune activation on disease outcome in elderly patients with colorectal cancer (CRC).Peripheral blood samples from 81 CRC patients were studied for immune activation, immune senescence and recent thymic emigrant (RTE) CD4 and CD8 cells by flow cytometry. T-cell receptor rearrangement excision circle (TREC) levels and telomere lengths were measured by real-time PCR. Plasma levels of microbial translocation markers, LPS and sCD14, were quantified by ELISA. While TREC levels and telomere length were not prognostic of disease outcome, high percentages of immune senescent and immune activated CD8 cells were associated with a higher risk of a negative event (relapse, progression, or death) in all studied patients and disease relapse in I-Ill staged patients. Levels of sCD14 and LPS were higher in patients who will experience a negative event than in patients who will not. In conclusion, in elderly CRC patients higher immunological senescence and immune activation negatively impact the disease outcome; how these characteristics influence the antineoplastic treatments remains to be investigated
Insight into summer drought in southern Italy: palaeohydrological evolution of Lake Pergusa (Sicily) in the last 6700 years
The Sicily region (central Mediterranean) is at high risk of drying and desertification caused by current warming and land management. The aim of this study is to place current climatic changes within the past trajectories and natural climatic variability of the Holocene. For this we re-examine a sediment core retrieved at Lake Pergusa covering the last ca. 6700 years. A multiproxy investigation, and in particular the oxygen isotope composition of lacustrine carbonate (delta O-18(c)), allowed us to reconstruct decadal- to centennial-scale hydrological changes. The wettest period occurred between ca. 6700 and 6000 cal a bp. The delta O-18(c) record indicates a new period of wetter conditions between ca. 3700 and 2400 cal a bp. In particular, a delta O-18(c) minimum between 2850 and 2450 cal a bp overlaps with the period of the 'Great Solar Minimum' and corresponds to a dramatic reduction of arboreal pollen (AP%) and to an increase in synanthropic pollen, marking the onset of Greek colonization in the region. The longest driest interval corresponds to the Medieval Climate Anomaly, whereas the highest delta O-18(c) values are recorded in the last 150 years. The trend of the last 3000 years suggests that, considering future climate projections, the area will experience unprecedented drying exacerbated by human impact
Corrigendum to âPollen-based paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic change at Lake Ohrid (south-eastern Europe) during the past 500 kaâ published in Biogeosciences, 13, 1423â1437, 2016
In this corrigendum we report an updated pollen record from the Lake Ohrid DEEP site spanning the past 500 ka whereby we have reprocessed and re-analyzed 104 samples affected by chemical procedure problems that occurred in one palynological laboratory. Firstly, these samples were affected by the use of wrong containers, causing in- adequate settling of particles at the set centrifuging speed. Secondly, HCl and HF treatments were combined without the prescribed intermediate centrifuging and decanting steps. The inaccuracy in the protocol resulted in the loss of smaller pollen grains and in the overrepresentation of bisaccate ones in most of the re-analyzed samples. We therefore provide an updated set of figures with the new data and have revised the description of the results, discussion and conclusions re- ported in Sadori et al. (2016) where necessary. We stress that the majority of the original results and conclusions remain valid, while the recordsâ reliability and resolution have improved as 12 samples that had been omitted in the original study because of low count sums are now included in the revised dataset (Sadori et al., 2018)
Propagation of Chirality in Mixtures of Natural and Enantiomeric DNA Oligomers
Concentrated solutions of ultrashort duplex-forming DNA oligomers may develop various forms of liquid crystal ordering among which is the chiral nematic phase, characterized by a macroscopic helical precession of molecular orientation. The specifics of how chirality propagates from the molecular to the mesoscale is still unclear, both in general and in the case of DNA-based liquid crystals. We have here investigated the onset of nematic ordering and its chiral character in mixtures of natural D-DNA oligomers forming right-handed duplex helices and of mirror symmetric (L-DNA) molecules, forming left-handed helices. Since the nematic ordering of DNA duplexes is mediated by their end-to-end aggregation into linear columns, by controlling the terminals of both enantiomers we could study the propagation of chirality in solutions where the D and L species form mixtures of homochiral columns, and in solutions of heterochiral columns. The two systems behave in markedly different fashion. By adopting a simple model based on nearest-neighbor interactions, we account for the different observed dependence of the chirality of these two systems on the enantiomeric ratio
Imported dengue fever: a 16-years retrospective analysis in Milan (Italy) and a brief review of the European literature
Dengue Fever (DF), transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, is the most common arthropod-borne infection, it is almost ubiquitous in tropical and subtropical areas with an estimate of 360 million infections per year. A competent vector (A. albopictus) is present in most of Southern Europe and is endemic in Italy. We conducted a 16-year retrospective study of probable/confirmed dengue fever observed at the Department of Infectious Diseases of Luigi Sacco Hospital in Milan, Italy. Overall 122 patients were included in the study, 106 with probable and 16 with proven diagnosis of dengue fever. Most patients (91%) were Italian, with a median age of 35 years (IQR 29-46 years) and similar gender distribution, travelling for tourism (80%). Asia (mainly South East Asia and Indian Subcontinent) was the most frequent travel destination (55%), followed by Central America and the Caribbeans (22%). August-September was the peak season of presentation (42.6%). The majority of our diagnoses were based on serology alone. The most common signs and symptoms were fever (99,2%), maculopapular rash (50,8%), headache (50,8%), arthralgias (50,8%) and myalgias (46,7%). Leukopenia (77%), thrombocytopenia (81%) and altered LDH, AST and ALT (respectively 60,6%, 54,1% and 45,9%) were the most common laboratory test's abnormalities. No cases of severe DF were recorded. Our epidemiological and clinical findings are largely in accordance with most recent studies about imported DF in Europe. Although very similar in presentation to other arthropod-borne illnesses, some clinical features may help in differentiating DF from other causes of fever in the returning traveler
