    Right-Handed New Physics Remains Strangely Beautiful

    Current data on CP violation in B_d -> eta' K_S and B_d -> phi K_S, taken literally, suggest new physics contributions in b -> s transitions. Despite a claim to the contrary, we point out that right-handed operators with a single weak phase can account for both deviations thanks to the two-fold ambiguity in the extraction of the weak phase from the corresponding CP-asymmetry. This observation is welcome since large mixing in the right-handed sector is favored by many GUT models and frameworks which address the flavor puzzle.     Entanglement-assisted quantum turbo codes

    An unexpected breakdown in the existing theory of quantum serial turbo coding is that a quantum convolutional encoder cannot simultaneously be recursive and non-catastrophic. These properties are essential for quantum turbo code families to have a minimum distance growing with blocklength and for their iterative decoding algorithm to converge, respectively. Here, we show that the entanglement-assisted paradigm simplifies the theory of quantum turbo codes, in the sense that an entanglement-assisted quantum (EAQ) convolutional encoder can possess both of the aforementioned desirable properties. We give several examples of EAQ convolutional encoders that are both recursive and non-catastrophic and detail their relevant parameters. We then modify the quantum turbo decoding algorithm of Poulin , in order to have the constituent decoders pass along only extrinsic information to each other rather than a posteriori probabilities as in the decoder of Poulin , and this leads to a significant improvement in the performance of unassisted quantum turbo codes. Other simulation results indicate that entanglement-assisted turbo codes can operate reliably in a noise regime 4.73 dB beyond that of standard quantum turbo codes, when used on a memoryless depolarizing channel. Furthermore, several of our quantum turbo codes are within 1 dB or less of their hashing limits, so that the performance of quantum turbo codes is now on par with that of classical turbo codes. Finally, we prove that entanglement is the resource that enables a convolutional encoder to be both non-catastrophic and recursive because an encoder acting on only information qubits, classical bits, gauge qubits, and ancilla qubits cannot simultaneously satisfy them. © 1963-2012 IEEE

    Can there be any new physics in b -> d penguins

    We analyze the possibility of observing new physics effects in the b→db \to d penguin amplitudes. For this purpose, we consider the decay mode B→K0Kˉ0B \to K^0 \bar K^0 , which has only b→db \to d penguin contributions. Using the QCD factorization approach, we find very tiny CP violating effects in the standard model for this process. Furthermore, we show that the minimal supersymmetric standard model with LRLR mass insertion and R-parity violating supersymmetric model can provide substantial CP violation effects. Observation of sizable CP violation in this mode would be a clear signal of new physics.Comment: Published versio

    Knowledge, Perception and Attitude of Community Pharmacists towards Generic Medicines in Karachi, Pakistan: A Qualitative Insight

    Purpose: In an era of escalating healthcare costs and ageing population, there is a need for costeffective measures. This study was aimed to investigate the knowledge, perception and attitude of community pharmacists towards generic medicines. Methods: A  qualitative methodology was adopted. Snowball sampling technique was used to identify eight community pharmacists. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the pharmacists until the point of saturation was obtained. The interviews, which were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim, were evaluated by thematic content analysis and further verified by other authors’ analyses. Results: Thematic content analysis identified three major themes: knowledge of generic medicines,perception towards generic medicines, and attitude towards generic medicines. All the pharmacist  showed good understanding and positive perception towards generic medicines. Mixed responses were observed regarding dispensing of locally manufactured medicines. Low cost was cited as the major determinant in dispensing locally manufactured generics. Conclusion: The current study showed good knowledge and perception towards generic medicines among community pharmacists in Karachi, Pakistan. It also highlighted mixed attitudes towards generic medicine dispensing. A 24-hour mandatory presence of professionally qualified pharmacists in community pharmacies can boost the confidence of doctors in pharmacists and enhance generic substitution.Keywords:   Community pharmacist, Generic Medicine, Pakistan, Qualitative methodolog

    The epidemic of HIV/AIDS in developing countries; the current scenario in Pakistan

