    The newly observed open-charm states in quark model

    Comparing the measured properties of the newly observed open-charm states D(2550), D(2600), D(2750), D(2760), D_{s1}(2710), D_{sJ}(2860), and D_{sJ}(3040) with our predicted spectroscopy and strong decays in a constituent quark model, we find that: (1) the D(2\,^1S_0) assignment to D(2550) remains open for its too broad width determined by experiment; (2) the D(2600) and Ds1(2710)D_{s1}(2710) can be identified as the 2\,^3S_1-1\,^3D_1 mixtures; (3) if the D(2760) and D(2750) are indeed the same resonance, they would be the D(1\,^3D_3); otherwise, they could be assigned as the D(1\,^3D_3) and D2(1D)D^\prime_2(1D), respectively; (4) the DsJ(2860)D_{sJ}(2860) could be either the Ds1(2710)D_{s1}(2710)'s partner or the D_s(1\,^3D_3); and (5) both the Ds1(2P)D_{s1}(2P) and Ds1(2P)D^\prime_{s1}(2P) interpretations for the DsJ(3040)D_{sJ}(3040) seem likely. The E1E1 and M1M1 radiative decays of these sates are also studied.     Measurement of Z0 decays to hadrons, and a precise determination of the number of neutrino species

    We have made a precise measurement of the cross section for e+e--->Z0-->hadrons with the L3 detector at LEP, covering the range from 88.28 to 95.04 GeV. From a fit to the Z0 mass, total width, and the hadronic cross section to be MZ0=91.160 +/- 0.024 (experiment) +/-0.030(LEP) GeV, [Gamma]Z0=2.539+/-0.054 GeV, and [sigma]h(MZ0)=29.5+/-0.7 nb. We also used the fit to the Z0 peak cross section and the width todetermine [Gamma]invisible=0.548+/-0.029 GeV, which corresponds to 3.29+/-0.17 species of light neutrinos.     A measurement of the Z0 leptonic partial widths and the vector and axial vector coupling constants

    We have measured the partial widths of the Z0 into lepton pairs, and the forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process e+e--->[mu]+[mu]- using the L3 detector at LEP. We obtain an average [Gamma]ll of 83.0+/-2.1+/-1.1 MeV.From this result and the asymmetry measurement, we extract the values of the vector and axial vector couplings of the Z0 to leptons: grmv=-0.066-0.027+0.046 and grmA= -0.495-0.007+0.007.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/28666/3/0000483.pd

    TaWRKY71, a WRKY Transcription Factor from Wheat, Enhances Tolerance to Abiotic Stress in Transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana

    Members of WRKY gene family encode transcription factors involved in plant developmental processes and response to biotic and abiotic stresses. In order to understand the function of the TaWRKY71 gene, a homologue gene was isolated and characterised in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotype TAM107. Tissue-specific gene expression profiles indicated that TaWRKY71 was constitutively expressed in roots, stems, leaves, stamen and pistil. The relative expression of TaWRKY71 was elucidated under ABA treatment and other abiotic stresses. In agreement with this, several putative cis-acting elements involved in ABA-response, drought-inducibility, low-temperature and heat response were detected in the promoter region of TaWRKY71. The function of TaWRKY71 was further determined by transforming Arabidopsis thaliana. Transgenic plants over-expressing TaWRKY71 displayed enhanced seed germination under ABA treatment and were tolerant to salt and drought stresses. These results indicate that TaWRKY71 gene might play important roles in seed germination and abiotic stress response

    Neuronal apoptosis mediated by inhibition of intracellular cholesterol transport: Microarray and proteomics analyses in cultured murine cortical neurons

    Studies suggest that cholesterol imbalance in the brain might be related to the development of neurological disorders. U18666A is a well-known amphiphile which inhibits intracellular cholesterol transport in treated cells. We have previously shown that U18666A leads to apoptosis and cholesterol accumulation in primary cortical neurons, which is associated with activation of caspases and calpains, hyperphosphorylation of tau, and increased oxidative stress markers. However, the mechanisms involved in U18666A-mediated apoptosis remain unknown. In this report, we sought to gain an insight into the molecular processes contributing to the neuronal apoptosis induced by U18666A. The microarray approach was used in conjunction with proteomics techniques to identify specific proteins which may serve as signature biomarkers during U18666A treatment. Eleven differentially expressed proteins were correlated at the gene expression level in a time-dependent manner. These proteins have been shown to play a role in lipid metabolism and transport, responses to cell death, protein folding and trafficking, and regulation of transcription. The identification of these differentially expressed proteins might provide a clue to decipher the intracellular biochemical changes during U18666A-mediated neuronal apoptosis. Our results provide, for the first time, a combined microarray and proteomics analysis of neuronal apoptosis mediated by inhibition of intracellular cholesterol transport. This new insight may greatly facilitate the study of neurodegenerative diseases

    Numerical simulation on penetration of rod projectile into YB-AD90 ceramic- composite target

    The depths of penetration and the dynamic processes of rod projectiles (tungsten or steel) into YB-AD90 ceramic-composite targets (45 steel and ceramic) are numerically simulated by Autodyn-2D. In simulation, the JH-2 (Johnson-Holmquist) constitutive model is used for ceramic samples, while Johnson-Cook constitutive model and Mie-Gruneisen equation of state are used for 45 steel and tungsten because metals are assumed not to be damaged under shock compression. The computed results are compared with the experiments for some important features during the dynamic penetration processes such as the shape transformation of projectile head, material fragmentation and penetration path collapse

    Textures and compressive properties of ferromagnetic shape-memory alloy Ni48Mn25Ga22Co5 prepared by isothermal forging process

    A ferromagnetic shape-memory alloy Ni48Mn25Ga22Co5 was prepared by the induction melting and isothermal forging process. Dynamic recrystallization occurs during the isothermal forging. The deformation texture was studied by the neutron diffraction technique. The main texture components consist of (110)[112] and (001)[100], which suggested that in-plane plastic flow anisotropy should be expected in the as-forged condition. The uniaxial compression fracture strain in the forged alloy reaches over 9.5%. The final room-temperature fracture of the polycrystalline Ni48Mn25Ga22Co5 is controlled mainly by intergranular mode.<br /
