Simplifying Algebra in Feynman Graphs, Part III: Massive Vectors

A T-dualized selfdual inspired formulation of massive vector fields coupled to arbitrary matter is generated; subsequently its perturbative series modeling a spontaneously broken gauge theory is analyzed. The new Feynman rules and external line factors are chirally minimized in the sense that only one type of spin index occurs in the rules. Several processes are examined in detail and the cross-sections formulated in this approach. A double line formulation of the Lorentz algebra for Feynman diagrams is produced in this formalism, similar to color ordering, which follows from a spin ordering of the Feynman rules. The new double line formalism leads to further minimization of gauge invariant scattering in perturbation theory. The dualized electroweak model is also generated.Comment: 39 pages, LaTeX, 8 figure

From lightcone actions to maximally supersymmetric amplitudes

In this article actions for N=4 SYM and N=8 supergravity are formulated in terms of a chiral superfield, which contains only the physical degrees of freedom of either theory. In these new actions, which originate from the lightcone superspace, the supergravity cubic vertex is the square of the gauge theory one (omitting the color structures). Amplitude calculations using the corresponding Feynman supergraph rules are tedious, but can be simplified by choosing a preferred superframe. Recursive calculations of all MHV amplitudes in N=4 SYM and the four-point N=8 supergravity amplitude are shown to agree with the known results and connections to the BCFW recursion relations are pointed out. Finally, the new path integrals are discussed in the context of the double-copy property relating N=4 SYM theory to N=8 supergravity.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figures, v2: title modified, published versio

Supertwistor space for 6D maximal super Yang-Mills

    Get PDF
6D maximal super Yang-Mills on-shell amplitudes are formulated in superspace using 6 dimensional twistors. The 3,4,5-point tree amplitudes are obtained by supersymmetrizing their bosonic counterparts and confirmed through the BCFW construction. In contrast to 4D this superspace is non-chiral, reflecting the fact that one cannot differentiate MHV from MHVˉ\bar{{\rm MHV}} in 6D. Combined with unitarity methods, this superspace should be useful for the study of multi-loop D dimensional maximal super Yang-Mills and gravity amplitudes. Furthermore, the non-chiral nature gives a natural framework for an off-shell construction. We show this by matching our result with off-shell D=4 N=4 super Yang-Mills amplitudes, expressed in projective superspace.Comment: 6 figures 28 pages. with better sign

Sterically restricted tin phosphines, stabilized by weak intramolecular donor-acceptor interactions

Funding: Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)Four related sterically restricted pen-substituted acenaphthenes have been prepared containing mixed tin phosphorus moieties in the proximal 5,6-positions (Acenap[SnR3][(PPr2)-Pr-i]; Acenap = acenaphthene-5,6-diyl; R-3 = Ph-3 (1), Ph2Cl (2), Me2Cl (3), Bu2Cl (4)). The degree of intramolecular P-Sn bonding within the series was investigated by X-ray crystallography, solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP/SBKJC/PCM) calculations. All members of the series adopt a conformation such that the phosphorus lone pair is located directly opposite the tin center, promoting an intramolecular donor acceptor P -> Sn type interaction. The extent of covalent bonding between Sn and P is found to be much greater in triorganotin chlorides 2-4 in comparison with the triphenyl derivative 1. Coordination of a highly electronegative chlorine atom naturally increases the Lewis acidity of the tin center, enhancing the Ip(P)-sigma*(Sn-Y) donor acceptor 3c-4e type interaction, as indicated by conspicuously short Sn-P peri distances and significant (1)J(P-31,Sn-119) spin spin coupling constants (SSCCs) in the range 740-754 Hz. Evidence supporting the presence of this interaction was also found in solid-state NMR spectra of some of the compounds which exhibit an indirect spin spin coupling on the same order of magnitude as observed in solution. DFT calculations confirm the increased covalent bonding between P and Sn in 2-4, with notable WBIs of ca. 0.35 obtained, in comparison to 0.1 in 1.PostprintPeer reviewe

Smoking in asthma is associated with elevated levels of corticosteroid resistant sputum cytokines—an exploratory study

