Dynamical decoupling of a geometric qubit

Quantum bits or qubits naturally decohere by becoming entangled with uncontrollable environments. Dynamical decoupling is thereby required to disentangle qubits from an environment by periodically reversing the qubit bases, but this causes rotation error to accumulate. Whereas a conventional qubit is rotated within the SU(2) two-level system, a geometric qubit defined in the degenerate subspace of a V-shaped SU(3) three-level system is geometrically rotated via the third ancillary level to acquire a geometric phase. We here demonstrate that, simply by introducing detuning, the dynamical decoupling of the geometric qubit on a spin triplet electron in a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond can be made to spontaneously suppress error accumulation. The geometric dynamical decoupling extends the coherence time of the geometric qubit up to 1.9 ms, limited by the relaxation time, with 128 decoupling gates at room temperature. Our technique opens a route to holonomic quantum memory for use in various quantum applications requiring sequential operation

Sulfur assimilation using gaseous carbonyl sulfideby the soil fungus Trichoderma harzianum

Fungi have the capacity to assimilate a diverse range of both inorganic and organic sulfur compounds. It has been recognized that all sulfur sources taken up by fungi are in soluble forms. In this study, we present evidence that fungi can utilize gaseous carbonyl sulfide(COS) for the assimilation of a sulfur compound. We found that the filamentousfungus Trichoderma harzianum strain THIF08, which has constitutively high COS-degrading activity, was able to grow with COS as the sole sulfur source. Cultivation with 34S-labeled COS revealed that sulfur atom from COS was incorporated into intracellular metabolites such as glutathione and ergothioneine. COS degradation by strain THIF08, in which as much of the moisture derived from the agar medium as possible was removed, indicated that gaseous COS was taken up directly into the cell. Escherichia coli transformed with a COS hydrolase (COSase) gene, which is clade D of the β-class carbonic anhydrase subfamily enzyme with high specificity for COS but low activity for CO2 hydration, showed that the COSase is involved in COS assimilation. Comparison of sulfur metabolites of strain THIF08 revealed a higher relative abundance of reduced sulfur compounds under the COS-supplemented condition than the sulfate-supplemented condition, suggesting that sulfur assimilation is more energetically efficient with COS than with sulfate because there is no redox change of sulfur. Phylogenetic analysis of the genes encoding COSase, which are distributed in a wide range of fungal taxa, suggests that the common ancestor of Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Mucoromycota acquired COSase at about 790-670 Ma. © 2024 Iizuka et al

A compact frequency-stabilized pump laser for wavelength conversion in long-distance quantum communication

We demonstrate a compact frequency-stabilized laser at 1064 nm using Doppler-free saturation absorption spectroscopy of molecular iodine. The achieved laser frequency stability and linewidth are 5.7 10-12 (corresponding to an uncertainty of the laser frequency of 1.6 kHz) and 400 kHz, respectively. The developed frequency-stabilized laser can be used as a pump laser for wavelength conversion from visible to telecom (or vice versa) to connect quantum memories utilizing nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond at remote nodes in fiber-based quantum communication.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, JOSAB accepte

【Background】The epidemiology of fractures in children is not reported over the past 10 years in Japan. We investigated the epidemiology of pediatric fractures in our hospital over the past 10 years. 【Method】A retrospective analysis of fractures in children(0 to 15 years-old)between April 1, 2009, and March31,2019was undertaken. We excluded cranial and/or facial bone fractures. 【Results】We enrolled261children and297fractures. Mean age was8.9year-old, and70.8% was boys. The highest cause of fractures is sports(29.5%,77/261children), especially contact sports. Referred children were58.2%(152/261children)and operated children were 89%(233/261 children). 【Conclusion】Enlightment activities about fractures in sports and aggregation of children who needs a operation may be important

Dose difference between anisotropic analytical algorithm (AAA) and Acuros XB (AXB) caused by target’s air content for volumetric modulated arc therapy of head and neck cancer

