Quantum Otto cycle with inner friction: finite-time and disorder effects
The concept of inner friction, by which a quantum heat engine is unable to
follow adiabatically its strokes and thus dissipates useful energy, is
illustrated in an exact physical model where the working substance consists of
an ensemble of misaligned spins interacting with a magnetic field and
performing the Otto cycle. The effect of this static disorder under a
finite-time cycle gives a new perspective of the concept of inner friction
under realistic settings. We investigate the efficiency and power of this
engine and relate its performance to the amount of friction from misalignment
and to the temperature difference between heat baths. Finally we propose an
alternative experimental implementation of the cycle where the spin is encoded
in the degree of polarization of photons.Comment: Published version in the Focus Issue on "Quantum Thermodynamics

Induction of synchronized estrus in dairy goats with different gonadotrophins.
The objective of this study was to evaluate lhe efficiency of two gonadotrophins in induction of estrus in dairy goats. A total of 47 dairy goats were randomly divided according to breed into two treatments (T1 and T2). In both treatments, goats received intravaginal sponges containing 60 mg medroxy-progesterone acetate for six days and sub- vulvar administration of 22.5 mg of d-cloprostenol at the time of sponge insertion. In TI (n=23) and T2 (n=24), animaIs received intramuscuIar administration of 200 lU and 250 lU of eCG and hCG, respectively. After sponge removal, goats were monitored twice daily (06:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m.) with bucks. Animals were bred at lhe start of estrus and at each 12 hours interval until lhe end of estrus. Pregnancy was checked by ultrasonography 63 days after breeding. Percentage of animals in estrus did not differ (P>0.05) between TI (95.6%) and T2 (78.3%). There was no effect (P>0.05) of treatment on interval from sponge removal to lhe Start of estrus (IE) and duration of estrus (DE). The" average IE was 48.0 + 9.4h and 46.2+ 8.4h for eCG and hCG, respectively. The average DE was 20.7 + 11.9h and 18.8 + 9.0h for eCG and hCG, respectively. Pregnancy cate did not differ (P>0.05) between eCG (77.3%) and hCG (61.1%). Results of this study showed that estrus can be efficiently induced in female goats outside lhe breeding season with both eCG and hCG

Viability of transcervical embryo transfer in goats.
Embryo transfer consists in the deposition of the embryo in the recipient uterus. The results of recipient?s fertility vary widely depending on the origin of these embryos: fresh or cryopreserved and produced in vivo or in vitro. Typically, pregnancy rates ranging from 40 to 80% are reported. The objective of this study was to test the feasibility of non-surgical embryo transfer of goat fresh embryos.Proceedings of the 29th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Embryo Technology Society (SBTE); Gramado, RS, Brazil, August 20th to 23rd, 2015, and 31st Meeting of the European Embryo Transfer Association (AETE); Ghent, Belgium, September 11th and 12th, 2015. Estradiol route and non-surgical embryo recovery in synchronized Santa Inês ewes
Abstract: Animal surgery procedures are being progressively restricted worldwide in the context of embryo transfer. In small ruminants, the needs for development of alternative and efficient non-surgical techniques for embryo transfer have been emphasized. Non-surgical embryo recovery is well consolidated in Brazil in cattle and goats, while in sheep it remains a challenge. The aim of this study was to check the efficiency of different ways of estradiol benzoate administration on cervix dilation and embryo recovery in synchronized Santa Inês ewes. Considering that Santa Inês sheep have up to 1.3 lambs we can conclude that it is possible to perform efficient non-surgical embryo recovery in non-superovulated synchronized Santa Inês ewes, regardless the way of estradiol administration.Proceedings of the 29th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Embryo Technology Society (SBTE), Gramado, RS, Brazil, August, 2015 and 31st Meeting of the European Embryo Transfer Association (AETE), Ghent, Belgium, September 11th and 12th, 2015