<p>Background: Current cigarette smoking is associated with reduced acute responses to corticosteroids and worse clinical outcomes in stable chronic asthma. The mechanism by which current smoking promotes this altered behavior is currently unclear. Whilst cytokines can induce corticosteroid insensitivity in-vitro, how current and former smoking affects airway cytokine concentrations and their responses to oral corticosteroids in stable chronic asthma is unclear.</p> <p>Objectives: To examine blood and sputum cytokine concentrations in never, ex and current smokers with asthma before and after oral corticosteroids.</p> <p>Methods: Exploratory study utilizing two weeks of oral dexamethasone (equivalent to 40 mg/day prednisolone) in 22 current, 21 never and 10 ex-smokers with asthma. Induced sputum supernatant and plasma was obtained before and after oral dexamethasone. 25 cytokines were measured by multiplex microbead system (Invitrogen, UK) on a Luminex platform.</p> <p>Results: Smokers with asthma had elevated sputum cytokine interleukin (IL) -6, -7, and -12 concentrations compared to never smokers with asthma. Few sputum cytokine concentrations changed in response to dexamethasone IL-17 and IFNα increased in smokers, CCL4 increased in never smokers and CCL5 and CXCL10 reduced in ex-smokers with asthma. Ex-smokers with asthma appeared to have evidence of an ongoing corticosteroid resistant elevation of cytokines despite smoking cessation. Several plasma cytokines were lower in smokers wi</p> <p>Conclusion: Cigarette smoking in asthma is associated with a corticosteroid insensitive increase in multiple airway cytokines. Distinct airway cytokine profiles are present in current smokers and never smokers with asthma and could provide an explanatory mechanism for the altered clinical behavior observed in smokers with asthma.</p&gt

Simplifying Algebra in Feynman Graphs, Part I:Spinors

We present a general formalism for simplifying manipulations of spin indices of massless and massive spinors and vectors in Feynman diagrams. The formalism is based on covariantly reducing the number of field components in the action in favor of chiral/self-dual fields. In this paper we concentrate on calculational simplifications involving fermions in gauge theories by eliminating half of the components of Dirac spinors. Some results are: (1) We find reference momenta for massless fermions analogous to those used for external gauge bosons. (2) Many of the known supersymmetry identities (tree and one-loop) are seen in a simple manner from the graphs. (3) Manipulations with external line factrs for massive fermions are unnecessary. (4) Some of the simplifications for nearly maximally helicity violating gluonic amplitudes are built into the Feynman rules.Comment: 14 pg., plain tex, references adde

Spinor formalism for massive fields with half-integral spin

In this article, we extend the %Weyl-van der Waerden spinor technique for calculating helicity amplitudes to general massive fields of half-integer spins. We find that the little group generators can be represented as first-order differential operators in the spinor formalism. We use the spinor forms of the generators to get the explicit form of the massive fields of any spin and any helicity. We also deal with the three-particle S-matrix by these spinor form generators, and find that we are able to extend the explicit form of the three-particle vertex obtained by Benincasa and Cachazo to the massive case. We present the explicit expressions for the amplitudes with external particles of the lowest helicities up to -3/2. Group theory, in the form of raising operators of the little group, then dictates other amplitudes with higher helicity in the same spin multiplets. The formalism allows, in principle, to determine the electromagnetic form-factors of charged particles of arbitrary helicities, without additional assumptions about the underlying lagrangian. We find that restrictions which follow from gauge and Lorentz invariance are nearly as restrictive as in the massless case.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure

Rotating Black Hole, Twistor-String and Spinning Particle

We discuss basic features of the model of spinning particle based on the Kerr solution. It contains a very nontrivial {\it real} stringy structure consisting of the Kerr circular string and an axial stringy system. We consider also the complex and twistorial structures of the Kerr geometry and show that there is a {\it complex} twistor-string built of the complex N=2 chiral string with a twistorial (x,θ)(x,\theta) structure. By imbedding into the real Minkowski M4\bf M^4, the N=2 supersymmetry is partially broken and string acquires the open ends. Orientifolding this string, we identify the chiral and antichiral structures. Target space of this string is equivalent to the Witten's `diagonal' of the CP3×CP3.\bf CP^3\times CP^{*3}.Comment: 19 p. 4 figures, extended version of hep-th/0412065, based on the talk given at the Conference `Symmetries and Spin'(SPIN-Praha-2004) July 200

Global conformal anomaly in N=2 string

We show the existence of a global anomaly in the one-loop graphs of N=2 string theory, defined by sewing tree amplitudes, unless spacetime supersymmetry is imposed. The anomaly is responsible for the non-vanishing maximally helicity violating amplitudes. The supersymmetric completion of the N=2 string spectrum is formulated by extending the previous cohomological analysis with an external spin factor; the target space-time spin-statistics of these individual fields in a selfdual background are compatible with previous cohomological analysis as fields of arbitrary spin may be bosonized into one another. We further analyze duality relations between the open and closed string amplitudes and demonstrate this in the supersymmetric extension of the target space-time theory through the insertion of zero-momentum operators.Comment: 29 pages, LaTeX, one figur

    Twistors, Harmonics and Holomorphic Chern-Simons

We show that the off-shell N=3 action of N=4 super Yang-Mills can be written as a holomorphic Chern-Simons action whose Dolbeault operator is constructed from a complex-real (CR) structure of harmonic space. We also show that the local space-time operators can be written as a Penrose transform on the coset SU(3)/(U(1) \times U(1)). We observe a strong similarity to ambitwistor space constructions.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures, v2: replaced with published version, v3: Added referenc