Background: We clarified the dose difference between the anisotropic analytical algorithm (AAA) and Acuros XB (AXB) with increasing target’s air content using a virtual phantom and clinical cases. Material and methods: Whole neck volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plan was transferred into a virtual phantom with a cylindrical air structure at the center. The diameter of the air structure was changed from 0 to 6 cm, and the target’s air content defined as the air/planning target volume (PTV) in percent (air/PTV) was varied. VMAT plans were recalculated by AAA and AXB with the same monitor unit (MU) and multi-leaf collimator (MLC) motions. The dose at each air/PTV (5%–30%) was compared between each algorithm with D98%, D95%, D50% and D2% for the PTV. In addition, MUs were also compared with the same MLC motions between the D95% prescription with AAA (AAA_D95%), AXB_D95%, and the prescription to 100% minus air/PTV (AXB_D100%-air/PTV) in clinical cases of HNC. Results: When air/PTV increased (5–30%), the dose differences between AAA and AXB for D98%, D95%, D50% and D2% were 3.08–15.72%, 2.35–13.92%, 0.63–4.59%, and 0.14–6.44%, respectively. At clinical cases with air/PTV of 5.61% and 28.19%, compared to AAA_D95%, the MUs differences were, respectively, 2.03% and 6.74% for AXB_D95% and 1.80% and 0.50% for AXB_D100%-air/PTV. Conclusion: The dose difference between AAA and AXB increased as the target’s air content increased, and AXB_D95% resulted in a dose escalation over AAA_D95% when the target’s air content was ≥ 5%. The D100%-air/PTV of PTV using AXB was comparable to the D95% of PTV using AAA

Mameno T., Moynihan P., Nakagawa T., et al. Exploring the association between number of teeth, food intake, and cognitive function: A 9-year longitudinal study. Journal of Dentistry 145, 104991 (2024); https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jdent.2024.104991.Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association between the number of teeth, food intake, and cognitive function in Japanese community-dwelling older adults. Methods: This 9-year longitudinal study included a total of 293 analyzable participants who participated in baseline and follow-up surveys. Dental status (number of teeth and periodontal pocket depth), dietary assessment using the brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire, cognitive function, and the following confounding factors were evaluated: educational level, financial satisfaction, living situation, smoking and drinking habits, history of chronic diseases, apolipoprotein E-ε4 carrier, body mass index, handgrip strength, instrumental activities of daily living, and depressive symptomatology. The Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment was used to evaluate cognitive function. A multinomial logistic regression analysis for the intake level of each food categorized into three groups (low, moderate, high), and a generalized estimating equation (GEE) for cognitive function over nine years were performed. Results: After controlling for confounding factors, the number of teeth was shown to be associated with the intake of green-yellow vegetables and meat. Furthermore, the GEE indicated that the lowest quartile of intake of green-yellow vegetables significantly associated with lower cognitive function (unstandardized regression coefficient [B] = -0.96, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: -1.72 to -0.20), and the lowest quartile of intake of meat significantly associated with lower cognitive function (B = -1.42, 95 % CI: -2.27 to -0.58). Conclusions: The intake of green and yellow vegetables and meat, which is influenced by the number of teeth, was associated with cognitive function in Japanese community-dwelling older adults. Clinical Significance: There are few studies that have examined the association between oral health, food intake, and cognitive function. This 9-year longitudinal study suggests that it is important to maintain natural teeth to enable the functional means to consume green-yellow vegetables and meat, and thereby help maintain cognitive function

The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the high-energy universe via a suite of four instruments, covering a very wide energy range, from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. These instruments include a high-resolution, high-throughput spectrometer sensitive over 0.3-2 keV with high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV, enabled by a micro-calorimeter array located in the focal plane of thin-foil X-ray optics; hard X-ray imaging spectrometers covering 5-80 keV, located in the focal plane of multilayer-coated, focusing hard X-ray mirrors; a wide-field imaging spectrometer sensitive over 0.4-12 keV, with an X-ray CCD camera in the focal plane of a soft X-ray telescope; and a non-focusing Compton-camera type soft gamma-ray detector, sensitive in the 40-600 keV band. The simultaneous broad bandpass, coupled with high spectral resolution, will enable the pursuit of a wide variety of important science themes.Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, Proceedings of the SPIE Astronomical Instrumentation "Space Telescopes and Instrumentation 2012: Ultraviolet to Gamma Ray
