Scattering of non-uniform incident fields by long cylinders
Copyright University of BremenWe investigate experimentally far-field scattering from cylinders with illumination non-uniform along the axis of the cylinder. Scattered intensity as a function of angle in two orthogonal directions is examined. Variation along the scattering angle is found to be little affected by the illumination profile. However, variation in the transverse direction follows closely the Fourier transform of the illumination pattern and reproduces the angular distribution of the incident wave. These finding apply to circular as well as hexagonal cross-section cylinders
A Modification to the Goldstein RadarInterferogram Filter
We present a modification to the adaptive Goldstein radar interferogram filter which improves the quality of interferometry products. The proposed approach makes the Goldstein filter parameter alpha dependent on coherence, suchthat incoherent areas are filtered more than coherent areas. This modification minimizes loss of signal while still reducing the level of noise
Collective modes of asymmetric nuclear matter in Quantum HadroDynamics
We discuss a fully relativistic Landau Fermi liquid theory based on the
Quantum Hadro-Dynamics () effective field picture of Nuclear Matter
({\it NM}).
From the linearized kinetic equations we get the dispersion relations of the
propagating collective modes. We focus our attention on the dynamical effects
of the interplay between scalar and vector channel contributions. A beautiful
``mirror'' structure in the form of the dynamical response in the
isoscalar/isovector degree of freedom is revealed, with a complete parallelism
in the role respectively played by the compressibility and the symmetry energy.
All that strongly supports the introduction of an explicit coupling to the
scalar-isovector channel of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. In particular we
study the influence of this coupling (to a -meson-like effective field)
on the collective response of asymmetric nuclear matter (). Interesting
contributions are found on the propagation of isovector-like modes at normal
density and on an expected smooth transition to isoscalar-like oscillations at
high baryon density. Important ``chemical'' effects on the neutron-proton
structure of the mode are shown. For dilute we have the isospin
distillation mechanism of the unstable isoscalar-like oscillations, while at
high baryon density we predict an almost pure neutron wave structure of the
propagating sounds.Comment: 18 pages (LATEX), 8 Postscript figures, uses "epsfig
The Liquid-Gas Phase Transitions in a Multicomponent Nuclear System with Coulomb and Surface Effects
The liquid-gas phase transition is studied in a multi-component nuclear
system using a local Skyrme interaction with Coulomb and surface effects. Some
features are qualitatively the same as the results of Muller and Serot which
uses relativistic mean field without Coulomb and surface effects. Surface
tension brings the coexistance binodal surface to lower pressure. The Coulomb
interaction makes the binodal surface smaller and cause another pair of binodal
points at low pressure and large proton fraction with less protons in liquid
phase and more protons in gas phase.Comment: 20 pages including 7 postscript figure
Gossypol Interferes with Both Type I and Type II Topoisomerase Activities Without Generating Strand Breaks
A considerable number of agents with chemotherapeutic potentials reported over the past years were shown to interfere with the reactions of DNA topoisomerases, the essential enzymes that regulate conformational changes in DNA topology. Gossypol, a naturally occurring bioactive phytochemical is a chemopreventive agent against various types of cancer cell growth with a reported activity on mammalian topoisomerase II. The compounds targeting topoisomerases vary in their mode of action; class I compounds act by stabilizing covalent topoisomerase-DNA complexes resulting in DNA strand breaks while class II compounds interfere with the catalytic function of topoisomerases without generating strand breaks. In this study, we report Gossypol as the interfering agent with type I topoisomerases as well. We also carried out an extensive set of assays to analyze the type of interference manifested by Gossypol on DNA topoisomerases. Our results strongly suggest that Gossypol is a potential class II inhibitor as it blocked DNA topoisomerase reactions with no consequently formed strand breaks. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York
A novel approach to Isoscaling: the role of the order parameter m = (N-Z)/A
Isoscaling is derived within a recently proposed modified Fisher model where
the free energy near the critical point is described by the Landau O(m^6)
theory. In this model m = (N-Z)/A is the order parameter, a consequence of (one
of) the symmetries of the nuclear Hamiltonian. Within this framework we show
that isoscaling depends mainly on this order parameter through the 'external
(conjugate) field' H. The external field is just given by the difference in
chemical potentials of the neutrons and protons of the two sources. To
distinguish from previously employed isoscaling relationships, this approach is
dubbed: m - scaling. We discuss the relationship between this framework and the
standard isoscaling formalism and point out some substantial differences in
interpretation of experimental results which might result. These should be
investigated further both theoretically and experimentally.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Extended Superscaling of Electron Scattering from Nuclei
An extended study of scaling of the first and second kinds for inclusive
electron scattering from nuclei is presented. Emphasis is placed on the
transverse response in the kinematic region lying above the quasielastic peak.
In particular, for the region in which electroproduction of resonances is
expected to be important, approximate scaling of the second kind is observed
and the modest breaking of it is shown probably to be due to the role played by
an inelastic version of the usual scaling variable.Comment: LaTeX, 36 pages including 5 color postscript figures and 4 postscript

Phase transitions of hadronic to quark matter at finite T and \mu_B
The phase transition of hadronic to quark matter and the boundaries of the
mixed hadron-quark coexistence phase are studied within the two Equation of
State (EoS) model. The relativistic effective mean field approach with constant
and density dependent meson-nucleon couplings is used to describe hadronic
matter, and the MIT Bag model is adopted to describe quark matter. The
boundaries of the mixed phase for different Bag constants are obtained solving
the Gibbs equations.
We notice that the dependence on the Bag parameter of the critical
temperatures (at zero chemical potential) can be well reproduced by a fermion
ultrarelativistic quark gas model, without contribution from the hadron part.
At variance the critical chemical potentials (at zero temperature) are very
sensitive to the EoS of the hadron sector. Hence the study of the hadronic EoS
is much more relevant for the determination of the transition to the
quark-gluon-plasma at finite baryon density and low-T. Moreover in the low
temperature and finite chemical potential region no solutions of the Gibbs
conditions are existing for small Bag constant values, B < (135 MeV)^4. Isospin
effects in asymmetric matter appear relevant in the high chemical potential
regions at lower temperatures, of interest for the inner core properties of
neutron stars and for heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies.Comment: 24 pages and 16 figures (revtex4