    HIV (Human Immunodeficiency virus) causes (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) AIDS, in which the immune system of body totally fails to develop any defense against the foreign invaders. Infection with HIV occurs by transfer of blood, semen, and breast milk. HIV/AIDS is a global problem and it results nearly 25 million deaths worldwide. Developing countries like Pakistan have issues regarding Public Health. Currently, epidemic of HIV/AIDS is established in Pakistan and there is a threat of an expanded HIV/AIDS outbreak in the country. The major reason is that population is engaging in high-risk practices, low awareness about HIV/AIDS, and treacherous blood transfusion practices. A supplementary threat to Pakistan is India because both sharing a border and India is facing a rapidly growing HIV/AIDS epidemic. Local NGOs, National and International organizations are warning that in near future Pakistan may experiences bad situation regarding HIV/AIDS

    A Multivariate Training Technique with Event Reweighting

    An event reweighting technique incorporated in multivariate training algorithm has been developed and tested using the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Boosted Decision Trees (BDT). The event reweighting training are compared to that of the conventional equal event weighting based on the ANN and the BDT performance. The comparison is performed in the context of the physics analysis of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will explore the fundamental nature of matter and the basic forces that shape our universe. We demonstrate that the event reweighting technique provides an unbiased method of multivariate training for event pattern recognition.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure

    Toward Unified Cloud Service Discovery for Enhanced Service Identification

    Nowadays cloud services are being increasingly used by professionals. A wide variety of cloud services are being introduced every day, and each of which is designed to serve a set of specific purposes. Currently, there is no cloud service specific search engine or a comprehensive directory that is available online. Therefore, cloud service customers mainly select cloud services based on the word of mouth, which is of low accuracy and lacks expressiveness. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive cloud service search engine to enable users to perform personalized search based on certain criteria including their own intention of use, cost and the features provided. Specifically, our cloud service search engine focuses on: 1) extracting and identifying cloud services automatically from the Web; 2) building a unified model to represent the cloud service features; and 3) prototyping a search engine for online cloud services. To this end, we propose a novel Service Detection and Tracking (SDT) model for modeling Cloud services. Then based on the SDT model, a cloud service search engine (CSSE) is implemented for helping effectively discover cloud services, relevant service features and service costs that are provided by the cloud service providers

    Pharmacists and telemedicine: an innovative model fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

    The lack of access to safe medicines and quality healthcare services in peri-urban and rural areas is a major challenge driving a health system to innovate new models of care. This commentary will discuss the implementation and impact of the “Guddi baji” tele-pharmacy model, a project piloted by doctHERs, one of Pakistan’s leading telemedicine organizations. This innovative model has described the reintegration of women into the workforce by leveraging technology to improve the level of primary health care services and contributes to safe medication practice in a remote area. Our intervention proposed the deployment of technology-enabled, female frontline health workers known as the Guddi baji (meaning The Good Sister) in a rural village. They serve as an “access point to health care” that is linked to a remotely located health care professional; a licensed doctor or a pharmacist within this model

    Non-factorizable Contributions to B→ππB \to \pi\pi Decays

    We investigate to what extent the experimental information on B→ππB \to \pi\pi branching fractions and CP asymmetries can be used to better understand the QCD dynamics in these decays. For this purpose we decompose the independent isospin amplitudes into factorizable and non-factorizable contributions. The former can be estimated within the framework of QCD factorization for exclusive BB decays. The latter vanish in the heavy-quark limit, mb→∞m_b \to \infty, and are treated as unknown hadronic parameters. We discuss at some length in which way the non-factorizable contributions are treated in different theoretical and phenomenological frameworks. We point out the potential differences between the phenomenological treatment of power-corrections in the ``BBNS approach'', and the appearance of power -suppressed operators in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). On that basis we define a handful of different (but generic) scenarios where the non-factorizable part of isospin amplitudes is parametrized in terms of three or four unknowns, which can be constrained by data. We also give some short discussion on the implications of our analysis for B→πKB \to \pi K decays. In particular, since non-factorizable QCD effects in B→ππB \to \pi \pi may be large, we cannot exclude sizeable non-factorizable effects, which violate SU(3)FSU(3)_F flavour symmetry, or even isospin symmetry (via long-distance QED effects). This may help to explain certain puzzles in connection with isospin-violating observables in B→πKB \to \pi K decays.Comment: published version, minor correction
