    Magnetic field effect in hybrid nanostructures

    We examine the effect of the magnetic field on the proximity effect in nanostructures, self consistently using the Bogoliubov-deGennes formalism within the two dimensional extended Hubbard model. We calculate the local density of states and the pair amplitude. We study several nanostructures: superconductor - two dimensional electron gas, superconductor - ferromagnet. In these structures the magnetic field can be considered as a modulation parameter for the proximity effect.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

    Charge current in ferromagnet-superconductor junction with pairing state of broken time-reversal symmetry

    We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a ferromagnetic metal/insulator/superconductor using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formulation. Two possible states for the superconductor are considered with the time reversal symmetry (T\cal{T}) broken, i.e., dx2y2+isd_{x^2-y^2}+is, or dx2y2+idxyd_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}. In both cases the tunneling conductance within the gap is suppressed with the increase of the exchange interaction due to the suppression of the Andreev reflection. In the (dx2y2+is)(d_{x^2-y^2}+is)-wave case the peaks that exist when the ferromagnet is a normal metal in the amplitude of the s-wave component due to the bound state formation are reduced symmetrically, with the increase of the exchange field, while in the (dx2y2+idxy)(d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy})-wave case the residual density of states within the gap develops a dip around E=0 with the increase of the exchange field. These results would be useful to discriminate between T\cal{T}-broken pairing states near the surface in high-TcT_c superconductorsComment: 17 pages with 11 figure

    IMPROVING DATA QUALITY AND MANAGEMENT FOR REMOTE SENSING ANALYSIS: USE-CASES AND EMERGING RESEARCH QUESTIONS

    During the last decades satellite remote sensing has become an emerging technology producing big data for various application fields every day. However, data quality checking as well as the long-time management of data and models are still issues to be improved. They are indispensable to guarantee smooth data integration and the reproducibility of data analysis such as carried out by machine learning models. In this paper we clarify the emerging need of improving data quality and the management of data and models in a geospatial database management system before and during data analysis. In different use cases various processes of data preparation and quality checking, integration of data across different scales and references systems, efficient data and model management, and advanced data analysis are presented in detail. Motivated by these use cases we then discuss emerging research questions concerning data preparation and data quality checking, data management, model management and data integration. Finally conclusions drawn from the paper are presented and an outlook on future research work is given

    Josephson effect in d-wave superconductor junctions in a lattice model

    Josephson current between two d-wave superconductors is calculated by using a lattice model. Here we consider two types of junctions, i.e.i.e., the parallel junction and the mirror-type junction. The maximum Josephson current (Jc)(J_{c}) shows a wide variety of temperature (TT) dependence depending on the misorientation angles and the types of junctions. When the misorientation angles are not zero, the Josephson current shows the low-temperature anomaly because of a zero energy state (ZES) at the interfaces. In the case of mirror-type junctions, JcJ_c has a non monotonic temperature dependence. These results are consistent with the previous results based on the quasiclassical theory. [Y. Tanaka and S. B \textbf{56} (1997) 892.] On the other hand, we find that the ZES disappears in several junctions because of the Freidel oscillations of the wave function, which is peculiar to the lattice model.     Tunneling Spectra of Skutterudite PrOs_4Sb_{12}

    The tunnel conductance in normal-metal / insulator / PrOs4_4Sb12_{12} junctions is theoretically studied, where skutterudite PrOs4_4Sb12_{12} is considered to be an unconventional superconductor. The conductance are calculated for several pair potentials which have been proposed in recent works. The results show that the conductance is sensitive to the relation between the direction of electric currents and the position of point nodes. We also show that the conductance spectra often deviate from the shape of the bulk density of states and that the sub gap spectra have peak structures in the case of the spin-triplet pair potentials. The results indicate that the tunnel conductance is a useful tool to obtain an information of the pairing symmetry.Comment: 9 page

    Wetlands for wastewater treatment and subsequent recycling of treated effluent : a review

    Due to water scarcity challenges around the world, it is essential to think about non-conventional water resources to address the increased demand in clean freshwater. Environmental and public health problems may result from insufficient provision of sanitation and wastewater disposal facilities. Because of this, wastewater treatment and recycling methods will be vital to provide sufficient freshwater in the coming decades, since water resources are limited and more than 70% of water are consumed for irrigation purposes. Therefore, the application of treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation has much potential, especially when incorporating the reuse of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous, which are essential for plant production. Among the current treatment technologies applied in urban wastewater reuse for irrigation, wetlands were concluded to be the one of the most suitable ones in terms of pollutant removal and have advantages due to both low maintenance costs and required energy. Wetland behavior and efficiency concerning wastewater treatment is mainly linked to macrophyte composition, substrate, hydrology, surface loading rate, influent feeding mode, microorganism availability, and temperature. Constructed wetlands are very effective in removing organics and suspended solids, whereas the removal of nitrogen is relatively low, but could be improved by using a combination of various types of constructed wetlands meeting the irrigation reuse standards. The removal of phosphorus is usually low, unless special media with high sorption capacity are used. Pathogen removal from wetland effluent to meet irrigation reuse standards is a challenge unless supplementary lagoons or hybrid wetland systems are used

    A study of correlation between seismicity and mental health: Crete, 2008–2010

    We compared the number of M > 2 earthquakes in an area, including the island of Crete, Greece, to the number of admissions to the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit of the University of Crete (IPU/UoC), during the period 2008–2010. We found that when earthquakes with M 6.4 occurred in the region examined, the number of monthly admissions to the Acute Care Unit of the IPU/UoC, NAA, reached lowest values, whereas this number increased when the monthly number NE of small (M < 3) earthquakes increased. We also found a positive correlation between the total number of monthly admissions NA and NE (r = 0.601/P = 0.001). When a daily resolution analysis was performed for the month with the highest value of NE, we found that an abrupt increase in the number of small earthquakes was followed by an increase in the number of admissions after ∼2 days (during that month, from a total of 71 patients, 38/10 people were diagnosed with schizophrenia/bipolar disorder). We hypothesize that seismic activity might be a significant contributing factor influencing the frequency of admissions of psychotic disorders in Crete in the period 2008–2010 and that the beneficial/adverse effects are related to the anomalous electric field/extra low frequency–ultra low frequency emissions
