Purpose: To study changes in the expressions of E-selectin, adiponectin (APN) and serum ferritin in patients with diabetes retinopathy (DN) and their correlations with DN.Methods: Diabetes patients (180) in Tangshan City Workers Hospital Group Rehabilitation Hospital from February 2014 to February 2015 were recruited and divided into three groups: 56 non-diabetic retinopathy (NDR) cases, 60 non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) cases and 64 proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) cases. Serum levels of E-selectin, adiponectin (APN), ferritin (SF), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and fasting insulin (FINS) were separately assayed, and their correlations analyzed. Results: There were no significant differences between patients in the three groups with respect to sex, age, blood pressure and blood lipids (p > 0.05). Serum E-selectin, APN and SF levels gradually and significantly increased in the order: NDR group ˂ NPDR group ˂ PDR group (p < 0.05).Conclusion: E-selectin, APN and SF levels of patients with DN increase with aggravation of the disease. The decrease in E-selectin, APN and SF levels may have a positive effect on the improvement of the status of DN patients. Keywords: Diabetic retinopathy, E-selectin, Adiponectin, Serum ferriti

The Physical Environment for Play Therapy with Chinese Children

    Get PDF
The growing interest in addressing the mental health needs of Chinese children through play therapy calls for an understanding of the cultural roots and norms of Chinese families. To help professionals succeed in this traditionally Western treatmen when providing cross-cultural play therapy, the authors make recommendations concerning the location and appearance of the play therapy facility, including its waiting room and playroom. They discuss the need for carefully introducing play therapy to Chinese parents and suggest Western and Chinese toys and play items that are therapeutically appropriate for Chinese children. The authors also propose an outdoor play area based on the therapeutic rationales of contemporary neuropsychology. With this culturally sensitive discussion, the authors seek more effective play therapy not only for the children living in Chinese societies—mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan—but also in countries with major Chinese child populations

Improved Fine-Tuning by Better Leveraging Pre-Training Data

As a dominant paradigm, fine-tuning a pre-trained model on the target data is widely used in many deep learning applications, especially for small data sets. However, recent studies have empirically shown that training from scratch has the final performance that is no worse than this pre-training strategy once the number of training samples is increased in some vision tasks. In this work, we revisit this phenomenon from the perspective of generalization analysis by using excess risk bound which is popular in learning theory. The result reveals that the excess risk bound may have a weak dependency on the pre-trained model. The observation inspires us to leverage pre-training data for fine-tuning, since this data is also available for fine-tuning. The generalization result of using pre-training data shows that the excess risk bound on a target task can be improved when the appropriate pre-training data is included in fine-tuning. With the theoretical motivation, we propose a novel selection strategy to select a subset from pre-training data to help improve the generalization on the target task. Extensive experimental results for image classification tasks on 8 benchmark data sets verify the effectiveness of the proposed data selection based fine-tuning pipeline

SAPPHIRE: Search for exotic parity-violation interactions with quantum spin amplifiers

Quantum sensing provides sensitive tabletop tools to search for exotic spin-dependent interactions beyond the Standard Model, which has attracted great attention in theories and experiments. Here we develop a technique based on quantum Spin Amplifier for Particle PHysIcs REsearch (SAPPHIRE) to resonantly search for exotic interactions, specifically parity-odd spin-spin interactions. The present technique effectively amplifies the pseudomagnetic field generated by exotic interactions by a factor of about 200 while being insensitive to spurious external magnetic fields. Our studies, using such a quantum amplification technique, open the doors to exploring the parity-violation interactions mediated by Z' bosons in the challenging parameter space (force range between 3 mm and 0.1 km) and set the most stringent constraints on Z'-mediated electron-neutron couplings, significantly improving previous limits by up to five orders of magnitude. Moreover, our bounds on Z'-mediated couplings between nucleons reaches into a hitherto unexplored parameter space (force range below 1 m), complementing the existing astrophysical and laboratory studies.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

mPLUG-Owl: Modularization Empowers Large Language Models with Multimodality

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive zero-shot abilities on a variety of open-ended tasks, while recent research has also explored the use of LLMs for multi-modal generation. In this study, we introduce mPLUG-Owl, a novel training paradigm that equips LLMs with multi-modal abilities through modularized learning of foundation LLM, a visual knowledge module, and a visual abstractor module. This approach can support multiple modalities and facilitate diverse unimodal and multimodal abilities through modality collaboration. The training paradigm of mPLUG-Owl involves a two-stage method for aligning image and text, which learns visual knowledge with the assistance of LLM while maintaining and even improving the generation abilities of LLM. In the first stage, the visual knowledge module and abstractor module are trained with a frozen LLM module to align the image and text. In the second stage, language-only and multi-modal supervised datasets are used to jointly fine-tune a low-rank adaption (LoRA) module on LLM and the abstractor module by freezing the visual knowledge module. We carefully build a visually-related instruction evaluation set OwlEval. Experimental results show that our model outperforms existing multi-modal models, demonstrating mPLUG-Owl's impressive instruction and visual understanding ability, multi-turn conversation ability, and knowledge reasoning ability. Besides, we observe some unexpected and exciting abilities such as multi-image correlation and scene text understanding, which makes it possible to leverage it for harder real scenarios, such as vision-only document comprehension. Our code, pre-trained model, instruction-tuned models, and evaluation set are available at https://github.com/X-PLUG/mPLUG-Owl. Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

Jdp2 downregulates Trp53 transcription to promote leukaemogenesis in the context of Trp53 heterozygosity

We performed a genetic screen in mice to identify candidate genes that are associated with leukaemogenesis in the context of Trp53 heterozygosity. To do this we generated Trp53 heterozygous mice carrying the T2/Onc transposon and SB11 transposase alleles to allow transposon-mediated insertional mutagenesis to occur. From the resulting leukaemias/lymphomas that developed in these mice, we identified nine loci that are potentially associated with tumour formation in the context of Trp53 heterozygosity, including AB041803 and the Jun dimerization protein 2 (Jdp2). We show that Jdp2 transcriptionally regulates the Trp53 promoter, via an atypical AP-1 site, and that Jdp2 expression negatively regulates Trp53 expression levels. This study is the first to identify a genetic mechanism for tumour formation in the context of Trp53 heterozygosity
