BackgroundDepression prevalence and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in middle-aged and older people has become an increasingly concerned issue, yet it in Chinese population has been less reported, and needs to be further explored.ObjectiveTo investigate the epidemiology of ACEs among middle-aged and elderly Chinese people, and to analyze its association with depression prevalence, providing an accurate delineation of ACEs and depression prevalence in this group of Chinese people.MethodsInformation of 7 035 middle-aged and elderly people≥ 45 years old who met the research requirements were selected during July to August, 2021 from the database of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study held by Institute of Social Science Survey, Peking University, in which the questions in the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale used in the CHARLS, ACEs (including abuse, neglect, dysfunctional family) and individual characteristics were screened and generated into new dummy variables with the weight reassigned. Covariates of those with ACEs (treatment group) and those without (control group) were included in a propensity score matching model, and propensity scores of them were estimated using robust standard errors in multivariate Logistic regression, then the covariates of two groups were matched using the 1∶1 nearest neighbor matching, and were checked using balance diagnostics and common support assumption. The influence of ACEs on the depression in those with ACEs was quantified by the average treatment effect on the treated.ResultsOf the 7 035 respondents, 6 529 (92.81%) had experienced ACEs, 1 802 (25.61%) had experienced at least four ACEs, and 1 003 (14.26%) had a depressive state. Multivariate Logistic regression model demonstrated that age, gender, and self-rated health status were significantly associated with ACEs (P<0.05) . Individual characteristics of both groups after propensity score matching were comparable (P>0.05) , and went through the check of balance diagnostics and common support assumption. Propensity score matching-based analysis revealed that the risk of depression prevalence in those with ACEs was increased by a factor of 6.9% compared with those without (P<0.001) .ConclusionThe prevalence of ACEs among middle-aged and elderly Chinese people was higher, which may significantly increase the risk of depression prevalence. Therefore, it is urgently needed to establish a system of ACEs screening and intervening to improve the level of healthcare services and well-being for these people

Graphene-Based Spatial Light Modulator Using Metal Hot Spots

    No full text
Here, we report a graphene-based electric field enhancement structure achieved by several adjacent metal nanoribbons which form the hot spots of the electric field and thus promote the absorption of the single layered graphene below the hot spots. Based on the tunability of the graphene’s Fermi level, the absorption rate can be modulated from near 100% to 35% under low electrostatic gating, leading to a 20 dB modulation depth of reflectance. Compared with the existing near infrared spatial light modulators such as optical cavities integrated with graphene and other structures utilizing patterned or highly doped graphene, our design has the advantages of strong optical field enhancement, low power dissipation and high modulation depth. The proposed electro-optic modulator has a promising potential for developing optical communication and exploiting big data interaction systems

Discharge Coefficient of Rectangular Short-Crested Weir with Varying Slope Coefficients

Rectangular short-crested weirs are widely used for simple structure and high discharge capacity. As one of the most important and influential factors of discharge capacity, side slope can improve the hydraulic characteristics of weirs at special conditions. In order to systemically study the effects of upstream and downstream slope coefficients S1 and S2 on overflow discharge coefficient in a rectangular short-crested weir the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method and the Renormalization Group (RNG) κ-ε turbulence model are used. In this study, the slope coefficient ranges from V to 3H:1V and each model corresponds to five total energy heads of H0 ranging from 8.0 to 24.0 cm. Comparisons of discharge coefficients and free surface profiles between simulated and laboratory results display a good agreement. The simulated results show that the difference of discharge coefficients will decrease with upstream slopes and increase with downstream slopes as H0 increases. For a given H0, the discharge coefficient has a convex parabolic relation with S1 and a piecewise linearity relation with S2. The maximum discharge coefficient is always obtained at S2 = 0.8. There exists a difference between upstream and downstream slope coefficients in the influence range of free surface curvatures. Furthermore, a proposed discharge coefficient equation by nonlinear regression is a function of upstream and downstream slope coefficients

