    Correlation between morphology and transport properties of quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene

    We investigate the morphology of quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG) formed at several temperatures by hydrogen intercalation and discuss its relationship with transport properties. Features corresponding to incomplete hydrogen intercalation at the graphene-substrate interface are observed by scanning tunneling microscopy on QFMLG formed at 600 and 800{\deg}C. They contribute to carrier scattering as charged impurities. Voids in the SiC substrate and wrinkling of graphene appear at 1000{\deg}C, and they decrease the carrier mobility significantly

    A case with concurrent duplication, triplication, and uniparental isodisomy at 1q42.12-qter supporting microhomology-mediated break-induced replication model for replicative rearrangements

    Background: Complex genomic rearrangements (CGRs) consisting of interstitial triplications in conjunction with uniparental isodisomy (isoUPD) have rarely been reported in patients with multiple congenital anomalies (MCA)/intellectual disability (ID). One-ended DNA break repair coupled with microhomology-mediated break-induced replication (MMBIR) has been recently proposed as a possible mechanism giving rise to interstitial copy number gains and distal isoUPD, although only a few cases providing supportive evidence in human congenital diseases with MCA have been documented. Case presentation: Here, we report on the chromosomal microarray (CMA)-based identification of the first known case with concurrent interstitial duplication at 1q42.12-q42.2 and triplication at 1q42.2-q43 followed by isoUPD for the remainder of chromosome 1q (at 1q43-qter). In distal 1q duplication/triplication overlapping with 1q42.12-q43, variable clinical features have been reported, and our 25-year-old patient with MCA/ID presented with some of these frequently described features. Further analyses including the precise mapping of breakpoint junctions within the CGR in a sequence level suggested that the CGR found in association with isoUPD in our case is a triplication with flanking duplications, characterized as a triplication with a particularly long duplication-inverted triplication-duplication (DUP-TRP/INV-DUP) structure. Because microhomology was observed in both junctions between the triplicated region and the flanking duplicated regions, our case provides supportive evidence for recently proposed replication-based mechanisms, such as MMBIR, underlying the formation of CGRs + isoUPD implicated in chromosomal disorders. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of CGRs + isoUPD observed in 1q and having DUP-TRP/INV-DUP structure with a long proximal duplication, which supports MMBIR-based model for genomic rearrangements. Molecular cytogenetic analyses using CMA containing single-nucleotide polymorphism probes with further analyses of the breakpoint junctions are recommended in cases suspected of having complex chromosomal abnormalities based on discrepancies between clinical and conventional cytogenetic findings

    Adult intussusception is rare and most often associated with cancer. We report a case of intussuscepted sigmoid colon into the rectum protruding from the anus of a 47-year-old woman. The cause of the intussusception was sigmoid colon cancer. We removed the intussuscepted part of the sigmoid colon as well as the rectum and regional lymph nodes. The patient recovered uneventfully and there has been no evidence of recurrence of the cancer

    Effect of Resveratrol Dimers and Tetramers Isolated from Vitaceous and Dipterocarpaceous Plants on Human SIRT1 Enzyme Activity

    SIRT1 is a mammalian ortholog of the yeast enzyme Sir2, which is an NAD+-dependent deacetylase of histones, p53, FOXO, NF-κB, PGC-1α, and other transcription factors. The Sir2 protein is reported as a longevity protein in yeast. Resveratrol, a polyphenol isolated from various types of plant families, particularly the Vitaceae family, is a known naturally occurring SIRT1 activator. In this study, we evaluated the effects of four types of resveratrol dimers and four types of tetramers isolated from vitaceous plants, and one type of resveratrol tetramer isolated from a dipterocarpaceous plant on purified human SIRT1 enzyme activity. Of the resveratrol dimers examined, (+)-ε-viniferin and pallidol exhibited no effect on SIRT1 enzyme activity, whereas (+)-ampelopsin B and (-)-ampelopsin F showed inhibitory activity on SIRT1. However, all the resveratrol tetramers examined, i.e., (+)-vitisin A, (-)-vitisin B, (+)-hopeaphenol, (-)-hopeaphenol, and (-)-isohopeaphenol markedly inhibited the human SIRT1 enzyme activity. (+)-Hopeaphenol exhibited the most potent inhibitory activity, which was comparable with that exhibited by a known SIRT1 inhibitor suramin. Since SIRT1 inhibitors reportedly possess anticancer activity, (+)-hopeaphenol and other resveratrol oligomers can be used as a seed compound for anticancer drugs

    Setup accuracy and dose attenuation of a wooden immobilization system for lung stereotactic body radiotherapy

    Background: We evaluated the setup error and dose absorption of an immobilization system with a shell and wooden baseplate (SW) for lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Materials and methods: Setup errors in 109 patients immobilized with an SW or BodyFix system (BF) were compared. Dose attenuation rates of materials for baseplates were measured with an ion-chamber. Ionization measurements were performed from 90° to 180° gantry angle in 10° increments, with the ball water equivalent phantom placed at the center of the wood and carbon baseplates whose effects on dose distribution were compared using an electron portal imaging device. Results: The ratio for the anterior-posterior, cranial-caudal, and right-left of the cases within 3-mm registered shifts in interfractional setup error were 90.9%, 89.2%, and 97.4% for the SW, and 93.2%, 91.6%, and 98.0% for the BF, respectively. For intrafractional setup error, 98.3%, 97.4%, and 99.1% for the SW and 96.6%, 95.8%, and 98.7% for the BF were within 3-mm registered shifts, respectively. In the center position, the average (minimum/maximum) dose attenuation rates from 90° to 180° for the wooden and carbon baseplates were 0.5 (0.1/2.8)% and 1.0 (–0.1/10.1)% with 6 MV, respectively. The gamma passing rates of 2%/2 mm for the wooden and carbon baseplates were 99.7% and 98.3% (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The immobilization system with an SW is effective for lung SBRT since it is comparable to the BF in setup accuracy. Moreover, the wooden baseplate had lower radiation attenuation rates and affected the dose distribution less than the carbon baseplate.
