The Effect of Using the 4MAT Teaching Method in 6th-Grade Social Studies Education on the Academic Achievement of Students
The goal of this research is to reveal out the effect of the activities prepared based on the 4MATteaching method on the academic achievement of the students, with respect to the unit, "The Journey ofDemocracy", included in social studies curriculum for 6th-graders. In accordance with this goal, theresearch was conducted using the Solomon four-group experimental model. The study group of theresearch consisted of 80 sixth graders studying, in the 2017-2018 academic year, at a public secondaryschool in Merkezefendi district of Denizli province located in the west of Turkey. The research wasconducted in a total of four different classes each of which consisted of 20 students. Classes 6/A and6/C made up the experiment group whereas classes 6/B and 6/D made up the control group. Anachievement test developed by the researcher, consisting of 25 questions, with a KR20 value of .80, wasused as the mean of data collection. Four options were offered for each question included in theachievement test and the students were asked to mark the option they deemed to be true. In the analysisof the data, frequency, arithmetic mean, percent, standard deviation; and t-test and covariance(ANCOVA) tests among the difference tests, were used. At the end of the research, it was concludedthat the 4MAT teaching method was more effective than the existing teaching method in improving theacademic achievement of the students with respect to the unit 'The Journey of Democracy"
Developing Skills of Map Scale Using in Teaching Social Studies
Bu araştırmanın amacı, ilköğretim 6. sınıf Sosyal Bilgiler dersinde harita ölçeği kullanma becerilerinin geliştirilmesine yönelik etkinliklerin öğrencilerin akademik başarısına etkisini belirlemektir.
Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu uşak merkez ilçesinde Atatürk İlköğretim Okulunda öğrenim gören 6. Sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada deney (n=27) ve kontrol (n=27) grubu olmak üzere iki sınıf alınmış ve öntest sontest kontrol gruplu deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Öntest ve sontestlerin uygulanması dâhil 4 hafta süren uygulama sürecinde deney grubuna dersler harita ölçeği kullanma becerisini geliştirmeye yönelik hazırlanan etkinliklerle yapılandırmacı bir şekilde işlenmiş, kontrol grubuna ise harita ölçeği kullanma becerisini geliştirmeye yönelik etkinliklerin kullanılmadığı yapılandırmacı öğretim şekilde işlenmiştir. Araştırmada veri toplama amacı ile başarı testi kullanılmıştır. Deneysel işlem öncesi ve sonrasında başarı testi her iki gruba da uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler SPSS programı yardımıyla analiz edilmiştir.
Verilerin analizi sonucunda deney ve kontrol grubu öğrencilerinin harita ölçeği kullanma becerisini kazanımlarına ilişkin deney grubu lehine anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur. Gerçekleştirilen bu araştırmanın bundan sonra yapılacak araştırmalara yol göstereceği ve ilköğretim düzeyinde öğrencilere harita ölçeği kullanma becerisinin kazandırılmasında yardımcı olacağı düşünülmektedir.The aim of this research is to determine the effects of acttivities that related to developing skills of map scale using in 6st class of social sicience course in primery school, to the academic success of students.
6st class students of Atatürk primary school that located in central district of Uşak, form the working group of research. In research, two classes were taken as experiment(n:27), and control group (n:27) and expermental designe was used with pretest-lasttest control group. The practice lasted four weeks including practice of pretest-lasttest. And in the process of practice while lessens were given to experiment group with activities aiming to develop skill of map scale using, the lessons were given to contro group with activies that not using to developt skilll of map using. A success test was used with aim of collecting data. The test was applied to both groups, before experimental procedure and after it. And acquired datas were analysed with help of SPSS proggramme.
