    Get PDF
This article presents the findings of a seven-week case study which aimed to identify the benefits of self-assessment in EFL writing classes at tertiary level. The study was conducted with 17 B1- English language proficiency level students studying at an English preparatory programme of a foundation university. First, the students were introduced to using rubrics to assess a written product. Then, each week after students composed a writing, a paragraph for the first three weeks and an essay for the remaining four weeks, the students were asked to assess their own writing by using the relevant rubric and filling in the self-assessment form. In addition, a questionnaire was conducted at the beginning of the study to investigate whether the students could identify their own strengths and weaknesses in writing, whether they could make sense of the criteria that are used for writing quizzes, and whether they made sense of the feedback given by the teachers for their writings. The same questionnaire was conducted again on the last day of the research to check whether the participants changed their opinions. The results revealed that the students improved their understanding of the rubrics over time by practice, they felt more responsible for their own learning, they were able to reflect on their own performance, and they became more autonomous learners

Adnexal torsion in the first trimester of a spontaneous pregnancy: detorsion and oophoropexy

Introduction: Adnexal torsion is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain during pregnancy. In this case report, we present a case of adnexal torsion during the first trimester of pregnancy and its treatment. Case Presentation: A 28-year old, gravida 1, para 0 patient at 9 weeks gestational age presented to the antenatal clinic with acute abdominal pain in the right lower-abdominal quadrant. The patient was diagnosed with torsion of the right adnexa during pregnancy, and detorsion was performed. The patient was followed throughout the course of pregnancy. She delivered a healthy baby at term by caesarian section. During the caesarian section, both of the adnexa were observed to be normal. Conclusions: With acute abdominal pain, especially in the lower-abdominal quadrant during pregnancy, adnexal pathologies should be considered. Diagnosis of adnexal torsion during the first trimester of pregnancy is often missed due to the nonspecific clinical features and uncommon objective findings. Although surgical intervention should be considered to treat pregnant women suffering from adnexal torsion regardless of the gestational week, abdominal surgery carries some risks to the pregnant woman and unborn fetus

Comparing the Influence of the Drop Fill and Overflow Rinsing on the Reactive Dyeing Process in a Textile Dye House

    Get PDF
Drop/fill rinsing method was used for reducing the high water consumption of overflow rinsing process in textile dye house. However, it is not known whether this drop/fill method has adverse effects on the final fabric properties or not. In this study, the effects of using drop/fill method instead of overflow rinsing process on colorimetric and fastness properties of 100% cotton towel fabrics are investigated. It is found that, skipping to the drop fill rinsing method from the over flow rinsing process and obtained fresh water saving has no negative effect on colorimetric and color fastness values of the processed fabric samples and can be used conveniently in the industrial sized production. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

Is it essential to perform preoperative diagnostic curettage in patients scheduled for uterine myoma surgery?

Objective: Uterine myoma, which arises from the myometrium of uterus, is among the most common benign tumors of women. Generally, it has an asymptomatic character, however, in symptomatic cases, it presents with abnormal uterine bleeding. The objective of this study is to determine whether preoperative diagnostic curettage is essential or not by comparing the preoperative and postoperative endometriums of patients that underwent surgery with uterine myoma diagnosis. Material and Method: In this study,260 patients that received surgery with uterine myoma diagnosis in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of Taksim Education and Research Hospital in Istanbul between January 2007 and January 2010, were included. The histopathologic analysis of specimens obtained by preoperative curettage and hysterectomy, was carried out in a retrospective fashion. Results: The mean age of patients was 48.3 ± 7.5 years. The distribution of preoperative curettage specimens with regard to endometrial status was as follows: phase compatible endometrium in 156 (60%), endometrial polyp in 74 (28.5%), atrophic endometrium in 20 (7.7%), and endometrial hyperplasia in 10 patients (3.8%). Among the phase compatible endometriums, 85 patients (54.5%) had proliferative endometrium, 39 patients (25%) had late secretory phase endometrium, and 32 patients (20.5%) had early secretory phase endometrium. The distribution of postoperative hysterectomy specimens with regard to endometrial status was as follows: Phase compatible endometrium in 160 patients (61.5%), endometrial polyp in 61 patients (22.5%), endometrial hyperplasia in 14 patients (5.4%), and atrophic endometrium in 25 patients (9.6%). Among the phase compatible endometriums; 96 patients (60%) had proliferative endometrium, 44 patients (27.5%) had late secretory endometrium, and 20 patients (12.5%) had early secretory endometrium. Conclusion: No difference was observed between the histopathologic results of diagnostic curettage and hysterectomy relative to malignancy or a pathology that would change the surgery plan. The result is very important because it shows that performing curettage before myoma surgery is not an essential procedure. In this study, since endometrial cancer may not have been detected due to limited number of patients, further studies including higher number of patients are required to confirm our results

