    Atmospheric Backscatter Model Development for CO Sub 2 Wavelengths

    The results of investigations into the problems of modeling atmospheric backscatter from aerosols, in the lowest 20 km of the atmosphere, at CO2 wavelengths are presented, along with a summary of the relevant aerosol characteristics and their variability, and a discussion of the measurement techniques and errors involved. The different methods of calculating the aerosol backscattering function, both from measured aerosol characteristics and from optical measurements made at other wavelengths, are discussed in detail, and limits are placed on the accuracy of these methods. The effects of changing atmospheric humidity and temperature on the backscatter are analyzed and related to the actual atmosphere. Finally, the results of modeling CO2 backscatter in the atmosphere are presented and the variation with height and geographic location discussed, and limits placed on the magnitude of the backscattering function. Conclusions regarding modeling techniques and modeled atmospheric backscatter values are presented in tabular form

    Experimental study of cluster formation in binary mixture of H2O and H2SO4 vapors in the presence of an ionizing radiation source

    Molecular clusters formed in pure nitrogen containing H2O and H2SO4 vapors and exposed to a 3 mCi Ni63 beta source were studied in the mass range 50 to 780 amu using a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Measurements were made under several combinations of relative humidity and relative acidity ranging from 0.7 to 7.5 percent and 0.00047 to 0.06333 percent, respectively. The number of H2SO4 molecules in the clusters observed ranged from 1 to 7 whereas the number of H2O molecules ranged from 1 to 16. The experimental cluster spectra differ considerably from those calculated using the classical nucleation theory. First order calculations using modified surface tension values and including the effects of multipole moments of the nucleating molecules indicate that these effects may be enough to explain the difference between the measured and the calculated spectra

    SAGE measurements of the stratospheric aerosol dispersion and loading from the Soufriere Volcano

    Explosions of the Soufriere volcano on the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent reduced two major stratospheric plumes which the stratospheric aerosol and gas experiment (SAGE) satellite tracked to West Africa and the North Atlantic Ocean. The total mass of the stratospheric ejecta measured is less than 0.5% of the global stratospheric aerosol burden. No significant temperature or climate perturbation is expected. It is found that the movement and dispersion of the plumes agree with those deduced from high altitude meteorological data and dispersion theory.     Production and decay of the neutral top-pion in high energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} colliders

    We study the production and decay of the neutral top-pion πt0\pi_{t}^{0} predicted by topcolor-assisted technicolor(TC2) theory. Our results show that, except the dominant decay modes bbˉb\bar{b}, tˉc\bar{t}c and gggg, the πt0\pi_{t}^{0} can also decay into γγ\gamma\gamma and ZγZ \gamma modes. It can be significantly produced at high energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collider(LC) experiments via the processes e+e−→πt0γe^{+}e^{-}\to \pi_{t}^{0}\gamma and e+e−→Zπt0e^{+}e^{-}\to Z\pi_{t}^{0}. We further calculate the production cross sections of the processes e+e−→γπt0→γtˉce^{+}e^{-}\to\gamma\pi_{t}^{0}\to\gamma\bar{t}c and e+e−→Zπt0→Ztˉce^{+}e^{-}\to Z\pi_{t}^{0}\to Z\bar{t}c. We find that the signatures of the neutral top-pion πt0\pi_{t}^{0} can be detected via these processes.Comment: Latex file, 13 Pages, 6 eps figures. to be published in Phys.Rev.

    Calculation of composition distribution of ultrafine ion-H2O-H2SO4 clusters using a modified binary ion nucleation theory

    Thomson's ion nucleation theory was modified to include the effects of curvature dependence of the microscopic surface tension of field dependent, nonlinear, dielectric properties of the liquid; and of sulfuric acid hydrate formation in binary mixtures of water and sulfuric acid vapors. The modified theory leads to a broadening of the ion cluster spectrum, and shifts it towards larger numbers of H2O and H2SO4 molecules. Whether there is more shifting towards larger numbers of H2O or H2SO4 molecules depends on the relative humidity and relative acidity of the mixture. Usually, a broadening of the spectrum is accompanied by a lowering of the mean cluster intensity. For fixed values of relative humidity and relative acidity, a similar broadening pattern is observed when the temperature is lowered. These features of the modified theory illustrate that a trace of sulfuric acid can facilitate the formation of ultrafine, stable, prenucleation ion clusters as well as the growth of the prenucleation ion clusters towards the critical saddle point conditions, even with low values of relative humidity and relative acidity

    Probing neutral top-pion via a flavor-changing process γγ→tcˉΠt0\gamma\gamma\to t\bar{c}\Pi_{t}^{0}

    In the framework of topcolor-assisted-technicolor model(TC2), we study a flavor-changing neutral top-pion production process γγ→tcˉΠt0\gamma\gamma\to t\bar{c}\Pi_{t}^{0}. The study shows that there exists a resonance effect which can enhance the cross section up to a few fb even tens fb. For a yearly luminosity 100 fb−1fb^{-1} at future linear colliders, there might be hundreds even thousands events to be produced. On the other hand, the background of such flavor-changing process is very clean due to the GIM mechanism in SM . With such sufficient events and clean background, neutral toppion could be detected at future linear colliders with high center of energy and luminosity.     Poling effect on distribution of quenched random fields in a uniaxial relaxor ferroelectric

    The frequency dependence of the dielectric permitivity's maximum has been studied for poled and unpoled doped relaxor strontium barium niobate Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6:Cr3+Sr_{0.61}Ba_{0.39}Nb_{2}O_{6}:Cr^{3+} (SBN-61:Cr). In both cases the maximum found is broad and the frequency dispersion is strong. The present view of random fields compensation in the unpoled sample is not suitable for explaining this experimental result. We propose a new mechanism where the dispersion of quenched random electric fields, affecting the nanodomains, is minimized after poling. We test our proposal by numerical simulations on a random field Ising model. Results obtained are in agreement with the polarization's measurements presented by Granzow et al. [Phys. Rev.     Multiscale Technicolor and the Zbb-bar Vertex

    We estimate the correction to the Zbb-bar vertex arising from the exchanges of the sideways extended technicolor (ETC) boson and the flavor-diagonal ETC boson in the multiscale walking technicolor model. The obtained result is too large to explain the present data. However, if we introduce a new self- interaction for the top quark to induce the top quark condensate serving as the origin of the large top quark mass, the corrected R_b=Gamma_b/Gamma_h can be consistent with the recent LEP data. The corresponding correction to R_c=Gamma_c/Gamma_h is shown to be negligibly small.Comment: 9-page LaTex fil

    Top quark associated production of the neutral top-pion at high energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} colliders

    In the context of topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) models, we calculate the associated production of the neutral top-pion πt0\pi_{t}^{0} with a pair of top quarks via the process e+e−⟶ttˉπt0e^{+}e^{-}\longrightarrow t\bar{t}\pi_{t}^{0}. We find that the production cross section is larger than that of the process e+e−⟶ttˉH e^{+}e^{-}\longrightarrow t\bar{t}H both in the standard model (SM) and in the minimal supersymmetric SM. With reasonable values of the parameters in TC2 models, the cross section can reach 20fb20fb. The neutral top-pion πt0\pi_{t}^{0} may be direct observed via this process.Comment: Latex files, 10 pages and 3 figure
