    Interactions between atomic-scale skyrmions in 2D chiral magnets

    To commercialize stable, highly-integrated, and low-power-consuming magnetic memories of skyrmions, stable control of their motion is crucial. Manipulating the inter-skyrmion interactions is key to achieving this goal. We find that distortion of the skyrmion shape can induce the interskyrmion attraction between atomic-scale small skyrmions, similar to larger skyrmions. Also, the interaction of smaller skyrmions reaches further, when scaled by the skyrmion size, than that of larger skyrmions. The continuum model is still capable of explaining the behavior. Moreover, the formation of the magnetic domains between skyrmions also induces attraction, which is again the same mechanism as larger skyrmions. This study contributes to better control of the skyrmion motion with a wide range of their sizes.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    New insights into the nature of the Λ(1380)\Lambda(1380) and Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) resonances away from the SU(3) limit

    Starting from the SU(3) limit, we consider the nature of the dynamically generated resonances Λ(1380)\Lambda(1380), Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) and Λ(1680)\Lambda(1680) as the pion and kaon masses are tuned to their physical values. We show that the accidental symmetry of the two octets due to the leading order Weinberg-Tomozawa term is broken by the next-to-leading order terms. Most interestingly, we observe an interchange of the two trajectories of the Λ(1380)\Lambda(1380) and the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) away from the SU(3) limit at next-to-leading order. This remarkable phenomenon can be investigated using lattice QCD calculations that start from the SU(3) limit.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Working from home and dietary changes during the COVID-19 pandemic: A longitudinal study of health app (CALO mama) users

    It is plausible that the coronavirus disease pandemic and related changes in work and life patterns affected dietary patterns, but existing studies have limitations owing to a cross-sectional design. Using longitudinal data, we examined dietary changes in people due to the pandemic and work and life patterns. We conducted an online survey on changes in work and life patterns during the pandemic from April 30, 2020, to May 8, 2020, among users of a health app called CALO mama provided in Japan. We retrieved and linked the dietary data for 5929 participants from January 1, 2020, to May 13, 2020. Generalized linear mixed models were used to estimate the frequencies of food intake associated with the pandemic and work and life patterns. During the state of emergency, the frequency of intake of vegetables, beans, seaweeds, fish, meats, dairy products, and snacks increased, whereas alcohol intake decreased. Working from home was associated with increased intake of vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and snacks but decreased intake of seaweeds, meats, and alcohol. Time spent on childcare was associated with decreased intake of vegetables and fruits but increased intake of meats. Probable depressive symptoms were negatively associated with the frequency of food intake other than snacks and alcohol. We conclude that diet quality improved during the pandemic in general, but attention must be paid to overconsumption of snacks and negative factors such as increased burden of childcare and depression for healthy eating

    The validity of dietary variety score (DVS) using a short-form questionnaire has not been investigated using dietary diversity based on a quantitative distribution of consumed foods in older Japanese. We examined the association between DVS and objective dietary diversity using a Quantitative Index for Dietary Diversity (QUANTIDD) based on the quantitative distribution of foods consumed by older Japanese community dwellers. The subjects were 65 older Japanese community dwellers aged 60–79 years. We used two kinds of scores for assessment of dietary diversity. At first, dietary diversity was determined using DVS calculated from answers to a questionnaire about frequencies of intake of 10 food groups. Second, dietary intake was assessed using a 3-day dietary record with photographs, and dietary diversity was determined using QUANTIDD. The relationships between DVS and QUANTIDD were assessed using partial correlation coefficients controlling for confounders. The correlation coefficient between DVS and QUANTIDD was moderate (r = 0.212-0.458). After controlling for confounders, those correlation coefficient between DVS and QUANTIDD remained moderate. The findings suggest that there was a moderate relationship between DVS and QUANTIDD, and DVS using a short-form questionnaire may be useful for assessing dietary diversity in older Japanese community dwellers

    Formation flying along libration point orbits using chattering attenuation sliding mode control

    This paper studies a control law to achieve formation flying in cislunar space. Utilizing the eigenstructure of the linearized flow around a libration point of the Earth-Moon circular restricted three-body problem, the fuel efficient formation flying controller based on the chattering attenuation sliding mode controller is designed and analyzed. Numerical studies are conducted for the Earth-Moon L 2 point and a halo orbit around it. The total velocity change required to achieve formation as well as to maintain the orbit is calculated. Simulation results show that the chattering attenuation sliding mode controller has good performance and robustness in the presence of unmodeled nonlinearity along the halo orbit with moderate fuel consumption

    The impact of sleep–wake problems on health-related quality of life among Japanese nursing college students: a cross sectional survey

    Aim: This study was conducted to examine the impact of sleep–wake problems on health-related quality of life of Japanese nursing college students.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 on 150 third and fourth-year nursing college students from two locations in Japan. Insomnia severity was assessed using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and health-related quality of life using the SF-8 questionnaire. The total sleep time (TST) was divided into 3 groups: < 6 h, 6–7 h (reference), and ≥ 7 h. The total ISI score was divided into 2 groups: ≥ 8 points and < 8 points (reference). Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate sleep–wake problems related to decline in mental health.Results: The median mental health indicated in the SF-8 questionnaire was divided into two groups, and the factors causing decline in mental health were investigated. The odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for adjusted ISI ≥ 8 and TST on weekdays < 6 h was 6.51 (2.96–14.30) and 3.38 (1.40–8.17), respectively. Mental health status was significantly lower when ISI ≥ 8 and even lower when TST < 6 h.Conclusion: Insomnia and short sleep duration are associated with decreased mental health status in nursing college students. Many tended to lack sleep on weekdays. Sleep–wake problems identified while in university should be comprehensively dealt with

    A class III peroxidase PRX34 is a component of disease resistance in Arabidopsis

    PRX34 mediates the oxidative burst in Arabidopsis. Here we characterized two additional Arabidopsis prx34 null mutants (prx34-2, prx34-3), besides the well-studied prx34-1. Due to a decrease in corresponding peroxidase, the activity that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) was significantly lower in cell wall extracts of prx34-2 and prx34-3 plants. Consistently, the prx34-2 and prx34-3 exhibited reduced accumulation both of ROS and callose in Flg22-elicitor-treated leaves, leading to enhanced susceptibility to bacterial and fungal pathogens. In contrast, ectopic expression of PRX34 in the wild type caused enhanced resistance. PRX34 is thus a component for disease resistance in Arabidopsis

    Neuromedin U-deficient rats do not lose body weight or food intake

    Studies in genetically modified mice establish that essential roles of endogenous neuromedin U (NMU) are anorexigenic function and metabolic regulation, indicating that NMU is expected to be a potential target for anti-obesity agents. However, in central administration experiments in rats, inconsistent results have been obtained, and the essential role of NMU energy metabolism in rats remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the role of endogenous NMU in rats. We generated NMU knockout (KO) rats that unexpectedly showed no difference in body weight, adiposity, circulating metabolic markers, body temperature, locomotor activity, and food consumption in both normal and high fat chow feeding. Furthermore, unlike reported in mice, expressions of Nmu and NMU receptor type 2 (Nmur2) mRNA were hardly detectable in the rat hypothalamic nuclei regulating feeding and energy metabolism, including the arcuate nucleus and paraventricular nucleus, while Nmu was expressed in pars tuberalis and Nmur2 was expressed in the ependymal cell layer of the third ventricle. These results indicate that the species-specific expression pattern of Nmu and Nmur2 may allow NMU to have distinct functions across species, and that endogenous NMU does not function as an anorexigenic hormone in rats
