    Holographic Dark Energy Characterized by the Total Comoving Horizon and Insights to Cosmological Constant and Coincidence Problem

    The observed acceleration of the present universe is shown to be well explained by the holographic dark energy characterized by the total comoving horizon of the universe (η\etaHDE). It is of interest to notice that the very large primordial part of the comoving horizon generated by the inflation of early universe makes the η\etaHDE behave like a cosmological constant. As a consequence, both the fine-tuning problem and the coincidence problem can reasonably be understood with the inflationary universe and holographical principle. We present a systematic analysis and obtain a consistent cosmological constraint on the η\etaHDE model based on the recent cosmological observations. It is found that the η\etaHDE model gives the best-fit result Ωm0=0.270\Omega_{m0}=0.270 (Ωde0=0.730\Omega_{de0}=0.730) and the minimal χmin2=542.915\chi^2_{min}=542.915 which is compatible with χΛCDM2=542.919\chi^2_{\Lambda {\rm CDM}}=542.919 for the Λ\LambdaCDM model.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, two eqs.     Technological innovations at the onset of the Mid-Pleistocene Climate Transition in high-latitude East Asia

    The interplay between Pleistocene climatic variability and hominin adaptations to diverse terrestrial ecosystems is a key topic in human evolutionary studies. Early and Middle Pleistocene environmental change and its relation to hominin behavioural responses has been a subject of great interest in Africa and Europe, though little information is available for other key regions of the Old World, particularly from Eastern Asia. Here we examine key Early Pleistocene sites of the Nihewan Basin, in high-latitude northern China, dating between ∼1.4 to 1.0 million years ago (Ma). We compare stone tool assemblages from three Early Pleistocene sites in the Nihewan Basin, including detailed assessment of stone tool refitting sequences at the ∼1.1 Ma-old site of Cenjiawan. Increased toolmaking skills and technological innovations are evident in the Nihewan Basin at the onset of the Mid-Pleistocene Climate Transition (MPT). Examination of the lithic technology of the Nihewan sites, together with an assessment of other key Palaeolithic sites of China, indicates that toolkits show increasing diversity at the outset of the MPT and in its aftermath. The overall evidence indicates the adaptive flexibility of early hominins to ecosystem changes since the MPT, though regional abandonments are also apparent in high-latitudes, likely owing to cold and oscillating environmental conditions.     Zero-gravity growth of NaF-NaCl eutectics in the NASA Skylab program

    Continuous and discontinuous NaF fibers, embedded in a NaCl matrix, were produced in space and on earth. The production of continuous fibers in a eutectic mixture is attributed to the absence of convection current in the liquid during solidification in space. Image transmission and optical transmittance measurements of transverse sections of the space-grown and earth-grown ingots were made with a light microscope and a spectrometer. It is shown that better optical properties were obtained from samples grown in space. This was attributed to a better alignment of NaF fibers along the ingot axis. A new concept is advanced to explain the phenomenon of transmittance versus far infrared wavelength of the directionally solidified NaCl-NaF eutectic in terms of the two-dimensional Bragg Scattering and the polarization effect of Rayleigh scattering. This concept can be applied to other eutectic systems as long as the index of refraction of the matrix over a range of wavelengths is known.     Protein design in a lattice model of hydrophobic and polar amino acids

    A general strategy is described for finding which amino acid sequences have native states in a desired conformation (inverse design). The approach is used to design sequences of 48 hydrophobic and polar aminoacids on three-dimensional lattice structures. Previous studies employing a sequence-space Monte-Carlo technique resulted in the successful design of one sequence in ten attempts. The present work also entails the exploration of conformations that compete significantly with the target structure for being its ground state.     Self-consistent tilted-axis-cranking study of triaxial strongly deformed bands in 158^{158}Er at ultrahigh spin

    Stimulated by recent experimental discoveries, triaxial strongly deformed (TSD) states in 158^{158}Er at ultrahigh spins have been studied by means of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model and the tilted-axis-cranking method. Restricting the rotational axis to one of the principal axes -- as done in previous cranking calculations -- two well-defined TSD minima in the total Routhian surface are found for a given configuration: one with positive and another with negative triaxial deformation γ\gamma. By allowing the rotational axis to change direction, the higher-energy minimum is shown to be a saddle point. This resolves the long-standing question of the physical interpretation of the two triaxial minima at a very similar quadrupole shape obtained in the principal axis cranking approach. Several TSD configurations have been predicted, including a highly deformed band expected to cross lesser elongated TSD bands at the highest spins. Its transitional quadrupole moment Qt10.5Q_t \approx 10.5\,eb is close to the measured value of \sim11\,eb; hence, it is a candidate for the structure observed in experiment.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Clinical study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Aesculap Activ-L™ artificial disc in the treatment of degenerative disc disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this clinical study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Activ-L Artificial Disc for treatment of single-level degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine in patients who have been unresponsive to at least six months of prior conservative care. The hypothesis of the study is that the Activ-L Disc is non-inferior to the control (the Charité<sup>® </sup>Artificial Disc [DePuy Spine] or ProDisc-L<sup>® </sup>Total Disc Replacement [Synthes Spine]) with respect to the rate of individual subject success at 24 months. Individual subject success is a composite of effectiveness and safety.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The study proposed is a prospective, randomized, single-masked, controlled, multi-center clinical trial consisting of an estimated 414 subjects with single-level DDD of the lumbar spine (L4/L5, or L5/S1) who have failed to improve with conservative treatment for at least six months prior to enrollment. After enrollment, subjects will be randomized in a 2:1 ratio to either the Activ-L Disc (investigational device) or the control (Charité or ProDisc-L). Radiographic endpoints will be evaluated by an independent reviewer at an imaging core laboratory. Each subject will be followed for 5 years post-treatment.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The safety and effectiveness of the Activ-L Artificial Disc for treatment of single-level degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine will be equivalent to Charité<sup>® </sup>Artificial Disc [DePuy Spine] or ProDisc-L<sup>® </sup>Total Disc Replacement [Synthes Spine] at 24 months.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>Current Controlled Trials NCT00589797.</p

    Design of Amplify and Forward MIMO Relay Networks with QoS Constraint

    In this paper, we design the optimal precoding matrices for amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multipleoutput(MIMO) relay networks. Specifically, we consider a dualhop relay network and minimize the total power consumed bysource and relay under predetermined quality of service (QoS) constraints, i.e., mean square error (MSE) constraints. By using majorization theory, we simplify the matrix-valued problem into a scalar-valued one. Since the problem is non-convex, we then propose two convex suboptimal problems that provide the upper and lower bound of the original objectives. Numerical results demonstrate that the lower bound and the upper bound are tight in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)

For a lattice model, we show that this new approach produces sequences that are likely to fold into desired structures.     Probing Topcolor-Assisted Technicolor from Like-sign Top Pair Production at LHC

    The topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) theory predicts tree-level flavor-changing neutral-current (FCNC) top quark Yukawa couplings with top-pions. Such FCNC interactions will induce like-sign top quark pair productions at CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While these rare productions are far below the observable level in the Standard Model and other popular new physics models such as the Minimal Supersymmetric Model, we find that in a sound part of parameter space the TC2 model can enhance the production cross sections to several tens of fb and thus may be observable at the LHC due to rather low backgrounds. Searching for these productions at the LHC will serve as an excellent probe for the TC2 model.Comment: 10 pages, 6 fig