As a result of data analyses, unlight the control group students of experimentaal group achived skill of map scale using. It şs thought that this research will be a guide for other researchs and it will also help students to achive skill of map scale using in primary classes
The effects of computer based instructional materials used in social study of sixth grade studentsz attention and motivation levels
Bu araştırmanın amacı, sosyal bilgiler dersinde kullanılan bilgisayar temelli materyallerin 6. sınıf öğrencilerinin dikkat ve motivasyon düzeylerine etkisinin tespit edilmesidir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Uşak Merkez ilçesinde Mehmet Sesli Ortaokulunda öğrenim gören 6. sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma da yarı deneysel desenlerden zaman serisi ve öntest sontest kontrol gruplu 2*2 Split Plot deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Zaman serisi deneysel işleminde, ailelerinden izin alınan 6. sınıf öğrencilerinden 21 kişi çalışma grubunu oluştururken; öntest sontest kontrol gruplu deneysel işlemde deney grubunu (n=27) ve kontrol grubunu (n=28) toplam 55 öğrenci oluşturmuştur. Zaman serisi deneysel işlemine katılan 21 öğrenci aynı zamanda öntest sontest kontrol gruplu deneysel işleme de katılmıştır. Öntest ve sontestlerin uygulanması dâhil 6 hafta süren uygulama sürecinde deney grubunda dersler bilgisayar temelli materyallerle işlenirken; kontrol grubunda ders kitabına bağlı kalınarak ve basılı harita kullanılarak dersler işlenmiştir. Araştırmada, bilgisayar temelli materyallerin öğrencilerin dikkat düzeyine etkisini ölçebilmek için veri toplama aracı olarak NeuroSkyzs MindWave - EEG cihazı kullanılırken; bilgisayar temelli materyallerin öğrencilerinin motivasyon düzeyine etkisini ölçebilmek için ise Pintrich, Smith, Garcia ve McKeachie tarafından 1993 yılında geliştirilen ve 2007 yılında Büyüköztürk, Akgün, Karadeniz, Kılıç ve Demirel tarafından Türkçe'ye uyarlanan "(MSLQ) For 1218 Year Old Children" ölçeği kullanılmıştır. viii
Elde edilen verilerin çözümlenmesinde, SPSS 19.00, PYTHON ve MATLAB programlarından yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, hazırlanan Prezi sunumu, dijital grafik, dijital harita, belgesel, animasyon ve konuya ilişkin izletilen şarkı klipzinin öğrencilerin dikkat düzeyini artırdığı bulgusuna ulaşılmıştır. Öte yandan, bilgisayar temelli materyallerin öğrencilerin derse ilişkin motivasyonlarını arttırdığı ve öğrencilerin dikkat düzeylerinin, motivasyon düzeylerini yordamadığı araştırmanın diğer sonuçlarındandır.The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of computer based instructional materials used in social study courses of sixth grade studentsz attention and motivation levels. The study group consists of students who are studying at Mehmet Sesli Middle School in Uşak province. In this study, it is used a time series design which is one of the semi experimental designs and 2x2 Split Pilot with pretest-post test control groups. Time series experimental treatment group comprise 21 students permitted from their parents to participate in this research. In experimental process with pretest- lasttest, experiment (n=27) and control (n=28) group, totally include 55 students. 21 students who participated in time series- experimental treatment also took part in experimental treatment with pretest-postest control group. Courses at experimental group during practices which long at 6 weeks depend on computer based instructional materials while courses at control group rely on text boks and maps. As data collection tools, it is used NeuroSkyzs MindWave - EEG device to measure the effects of computers based instructional materials on studentsz attention levels. Also, to determine the effects of computer based instructional materials on studentsz motivation levels, it is utilized (MSLQ) For 12-18 Year Old Children Scale developed by Pintrich, Smith, Garcia ve McKeachie (1993) and adapted to Turkish language by Büyüköztürk, Akgün, Karadeniz, Kılıç and Demirel (2007).