THE EFFECT OF THE EXPLICIT STRATEGY TRAINING ON LEARNER AUTONOMY

    Get PDF
The study aimed to investigate the effect of the explicit strategy training on the students’ autonomy in foreign language learning and to seek for their attitudes towards such training. The research lasted for fourteen weeks at the 2018-2019 academic year. Data were collected through the Course Evaluation Questionnaire, the Student Autonomous Learning Capacity Questionnaire, the learner diary, the researcher's diary and semi-structured interviews. The SALCQ was administered twice first at the beginning and secondly at the end of the training so as to identify any increases in the learners’ capacity of autonomy. The results revealed that the strategy training helped learners enhance their capacity of autonomy in some factors. The study disclosed that the students held positive attitudes towards the training as it provided opportunities for the students to employ LLSs more effectively, deal with learning related problems, enhance self-directed out of class activities, to develop language learning skills and to monitor their learning process in an effective way by raising their awareness of strategy use and self-confidence. Furthermore, the strategy training provided opportunities for the students to reflect on their learning methods, classroom activities along with their classroom behaviour and how learning could be made easier

Application of Bakri balloon in a patient who developed massive postpartum hemorrhage after caesarean section

Postpartum hemorrhage is an important emergency in obstetrics. In this study, we present the application of intrauterine balloon tamponade and its outcomes in a patient who developed massive postpartum hemorrhage after caesarean section. A 39- year-old, G5 P3 and 38 weeks pregnant (based on last menstrual period) patient was subjected to emergency caesarean section due to diagnosis of uteroplacental insufficiency and recurrent caesarean section. Four hours after the operation, atony occurred and despite medical treatment the hemorrhage persisted. We inserted a SOS Bakri balloon through the vaginal route and inflated it with 500cc intracavitary saline for achievement of intrauterine tamponade. Vaginal bleeding ended immediately after the procedure. Use of an intrauterine balloon is an easy-to-apply alternative to surgery that provides rapid hemostasis in serious postpartum hemorrhage

The influence of higher education experiences on ELT students’ learning outcomes

    Get PDF
AbstractThis study identifies and discusses whether and to what extent the learning outcomes are achieved in ELT Departments of two Turkish Universities based on the following two frameworks: The European Profile for Language Teacher Education and Framework of Turkish Higher Education Competencies. Findings regarding the contributions of in or out of class experiences to these expected outcomes are also discussed. The analyses demonstrate that not all these outcomes have been achieved and that what happens outside the classroom needs to be focused more to give the trainee teachers access to essential learning opportunities during their education

Efficacy of letrozole versus clomiphene citrate for infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome

    Get PDF
Background: The aim was to compare ovulation induction protocols in anovulatory patients, who make up a significant percentage of infertility patients, and to determine the most appropriate treatment for patients in the clinic based on the findings. Methods: The effectiveness of clomiphene citrate (CC) and letrozole (aromatase inhibitor) in ovulation induction treatments were retrospectively compared in patients who applied for infertility in the last 5 years and were found to be anovulatory. 20 of these patients were being treated with clomiphene citrate, while the 18 were being treated with letrozole. Results: The study included a total of 38 anovulatory infertile patients. The mean age of the patients was found to be 29.3. When the endometrial thicknesses (ET) after the treatment were compared, the first group's mean EC was 6.1, while that of the second group was 9.05. The endometrial thicknesses measured after the treatments were found to be significantly different, which were consistent with other studies in the literature. Post-treatment ovulation responses were similar with 55% in both groups. In the evaluation of pregnancy outcomes, 20% of pregnancy was achieved in the first group and 33% in the second group. Conclusions: The use of letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor, may be suggested as an alternative to CC in the ovulation induction protocol in our clinical practice, particularly in obese patients
