    Theorizing Ambivalence in Ang Lee\u27s Transnational Cinema: The Discourse of Chinese Identity Between the Local and the Global

    Using ambivalence as a theoretical framework, this study examines Ang Lee\u27s cinematic discourse of Chinese identity, which is co-constructed with the audiences from different cultural communities. I focus on Ang Lee\u27s transnational films Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Lust, Caution as my two case studies. By analyzing the audience discourse from Taiwan, Mainland China, and overseas Chinese communities, I am able to conceptualize their reactions as communicative moments that co-construct the meaning of the film text. I suggest that ambivalence is a self-representational strategy for the ethnic Other, who is historically denied access to representation, to contest and subvert the conventional stereotyping and simplification of one\u27s subjectivity. Additionally, this research provides a good example of the familiar cycle of ambivalent emotion toward the West, in the aftermath of postcolonialism. China and Taiwan\u27s long history of engaging in a subordinate relationship with the West enhances the resurgence of ambivalence. Representations become a significant and predominant way to mediate one\u27s bodily experiences, to connect and collaborate with one another, and to form and inform one\u27s cultural identity. My research furthers the theorization of the ways in which new media technologies impact and alter the human interactions between peoples from various cultural, social, and political contexts

    Role of the Diphosphine Chelate in Emissive, Charge-Neutral Iridium(III) Complexes

    A class of neutral tris-bidentate Ir(III) metal complexes incorporating a diphosphine as a chelate is prepared and characterized here for the first time. Treatment of [Ir(dppb)(tht)Cl3] (1) with fppzH afforded the dichloride complexes, trans-(Cl,Cl)[Ir(dppb)(fppz)Cl2] (2) and cis-(Cl,Cl)[Ir(dppb)(fppz)Cl2] (3). The reaction of 3 with the dianionic chelate precursor bipzH2 or mepzH2, in DMF gave the complex [Ir(dppb)(fppz)(bipz)] (4) or [Ir(dppb)(fppz)(mepz)] (5), respectively. In contrast, a hydride complex [Ir(dppb)(fppz)(bipzH)H] (6) was isolated instead of 4 in protic solvent, namely: DGME. All complexes 2 - 6 are luminescent in powder forms and thin films where the dichlorides (2, 3) emit with maxima at 590-627 nm (orange) and quantum yields (Q.Y.s) up to 90% whereas the tris-bidentate (4, 5) and hydride (6) complexes emit at 455-458 nm (blue) with Q.Y.s up to 70%. Hybrid TD-DFT calculations showed considerable MLCT contribution to the orange-emitting 2 and 3 but substantial ligand-centered 3ππ* transition character in the blue-emitting 4 - 6. The dppb does not participate to these radiative transitions in 4 - 6, but it provides the rigidity and steric bulk needed to promote the luminescence by suppressing the self-quenching in the solid state. Fabrication of an OLED with dopant 5 gave a deep blue CIE chromaticity of (0.16, 0.15). Superior blue emitters, which are vital in OLED applications, may be found in other neutral Ir(III) complexes containing phosphine chelates

    Development of Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) Markers in Setaria italica (Poaceae) and Cross-Amplification in Related Species

    Foxtail millet is one of the world’s oldest cultivated crops. It has been adopted as a model organism for providing a deeper understanding of plant biology. In this study, 45 simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers of Setaria italica were developed. These markers showing polymorphism were screened in 223 samples from 12 foxtail millet populations around Taiwan. The most common dinucleotide and trinucleotide repeat motifs are AC/TG (84.21%) and CAT (46.15%). The average number of alleles (Na), the average heterozygosities observed (Ho) and expected (He) are 3.73, 0.714, 0.587, respectively. In addition, 24 SSR markers had shown transferability to six related Poaceae species. These new markers provide tools for examining genetic relatedness among foxtail millet populations and other related species. It is suitable for germplasm management and protection in Poaceae

    Reduction of Airway Hyperresponsiveness by KWLL in Dermatophagoides-pteronyssinus

    Urine therapy has been commonly practiced in ancient civilizations including those of India, China, and Greece. The traditional Chinese medicine KWLL, the precipitation of human urine, has been used in China to alleviate the symptoms of asthma for thousands of years. However, the mechanism of action by which KWLL exerts its immunotherapy is unclear. This study attempted to elucidate the pharmacology of KWLL in mice that had been challenged recurrently by Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p). BALB/c mice were orally administered KWLL (1 g/kg) before an intratracheal (i.t.) challenge of Der p. Allergic airway inflammation and remodeling were provoked by repetitive Der p (50 μg/mice) challenges six times at 1 wk intervals. Airway hypersensitivity, histological lung characteristics, and the expression profiles of cytokines and various genes were assessed. KWLL reduced Der p-induced airway hyperresponsiveness and inhibited eosinophil infiltration by downregulating the protein expression of IL-5 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). It also inhibited neutrophil recruitment by downregulating IL-17A in BALF. KWLL effectively diminished inflammatory cells, goblet cell hyperplasia, and mRNA expression of IL-6 and IL-17A in the lung. The reduction by KWLL of airway inflammatory and hyperresponsiveness in allergic asthmatic mice was mediated via immunomodulation of IL-5, IL-6, and IL-17A