In the analysis of data obtained, it was benefited from computer softwares such as SPSS 19.00, PYTHON ve MATLAB. The findings indicated that prezi presentation, digital graph, digital map, documantary, animation and song clips about the subject taught increase studentsz attention levels. Moreover, computer based instructioal materials enhance their motivations although studentsz attention levels doesnzt predict their motivation levels
Review of master's theses in the field of social studies education between 2008 and 2014
The purpose of this study is to investigate the general trends of master dissertations written in Social Studies Education and performed in 2008-2014 years in terms of thematic and methodology. Document review was performed in study. The study group was included in all the master’s thesis recorded at thesis database of Higher Education Council established in Turkey. Through this database, we obtained 423 theses to open access for the readers. For data analysis, descriptive analysis was used. Accordingly, firstly, 423 master thesis were classified into themes by study areas regarding social studies. Then, methodological processes such as the research method, the audience, the statistical and qualitative data analysis methods, and the studies of validity and reliability used in research were examined using frequency and percentile. The findings of this study indicate that the theme most studied is about Teaching Practices; the research method most used is survey method; as the audience, theses mostly rely on middle school students. It reveals also an evidence that expert opinion was employed for validation and Cronbach alpha coefficient was calculated for reliability at most. Furthermore, findings display that researchers have used Parametric Difference Tests in their master thesis. © 2019 by authors, all rights reserved
Coğrafya Konuların Öğretiminde Materyal Kullanımının Öğrenci Başarısına Etkisi: Bir Meta Analiz Çalışması / The Effect of the Usage of Instructional Materials on Student Achievement in Teaching Geography: A Meta-analytic Study
Abstract
This study aims to combine the results of independent studies in order to reveal the impact of the usage of instructional materials in teaching geography subjects on students’ achievement. We have tried to answer the question “Do the instructional materials in teaching geography subjects impact on students’ achievement?”. The study is performed via meta-analysis. The total sampling size obtained from 31 studies included in analysis. The data were analyzed using STATA 13. and CMA 3 programs. When analyzing the data, the values of standard deviation, arithmetic average and sampling size of postest measures of control and experimental groups in each study were used. The results of this study indicate that the usage of instructional materials in the teaching geography subjects impacts positively on students’ achievementat at wider effect size. They also show that there is no any statistically difference among effect size by sampling stage (high school), the material type used, research type, and publication years of studies.

Bu çalışmada, coğrafya konuların öğretilmesinde kullanılan materyallerin öğrenci başarısı üzerindeki etkisinin tespit edilmesine yönelik yapılmış birbirinden bağımsız çalışmalardan elde edilen sonuçların birleştirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç dâhilinde, “Coğrafya Konuların Öğretiminde Kullanılan Materyaller, öğrencilerin akademik başarılarını etkilemekte midir?” sorusuna cevap aranmıştır. Çalışma, meta analiz yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Analize dahil edilen 31 çalışmadan elde edilen toplam örneklem büyüklüğü 2138 dir. Verilerin analizinde STATA 13 ve CMA 3 programları kullanılmıştır. Verileri analiz ederken her bir çalışmanın kontrol ve deney grubunun sontest ölçümlerinden standart sapma, aritmetik ve örneklem büyüklüğü değerleri kullanılmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda, coğrafya konuların öğretiminde kullanılan materyallerin öğrencilerin akademik başarılarına pozitif yönde geniş düzeyde etki ettiği görülmüştür. Ayrıca, araştırmanın karakteristiğini oluşturan öğrenim düzeyi, materyal türü, çalışma türü ve çalışmaların yayınlandığı yıl değişkenlerine göre etki büyüklükleri açısından istatistikî olarak bir farkın olmadığı tespit edilmiştir

INVESTIGATION OF TOLERANCE TRENDS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Bu araştırmanın amacı ortaokul 6,7 ve 8.sınıf öğrencilerininhoşgörü eğilimlerini çeşitli değişkenler açısından incelemektir. Bu amaçdoğrultusunda incelenecek değişkenler literatüre dayanarak, cinsiyet,aile yapısı ve gelir durumu, anne-baba meslek durumu ve eğitim düzeyi,günlük TV izleme ve internet kullanma süresi, kitap okuma sıklığı ilesınıf düzeyi olarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırma nicel araştırma türlerindenbetimseltaramamodelineuygunolarakgerçekleştirilmiştir.Araştırmanın çalışma evrenini 2015 - 2016 eğitim öğretim yılında Uşakilinde öğrenimine devam etmekte olan ortaokul öğrencileri, örnekleminiise kolay ulaşılabilir örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilmiş Uşak iline bağlıBanaz ilçesinin merkezinde bulunan bir devlet ortaokulunda 6,7 ve8.sınıflardaöğreniminedevamedentoplam252öğrencioluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak Çalışkan ve Sağlam (2012)tarafından geliştirilen 18 madde ve 3 alt boyuttan (Empati, Değer veKabul) oluşan "Hoşgörü Eğilimleri