Dual-Mechanism Absorptive Metasurface with Wideband 20 dB RCS Reduction

    No full text
This paper presents a dual-mechanism method to design a single-layer absorptive metasurface with wideband 20 dB RCS reduction by simultaneously combining the absorption and phase cancellation mechanisms. The metasurface comprises two kinds of absorbing unit cells with 10 dB absorption performance but different reflection phases. The impedance condition for 20 dB RCS reduction is theoretically analyzed considering both the absorption and the phase cancellation based on the two unit cells, and the relationship between the surface impedance and the reflection phase/amplitude is revealed. According to these analyses, two unit cells with absorption performance and different reflection phases are designed and utilized to realize the absorptive metasurface. Numerical and experimental results show that the single-layer absorptive metasurface features wideband 20 dB RCS within 11.5–16 GHz with a thickness of only 3 mm

Quaternary ammonium salt polymers, a kind of polyelectrolyte with a quaternary ammonium group, are widely used in traditional and emerging industries due to their good water-solubility, adjustable cationicity and molecular weight, high efficiency and nontoxicity. In this paper, firstly, the properties and several synthesis methods of typical quaternary ammonium salt monomers were introduced. Secondly, the research progress on the synthesis of polymers was summarized from the perspective of obtaining products with high molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution and high monomer conversion, and special functional polymers. Thirdly, the relationships between the structures and properties of the polymer were analyzed from the perspectives of molecular weight, charge density, structural stability, and microstructural regulation of the polymer chain unit. Fourthly, typical examples of quaternary ammonium salt polymers in the application fields of water treatment, daily chemicals, petroleum exploitation, papermaking, and textile printing and dyeing were listed. Finally, constructive suggestions were put forward on developing quaternary ammonium salt polymers with high molecular weights, strengthening the research on the relationships between the structures and their properties and pinpointing relevant application fields

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), being highly virulent and contagious in piglets, has caused significant damage to the pork industries of many countries worldwide. There are no commercial drugs targeting coronaviruses (CoVs), and few studies on anti-PEDV inhibitors. The coronavirus 3C-like protease (3CLpro) has a conserved structure and catalytic mechanism and plays a key role during viral polyprotein processing, thus serving as an appealing antiviral drug target. Here, we report the anti-PEDV effect of the broad-spectrum inhibitor GC376 (targeting 3Cpro or 3CLpro of viruses in the picornavirus-like supercluster). GC376 was highly effective against the PEDV 3CLpro and exerted similar inhibitory effects on two PEDV strains. Furthermore, the structure of the PEDV 3CLpro in complex with GC376 was determined at 1.65 Ã…. We elucidated structural details and analyzed the differences between GC376 binding with the PEDV 3CLpro and GC376 binding with the transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) 3CLpro. Finally, we explored the substrate specificity of PEDV 3CLpro at the P2 site and analyzed the effects of Leu group modification in GC376 on inhibiting PEDV infection. This study helps us to understand better the PEDV 3CLpro substrate specificity, providing information on the optimization of GC376 for development as an antiviral therapeutic against coronaviruses

© 2017. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved. The timing of the establishment of the Yangtze River, whether prior to the early Miocene (~24 Ma) or more recently (~2 Ma), has been a point of much debate. Here we applied detrital zircon U-Pb dating to Miocene sedimentary rocks from Taiwan and to estuary sands from modern rivers in SE China to trace sediment provenance and to further constrain the evolution of the Yangtze River. Detrital zircon U-Pb ages from Miocene sandstones of the Western Foothills show similar age spectra to Miocene and modern sediments in the Yangtze River drainage and some similarity to the Minjiang River sediments. However, they differ significantly from ages in some sandstones from the Hengchun Peninsula accretionary prism and from the estuary sands of the Jiulongjiang River. This information, together with petrographic and sedimentary facies analysis, argues that the Jiulongjiang and Minjiang Rivers were major sources to some Hengchun Peninsula turbidites (~12 Ma), while synchronous sedimentation in the Western Foothills was supplied from the Yangtze, Minjiang (or similar river), and possibly even the Yellow River. These sediments were transported southward/eastward via rivers or channels to the marginal sedimentary basins now inverted in the Western Foothills in Taiwan. The Yangtze River must have been established prior to the middle Miocene
