Stochastic heating of a molecular nanomagnet
We study the excitation dynamics of a single molecular nanomagnet by static
and pulsed magnetic fields. Based on a stability analysis of the classical
magnetization dynamics we identify analytically the fields parameters for which
the energy is stochastically pumped into the system in which case the
magnetization undergoes diffusively and irreversibly a large angle deflection.
An approximate analytical expression for the diffusion constant in terms of the
fields parameters is given and assessed by full numerical calculations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Exciton lifetime in InAs/GaAs quantum dot molecules
The exciton lifetimes in arrays of InAs/GaAs vertically coupled quantum
dot pairs have been measured by time-resolved photoluminescence. A considerable
reduction of by up to a factor of 2 has been observed as compared
to a quantum dots reference, reflecting the inter-dot coherence. Increase of
the molecular coupling strength leads to a systematic decrease of with
decreasing barrier width, as for wide barriers a fraction of structures shows
reduced coupling while for narrow barriers all molecules appear to be well
coupled. The coherent excitons in the molecules gain the oscillator strength of
the excitons in the two separate quantum dots halving the exciton lifetime.
This superradiance effect contributes to the previously observed increase of
the homogeneous exciton linewidth, but is weaker than the reduction of .
This shows that as compared to the quantum dots reference pure dephasing
becomes increasingly important for the molecules
Soil Drying Effects on Soil Strength and Depth of Hardpan Layers as Determined from Cone Index Data
Site-specific detection of a soil hardpan is an important step in precision farming. Different methods have been developed including the ASABE standard soil cone penetrometer to detect presence of hardpan layers. Most of the newly developed methods use results obtained by a soil cone penetrometer as a reference to validate their potential. Soil factors, mainly soil moisture and bulk density, may influence the cone index measurement and the prediction of the relative strength and depth of the hardpan layer. The effects of soil drying on hardpan characterizing attributes of peak cone index, depth to the peak cone index and depth to the top of the hardpan layer were studied for three compaction levels on a Norfolk sandy loam soil in a soil bin. The soil in the bin was wetted to near saturation and then subjected to four levels of soil drying. A multiple-probe soil cone penetrometer (MPSCP) was used to measure soil cone index. The results showed that soil drying had a significant effect on peak cone index for the single pass compaction (1.78 Mg m-3 within hardpan) and the double pass compaction (1.83 Mg m-3 within hardpan). The peak cone index increased two-fold and 1.3 times due to soil drying from ‘day-1’ to ‘day-4’ for the single pass compaction and for the double compaction, respectively. The depths to the top of the hardpan determined from the depth to the peak cone index and the depth to the top of the hardpan showed a statistically significant decreasing trend for the single pass compaction. The differences, however, were too small (< 2 cm) to justify varying prescription tillage depth due to soil drying
Correlated Photon-Pair Emission from a Charged Single Quantum Dot
The optical creation and recombination of charged biexciton and trion
complexes in an (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dot is investigated by
micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy. Photon cross-correlation measurements
demonstrate the temporally correlated decay of charged biexciton and trion
states. Our calculations provide strong evidence for radiative decay from the
excited trion state which allows for a deeper insight into the spin
configurations and their dynamics in these systems.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publicatio
On single and double soft behaviors in NLSM
In this paper, we study the single and double soft behaviors of tree level
off-shell currents and on-shell amplitudes in nonlinear sigma model(NLSM). We
first propose and prove the leading soft behavior of the tree level currents
with a single soft particle. In the on-shell limit, this single soft emission
becomes the Adler's zero. Then we establish the leading and sub-leading soft
behaviors of tree level currents with two adjacent soft particles. With a
careful analysis of the on-shell limit, we obtain the double soft behaviors of
on-shell amplitudes where the two soft particles are adjacent to each other. By
applying Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) relation, we further obtain the leading and
sub-leading behaviors of amplitudes with two nonadjacent soft particles.Comment: 41 pages, 6 tables, 9 figures, minor revised, more content about

Multi-epoch VLBA observations of 3C 66A
We present the results of six-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA)
observations of 3C~66A. The high-resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometer
(VLBI) maps obtained at multi-frequency (2.3, 8.4, and 22.2 GHz) simultaneously
enabled us to identify the brightest compact component with the core. We find
that the spectrum of the core can be reasonably fitted by the synchrotron
self-absorption model. Our VLBA maps show that the jet of 3C~66A has two
bendings at about 1.2 and 4 mas from the core. We also give possible
identifications of our jet components with the components in previous VLBA
observations by analysing their proper motions. We find consistent differences
of the position from the core in one component between different frequencies at
six epochs.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, received 30 January 2007, accepted 22 March 200
Quasi-simultaneous five-frequency VLBA observations of PKS 0528+134
We present results of Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of PKS
0528+134 at five frequencies (2.3, 5.0, 8.4, 15.4, and 22.2 GHz). These
quasi-simultaneous data enable us to study the spectral distribution of Very
Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) components for the first time in this
highly variable source, from which the central compact core is identified. Our
observations indicate that there are two bendings for the jet motion at parsec
scale. We provide an approximate spatial fit to the curved jet trajectory using
the Steffen et al. (\cite{Steffen95}) helical model. We further investigate the
proper motions of three jet components, which all show superluminal motion. At
high frequencies (15.4 and 22.2 GHz) we detected a new component, which is
estimated to be related to a radio burst peaking at about 2000.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 3 table
Renormalization : A number theoretical model
We analyse the Dirichlet convolution ring of arithmetic number theoretic
functions. It turns out to fail to be a Hopf algebra on the diagonal, due to
the lack of complete multiplicativity of the product and coproduct. A related
Hopf algebra can be established, which however overcounts the diagonal. We
argue that the mechanism of renormalization in quantum field theory is modelled
after the same principle. Singularities hence arise as a (now continuously
indexed) overcounting on the diagonals. Renormalization is given by the map
from the auxiliary Hopf algebra to the weaker multiplicative structure, called
Hopf gebra, rescaling the diagonals.Comment: 15 pages, extended version of talks delivered at SLC55 Bertinoro,Sep

Dynamical electron transport through a nanoelectromechanical wire in a magnetic field
We investigate dynamical transport properties of interacting electrons moving
in a vibrating nanoelectromechanical wire in a magnetic field. We have built an
exactly solvable model in which electric current and mechanical oscillation are
treated fully quantum mechanically on an equal footing. Quantum mechanically
fluctuating Aharonov-Bohm phases obtained by the electrons cause nontrivial
contribution to mechanical vibration and electrical conduction of the wire. We
demonstrate our theory by calculating the admittance of the wire which are
influenced by the multiple interplay between the mechanical and the electrical
energy scales, magnetic field strength, and the electron-electron interaction
Twistors, Harmonics and Holomorphic Chern-Simons
We show that the off-shell N=3 action of N=4 super Yang-Mills can be written
as a holomorphic Chern-Simons action whose Dolbeault operator is constructed
from a complex-real (CR) structure of harmonic space. We also show that the
local space-time operators can be written as a Penrose transform on the coset
SU(3)/(U(1) \times U(1)). We observe a strong similarity to ambitwistor space
constructions.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures, v2: replaced with published version, v3: Added