Ölçeği" kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada içgüvenirlik katsayısı ,76 hesaplanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler betimselistatistiklerden yüzde ve frekans, fark testlerinden bağımsız gruplar içint testi, tek yönlü varyans analizi, doğrulayıcı faktör analizi, Brown-Forsythe ve Welch testlerine tabi tutulmuştur. Araştırma sonucunda;öğrencilerin cinsiyet, aile yapısı, anne ve baba meslek, anne ve babaeğitim durumu, aile gelir durumu, günlük internet kullanma, televizyonizleme ve kitap okuma sıklığı değişkenleri açısından hoşgörüeğilimlerinde istatistiksel anlamda fark görülmezken; sınıf düzeyideğişkenine göre 6. sınıf öğrencileri lehine anlamlı fark olduğusonucuna ulaşılmıştır.The purpose of this study is to investigate the tolerancedispositions of 6th, 7th, and 8th students by various variables. In theline of this aim, based on the literature screened, we determined thesevariables as gender, family structure, and income level, their professionstatues, and their educational level, daily watching TV, and internetusage hours, the frequency of reading books, and class grade. Theresearch was carried out by descriptive survey model of quantitativeresearch methods. The study universe of the research consisted of allmiddle school students studying in Uşak province. The sample included252 students studying at 6, 7 and 8 grades in a public school, andchosen by convenient sampling method. “Tolerance Dispositions Scale”including 18 items, and 3 sub-dimensions (Empathy, Values, andAcceptance), and developed by Çalışkan & Sağlam (2012) was used asthe data gathering tool. Internal consistency coefficient was computedto be .76. The percentile, and frequency of descriptive statistics,independent samples t tests, one-way variance analysis, confirmatoryfactor analysis, Brown Forsythe, and Welch tests were performed on thedata obtained. The results indicated that there is no significantdifference by gender, family structure, their profession statues, andtheir educational level, daily watching TV, and internet usage hours, thefrequency of reading books although 6 th students have significantlymore tolerance dispositions than of the others
An Action Research Study on Teaching the Landform Concepts in a Fifth Grade Social Studies Course
This study aims to find out the effect of activities and practices on concept education to help carry out activities to teach these concepts more effectively and permanently, and determine student preconceptions about the concepts related to the landforms in the 5th-grade social studies curriculum in the learning subdomain called “People, Places and Environments.” It was conducted as an action research study, employing a qualitative research design. The participants of the study were 16 fifth graders who were studying at a state secondary school in Bekilli District of the province of Denizli, Turkey. Mind maps, worksheet activities, models and mock-up, focus group interviews and field notes were used as the data collection tools, concept development tools, and process support tools. Collected in four class hours, the data were subjected to statement-based content analysis, and then compared with the criteria developed for the related concept and converted into findings and conclusions. The findings indicate that the student group has a partial preliminary knowledge and perception of the distinctive landforms they see around them. However, the student group's preliminary knowledge and perception of the landforms they do not observe around them is insufficient. The results obtained at the end of the instructional intervention process indicate that the student group is confused about the definitions of the bay, gulf, cape, peninsula, island, strait, and ocean. With the activities implemented after the additional action plan, the student group made progress by effectively learning the basic and sub-dimensional landforms they were confused about. The student group found it useful to carry out mind maps and application activities and achieved effective learning with models and mock-ups. Based on research result, use of sightseeing –observation techniques can be recommended to social studies teachers
Determination of the Effects of Computer Based Instructional Materials Used in Social Studies Education of Sixth Grade Students' Attention Levels via Using an Electroencephalography Device
WOS: 000412418500069The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of computer-based instructional materials used in social study courses of sixth grade attention levels via an electroencephalography device. In this study, a time series design was employed. The study group was composed 21 volunteer students who were allowed sixth grade in a public secondary school located in the Central District of Usak province during the 2013-2014 academic year. NeuroSky's MindWave - EEG device was used as data collection tool in the study. "PYTHON" and "MATLAB" programs were used for the analysis of the obtained data. As a result of the research, prezi presentation, digital graphics, digital map, documentary and animation were found to increase the attention level of the students. Apart from the purpose of the research, the levels of attention dropped when the questions were asked students. According to the printed maps, digital maps increase students' attention and the hand movements of the teacher in the class is also effective in the attention levels of the students
